humor: Picking a Listing Agent is Easy - Use Your Dog! - 06/02/09 09:21 AM
Much has been written about what to look for in your real estate agent to help sell your home. Agents spend many hours developing their listing presentations, creating marketing strategies, and learning about the housing market, all in preparation to demonstrate why they are the best choice for the seller.
Forget about all that. Just use your dog.
Seems one of the most expensive houses on the market in the US, for a reported $150 million, is represented by someone who passed muster with the family dog, according to homeowner Candy Spelling (widow of media magnate Aaron Spelling). Yes, the dog was reportedly used to … (60 comments)

humor: Real Estate Gone to the Birds in Carlsbad - 05/22/09 03:15 PM
We have had a number of recent posts about bird activity at our homes. If you missed them, I hope you will stop by to read. They will add some levity and humor to your life but also show the caring side of those who are dealing with bird families in their yards this Spring

humor: Friday Humor - New Words in My California Vocabulary - 05/15/09 05:14 AM
I have some new words in my vocabulary since moving from Boston to SoCal's Carlsbad.
No, it's not what you're thinkin - they're not swear words. I already know all of them and still use them actively, especially when I get the dreaded proxy error or I lose Internet access in the midst of writing a lengthy email. Word autosaves so at least I don't lose my precious post drafts.
FREEWAY - now back East this is a highway. Still is in my mind...a big road with lots of cars subject to massive tie ups, delays and road rage. But you … (6 comments)

humor: Wag More, Bark Less - 05/13/09 11:40 AM
I was on my way home from my chiropractor appointment and was at the light behind a van advertising a variety of services for dogs - I think the company was Pets in Paradise Resort. In any case, what really caught my attention was the bumper sticker:
Wag More, Bark Less

Obviously catering to the canine clientele, I thought it rather a timely reminder to all of us, whether in the real estate business or not, and in both our personal and business lives.
There is lots of bad behavior around - rudeness, nasty remarks, customer service that sucks, folks … (65 comments)

humor: Run Rabbit Run - Humor in My Backyard - 05/02/09 12:59 PM
I have a funny backyard. At least at times. It appears to be that time of year, again, and the rabbits are very active. Things have been heating up recently, so to speak, so fortunately I had my Flip vido camera nearby. The duck, who was dining at the bird feeder on the ground took it for a while then said "I'm outi." Good for a laugh, and it keeps the cats occupied.

humor: HAPPY EASTER from the Left Coast - 04/11/09 02:47 PM

HAPPY EASTER wishes to you and your family.
Our Mini Rabbit in our yard  (the smallest of the rabbit clan that considers our back yard their home) is about the size of the typical choco rabbit in the Easter Basket. Wouldn't he look cool in foil? Just kidding.
We have ducks too but they didn't show up today. Ducks and bunnies always remind me of Easter as a kid. Guess some things you don't outgrow.

humor: We're Having a Liquidation Sale - 03/15/09 01:15 PM
What if the real estate business were to run sales like they do in retail?
Imagine the opportunities...how about a truck load sale?
A going out of business sale?
Going out of business - well, yes, there are many REO, short sales and pre-foreclosures that MUST be sold. Some folks HAVE lost their jobs or their businesses and must sell.
50% Off Sale - imagine the bargains! Pick your percentage, we see lots of them depending on the retailer. Some buyers approach offers with this attitude. Unfortunately sellers don't always cooperate. Coldwell Banker held a "sale" of sorts with … (13 comments)

humor: It's All the Internet's Fault - 01/17/09 02:16 AM
I didn't do it. Really. None of this was intended. It's all the Internet's fault. Life was reasonably simple until the Internet came along. Supposedly it makes life easier, or more efficient, and things happen more quickly, and all that stuff. I'm not so sure some days.

See if you agree. If not, that's fine.
The Internet has sucked away my personal and sleep time - 24 hours used to work but it's not enough any more.
The Internet has created a feeling of anonymity so folks feel they can do and say whatever they want - and they do. … (20 comments)

humor: A Long Time Ago and Far Far Away... - 12/28/08 12:20 PM
Sounds like the start of a great movie, doesn't it?
Sorry to disappoint, but it's only a bit of history here. Interesting, perhaps.
A package arrived in the mail a week ago from my Mom on the East coast...an assortment of Christmas gifts and a brown envelope with some old photos. Seems she had been cleaning out some boxes and going through a ton of photos and sent some along that she thought would be of interest.
I might even be inspired to share some, at least those that are of the non-embarrassing sort. More on that later.
What was of … (18 comments)

