Grateful for Vacation and Some Lessons Learned

I recently returned from a 10-day vacation to Kaua’i in Hawai’i – 10 days away from life in Carlsbad and day to day business issues. I’ve been fortunate to have taken plenty of vacations over the years – South America, Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, and in many states across the US and always appreciate having the time away.

I was looking at some of my Kaua’i photos and it got me thinking about how important vacations really are to our emotional and physical health. And while I think my thoughts about vacations have pretty much been … (29 comments)

kauai photos: Happy Hanalei Halloween - 10/27/23 01:25 PM
Happy Halloween in Hanalei, Kaua'i

We were visiting Hanalei in Kaua'i last week (just got home very early this morning) and spied this well-dressed skeleton in front of one of the collections of stores where our favorite Hanalei restaurant, Bar Acuda, is located.

The skeleton was a kid and photo magnet, with lots of parents snapping pics of kids standing in front of it and holding on to the legs. The skeleton had to be close to 12 feet tall although it might not appear that large in my photo.

Wordless Wednesday: Holey Grail Donuts in Kauai

Well, I don't know that they are the Holy Grail, but they sure were good!

We just spent a week on Kauai for my birthday. We had heard about this food truck in Hanalei from our neighbors who had visited recently. It sounded pretty good so of course we checked it out, even though I can't say I am a big donut fan!

Holey Grail Donuts (also in Honolulu) offers a wide array of flavors and the options change often. The donuts are made right there as you wait, created from taro, a healthy root vegetable grown … (26 comments)

Wordless Wednesday - A Unique Planter

I snapped this photo recently of a pretty cool old truck in the small art town of Hanapepe when visiting Kauai...rather a unique planter, don't you think? I love the colors and especially the rooster - if you've visited Kauai you know roosters and chickens are everywhere.

We were in the same town 4 years ago - here's the same truck (I believe).

Sometimes Nature is Colorful, Sometimes Not

I stumbled across this photo from Kauai, from a trip we took in 2017. Kauai is nicknamed the Garden Isle for good reason, a very lush, green and colorful place from the mountains to the valleys.

This photo was taken, as is, as the sun was setting from Kilauea Road. A rather different kind of sunset that my camera interpreted in its own way. Interesting trees, aren't they? They appear to be Cook Pine trees based on my research.

Throwback Thursday
Rainbow in Princeville, Kauai

Like many, we miss the opportunity to travel because of the pandemic...well, we COULD, but... and have recently been talking about our past trips to Kauai and Maui, and how nice it would be to just pack up and go. But it's nice to have lots of photos to remember those trips for now.

Rainbows are pretty common there, and always fun to see, especially when you are just sitting around relaxing by the pool overlooking the ocean, as we were here before dinner in Princeville, Kauai.

kauai photos: The Napali Coast on Kauai - ActiveRain 2017 Photography Contest - 10/26/17 07:22 AM
The Napali Coast

Dick Greenberg invited us to share personal photos in a number of categories for his 2017 Activerain Photography contest. This is my selection for the Real Life - Travels/Places category.

The Napali Coast on the garden island of Kaua'i is a stunning bit of coastline, seen here from the Kalalau Lookout. While I've been told the best views are by boat or by helicopter, my body doesn't take well to those modes of transportation so this was the best I could do.

The lookout was about a 2-hour all the way around the island from our condo in Princeville on … (17 comments)

Sitting in Paradise

I spied this chair a short distance from where we were sitting on the beach in Hanalei Kaua'i a few weeks ago and thought it was perfect.

And just think how many places you could use it, and feel that sitting there is the coolest spot in paradise!

Hanalei Pier Sunset

While not as dramatic as watching the sunset from the St. Regis in Princeville, a sunset over Hanalei Bay from the pier is pretty extaordinary. We enjoyed this view, on a Thursday ironically, 2 weeks ago just before heading to dinner at a favorite restaurant Bar Acuda in Hanalei, sitting at the Chef's Table by the kitchen.

