Idyllwild is a small town in the San Jacinto mountains perhaps 2 hours from Carlsbad. It's rather small with lots of locally owned businesses, restaurants and galleries, as well as being a haven for hikers and rock climbers of all levels, from newbies to highly experienced, because of the mountains and numerous trails.
 
 
We spent a weekend there 9 years ago to explore this artsy town, do a little hiking, and simply relax. Suicide Rock (below) is a popular hike for those with moderate experience and stamina. Needless to say, we just enjoyed the views and the thought of climbing, rather than … (31 comments)
