It's always interesting to come across something intriquing but unexpected, if you are paying attention, as was the case of spying this roof decoration on a house in Aguanga CA on the way through the mountains to the desert.
I'm not quite sure what kind of creature it was - somewhat dragon-like or perhaps a dinosaur - but it looked a bit menacing and perhaps was there to ward off evil spirits. I couldn't resist grabbing my camera, of course.
This house also had a small market and we had stopped to buy some fresh produce on our way to Palm (12 comments)
Dick Greenberg encouraged us to share our best photos, in one or both categories – real estate and real life – for his 2017 ActiveRain Photography Contest!
There are multiple sub-categories and plenty of points to be earned, too (this is a Real Life-Animals entry). Plus it’s a contest, so there will be winners and extra points. The contest will end on October 31 so don’t miss your opportunity to share your best photos.

One of the things we easily sell here in SoCal is the outdoor lifestyle. That should come as no surprise to anyone, given the beautiful weather we have most of the (21 comments)
I suppose I am to blame for getting my daughter interested in horses many years ago, seen here at about 1 year old. I did a lot of riding when I was a kid - I was actually heavy into the sport from about 9 until 17 - so I guess she came by it honestly.
Which meant we ended up with a horse for her and one for my other daughter when they were older and they rode for years before going off to college. This may be the last time I was actually on a (26 comments)
Hanapepe is a very cool, artsy town in the south central area of Kaua'i. It's a neat place to stop for lunch and to tour some wonderful art galleries and other shops, on the way to Waimea Canyon, or heading home.
The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge was built in 1911 and used by residents to cross the river. My understanding is it took quite a beating with Hurricane Iniki but underwent restoration. It really does move quite a bit when you walk on it and one can't help bouncing around a little bit...as long as no one else is nearby! (21 comments)
Dick Greenberg has inspired us to share our best photos in 2 categories, Real Estate and Real Life, with several sub-categories in each for the ActiveRain 2016 Photography Contest. You still have 6 more days to get your entry in - deadline is November 30.
This photo reminded me of Monet's waterlilies, some of his most impressive and famous paintings of his garden at Giverny, France. I thought the photo looked more like an impressionist painting than something taken with a camera. If you've even seen his paintings in real life you know how extraordinary they are.
While the day here started out with pretty gray weather - a reminder of June Gloom - the day is clearing up nicely, and no doubt the Carlsbad beaches will be mobbed with residents and visitors enjoy the Labor Day Holiday.
My prediction is for another beautiful sunset - there are many here - and no shortage of people on the beach, on the Carlsbad boardwalk, and parked along the bluffs enjoying the sunset as Labor Day draws to a close.
Wishing you a wonderful and safe Labor Day, however you decide to enjoy it!! (27 comments)