Obviously lots of others had the same idea - the sunset, that is - and the beach was lined with people, cameras in hand to enjoy the last few minutes of sun and the changing sky over the water and the famous mountain, … (15 comments)

Hanalei Farmer's Market Flowers

A visit to the "garden isle" of Kaua'i is always treat. We've been back amost a week and it seems so long ago!

We visited the Hanalei Farmer's Market on a rainy cloudy morning to stock up on some fresh produce. I spied this collection of local flowers and had to snap a photo. They certainly brightened my morning!

A Visit to the Kilauea Lighthouse
Kilauea, Kaua’i

The 3rd time is the charm, they say, and on our 3rd visit to the Kilauea Lighthouse a couple of weeks ago we were finally able to get close, and to go inside. I’ve been fascinated with lighthouses for years, having spent so much time in New England, so it was quite a treat to take a 30 minute guided tour (15 people only) of this one, easily seen from our villa about 2 miles away across the ocean in Princeville.

The lighthouse is located in the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge several miles from the … (28 comments)

kauai photos: Throwback Thursday: Not a Black and White Photo - 09/04/17 03:42 PM
A Gray Day on Kaua'i

Our first trip to Kaua'i back in 2011 was during a rainy time. Thankfully, it didn't keep us from exploring quite a bit, and there were plenty of sunny periods.

I took this photo along the coast road north of Kapa'a on a rather gray day. It turned out looking like a black and white photo, which was actually kinda cool. Normally everything looks so green and lush and the water is a myriad of blues, and this was a strinking contrast.

Kaua'i Vacation Dreamin'

I always enjoy looking at all the photos after returning from vacation. But looking at them again in anticipation as we plan our trip to Kaua'i in September is pretty cool, too. Better in some ways.

The Napali Coast is a definite must-see again, seen here from the Kalalau Lookout area near Waimea Canyon. It's a bit of a drive from where we will be staying in Princeville on the North Short, but there is lots to see on the way. I've started a short list...but part of the fun is just exploring and seeing what you come upon.

kauai photos: Wordless Wednesday: Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road - 07/18/17 10:17 AM
Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

One might ponder this on a visit to Kauai, given the ever-present chickens, and noisy roosters seemingly everywhere. They seems to follow their own rules about where they go and what they do. I suspect some don't make it across the road or through the parking lots.

The bigger question - why are there so many and where did they come from?

I'm looking forward to our trip to Kauai, but not the chickens.

kauai photos: Throwback Thursday: Queen's Bath in Princeville, Kauai - 01/26/17 04:56 PM
Queen's Bath in Princeville, Kauai

On our last trip to Kauai, and hopefully soon to be repeated, we spent a fair amount of time exploring the island, both north and south shores, but still found plenty of time to just dump and unwind.

Near the end of our 8 days we explored the Queen's Bath in the Princeville area where we stayed on the North Shore. It was pretty cool, not crowded, and while not the easiest walk down the hill on a rather slippery path then over the lava rock to get to the Bath, it was great fun.

That said, I did some … (10 comments)

Cattle Egret on Kauai

On one of our recent trips to Kauai we stumbled upon a very pleasant, easy and beautiful hike through the 500-acre Wai Koa mahogany plantation in Kilauea, not far from where we were staying in Princeville on the north shore.

We spied this cattle egret sitting at the very top of a tree who didn't seem the least bothered by our presence. He, or she, was apparently surveying the kingdom in search of some tasty morsel.

A Visit to Kilauea Lighthouse in Kaua’i, Hawaii
We spent an amazing 5 days in Kaua’i for my birthday in early November – I am still enjoying looking at the photos.

Coming from New England, I am a big lighthouse fan. After all they are all over the place there, particularly in Maine and on Cape Cod.

Lighthouses are not so common here on the Left Coast, but we enjoyed a visit to Point Reyes north of San Francisco a couple of years ago to see that lighthouse (photo to the right).

It is amazing terrain with incredible views in all directions, and … (12 comments)