humor: Does This Home Come with a Money-Back Guarantee? - 12/15/08 03:49 PM
We have all had the experience, on multiple occasions no doubt, of buying a product that is defective. Major bummer. Crap. *&#$@. It's broken, not what we expected, not functioning, or just a piece of junk that we paid good money for. We're entitled to our money back, aren't we? We expect it, indeed we demand it!
So we stomp back to Returns, or Customer Service, or stick it in the box it came in and ship it back to the company with a request for our money back. Plus shipping in some cases. Or complain to some poor CRS on … (13 comments)

humor: Want to Dress up YOUR Photo for the Holidays? - 12/07/08 12:31 PM
A couple of years ago I learned about this site for "pimping our pics." I was fairly new to AR and seems to me the thank you for introducing me, and perhaps many AR folks, to this site goes to Maureen Francis. My memory may be faulty - it often is - but it's a nice thought anyhow.
I played with a few photos and dressed one to use for the holidays. I have now used it two years in a row. Maybe I should do something new...there are lots of options, but I was happy with the original so I … (18 comments)

humor: Extremes in the San Diego Real Estate Market - 09/29/08 05:03 PM
I thought it might be fun to look at some of the extremes in the San Diego real estate market. I often gasp at some of what I see but looking formally at the wide range of properties throughout our county is not something I normally do. I'm procrastinating.
There really is no point to this except to share how diverse our market is. So here goes.
Second Longest active listing - a beach cottage for $1.4 million was listed 9/8/2004 (priced at a whopping $1828/SF), ‘bout 1486 days. Boy, does that skew the DOM calculations in that community Longest active … (18 comments)

humor: Ghana Spammer Strikes Again - 09/09/08 04:05 AM
We've all been spammed zillions of times from folks around the world who want to give us money, usually millions! If only life were so simple.
You have to admire the inventiveness of some of these spammers.
The heart-wrenching stories the pleas for help getting the loved one and money out of the country the congratulations on winning the biggest sweepstakes in the world, and on and on. And messages from such important heads of state!! I feel so honored.
The subject headers are dead giveaways, and fortunately spam filters capture most of these charletans, along with emails about Viagra, enhancing … (8 comments)

humor: What's In a Name? A Street Name, That Is - 09/03/08 04:13 PM
Folks moving to the Carlsbad area, and Southern California in general, will certainly notice the Spanish influence on street names. And tract homes in subdivisions being what they are, street names tend to cluster along some sort of theme. It may be elusive, but nonetheless you will generally find some similarities.
Aviara, the resort residential community in south Carlsbad anchored by the Four Seasons Aviara Resort has a bird theme. No surprise. There's Black Swan, Grebe, Surfbird (generic), Tern, Black Rail, Kingfisher, Pelican, Shorebird (well, also a bit generic), Hummingbird, Spoonbill, Sparrow, Towhee, Merganser, Goldfinch, Avocet, Tanager, Sanderling, Blackbird and Whimbrel. … (24 comments)

humor: My Web 2.0 Vocabulary is Changing, or Is It Changing Me? - 08/12/08 07:21 PM
Intriguing thought, isn’t it?
We often hear new words that, over time, become commonplace in our daily lives. Some are made up, some are real entities or products, and some is jargon and slang. Some seem to emerge in the media or on TV.
Brangelina comes quickly to mind…not that I care, mind you, but you can’t avoid it, especially being here is La La Land as they call it. Who thinks up this stuff anyway? Cripes, there’s even a website for this nonsense. Get a life. Who really cares? Maybe TomKat does.
And there’s yada yada yada. Dude, is there … (31 comments)

humor: It's About Pie - Julian Pie - 03/18/08 04:27 PM
I like writing about pie. But I sure prefer eating it. And I will, in just a bit.
This post is about pie, Julian Pie, that is. Why?
Well, because I have one sitting on the counter, and it is possibly the best pie around, unless you make it yourself. Perhaps still better. Certainly much easier. You make your selection, plunk down some cash, and home you go with a box full of pie. Don’t forget the vanilla ice cream. What a deal.
The Julian Pie Company is a San Diego favorite and has been for over 20 years. Founded in the … (16 comments)

humor: A Little Friday Humor - Poking Fun at the Government - 02/29/08 02:52 AM
Here's a little fun for Leap Day Friday.
If you are sensitive to folks poking fun at the US government then read no further.
These were passed on to me and I do not know where they originated. Presumably they are true stories but even if they are not they sure make you chuckle. Enjoy.

humor: Only In California - 02/23/08 02:31 PM
I shouldn’t make an assumption, but this sign, for me at least, screams CALIFORNIA.
I mean, where else would you find something like this? We DO have a bit of a reputation, you know.
I have passed by this sign in San Marcos several times as I have been out showing property, and finally got around to taking a picture.
It’s not on one of the freeways, where you get 5-6 lanes of traffic screaming down the road in one direction at 80 mph.
Nor is it in an area where there are on-going traffic jams as you get in some … (21 comments)
