The Cardiff Kook has gained some notoriety in the area since the surfing statue was first installed in Cardiff 10 years ago. The notoriety comes from the fact that it is often decorated to fit with the current holiday or in other ways – a treat for many, but something that often irritates others, including those who don’t like the statue to begin with! Coming from New England after many years, it took some time to get accustomed to different types of holiday decorating out here, and flowers blooming over the holidays instead of snow and ice. But we quickly adapted, and I continue to enjoy seeing different kinds of decorations inside and out for the holiday season here n Southern California.

Yesterday was the first day of winter, the longest night and shortest day of the year. Now to start watching the days grow longer!
Winter was ushered in by a decent amount of rain (lots of smiles about that) and slightly warmer temperatures, but the signs of winter have been around for a number of weeks.
Here in Carlsbad we see all the preparations for the holidays, with a multitude of decorations, just like elsewhere around the country, including decorated palm trees and an occasional cactus.
