A Fine Dining Experience at Caffé Pinguini in Playa Del Rey CA

We recently spent the night at a favorite inn in the LA area, the Inn at Playa del Rey, our 4th stay in as many years.

Of course a nice dinner was part of the plan and a little research yielded some pretty good recommendations  for  Caffé Pinguini (yes, there ARE 2 ffs in the spelling) right down the street close to the beach.

As a foodie, a great dining experience for me comes from the totality of the food, service, ambiance, and value (I’ve had what I consider great dining experiences … (16 comments)

restaurants: Brunch at the Commander’s Palace in New Orleans - 11/15/14 11:47 PM

Brunch at the Commander’s Palace in New Orleans

I attended the National Certified Residential Specialists (CRS) Convention in New Orleans from November 5th through the 8th in New Orleans, and in addition to attending some terrific meetings, and running one myself, the French Quarter beckoned several times.

But the crowning glory was brunch with some very close friends at the Commander’s Palace in the famed Garden District.

A quick trip on the trolley, a short walk from St. Charles, and one of the best restaurants in New Orleans (voted THE BEST 3 years running), and a … (17 comments)

Newest Trend for Dining in Carlsbad California – Curb Cafés

There’s a new dining trend in Carlsbad.

Curb Cafés.

In March the Carlsbad City Council approved a 3-year pilot program to try out curb cafés in downtown Carlsbad Village.

The first curb café is well under construction at Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant on State Street in the heart of the Village. The curb café will offer about 20 additional seats for the restaurant on a temporary deck structure that extends into the right of way (in this case several parking spaces).

Similar curb cafés have been … (10 comments)

restaurants: Homestead Restaurant in Oakland California on Piedmont Avenue - 09/28/13 12:36 PM
Homestead Restaurant in Oakland California on Piedmont Avenue I have a new fave restaurant on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland California.

The San Francisco area has a phenomenal dining scene, which I enjoy testing out whenever I am in town. Across the bay from this west coast dining capital, the Oakland area does itself proud as well in terms of a vibrant restaurant scene. My favorite, to date, is Encuentro at Jack London Square.
Homestead, on Piedmont Avenue, is my new fave.
Opening just recently, August 2013 in fact, Homestead is attracting a loyal following and getting reservations for a table … (6 comments)

It’s 38 Degrees….No, It’s Now 83 Degrees

Yes we have temperature swings here in Carlsbad California, although not as dramatic as other places. A good thing, in my opinion.

But I’m talking about the newest eatery to open in Carlsbad.

It started out as 38 Degrees. Supposedly the ideal temperature to serve beer at, and the place, while being transformed from the former Catch Sushi (originally a Blockbuster store) which apparently didn’t “catch on,” displayed signage that conveyed it was serving craft beer, American food and cocktails…a pretty good combo and perhaps more likely to be popular in … (10 comments)

Chandler’s Restaurant at the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort
The newly opened Chandler’s Restaurant at the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort is well worth your visit, whether you sit at the bar as I did the other night for dinner, or for table dining inside or out (with some ocean views) for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Bartenders Marc and Dan will take good care of you as they did us, and you are likely to strike-up a conversation in this convivial atmosphere at the bar with one of the locals or visitors from out of town who also … (1 comments)

Lunch at The Beachcomber Cafe at Crystal Cove in Newport Beach CA, and Another Wonderful Memory
The Beachcomber Cafe at Crystal Cove in Newport Beach California must be a place to making memories.

At least for me.

I had a 3-hour lunch at The Beachcomber Cafe at Crystal Cove on Monday with my cousin from Florida who I haven’t seen in over 15 years. We’ve been in touch, particular in the last 1 and a half years with my sister’s death and her father’s, but have lived some distance apart for years. Her business travels brought her to … (10 comments)

Café del Rey in Marina Del Rey California – Waterfront Dining with Excellent Views
I am a big foodie, as most people who know me can attest, and I really enjoy dining out when the opportunity presents itself.

And I enjoy sharing restaurants I’ve enjoyed that I think others might also appreciate.

Café del Rey in Marina del Rey California is another great find – waterfront dining with excellent views, and the food was tops!

Don’t Eat That Yet!! Famous Words from an ActiveRain Gathering in Annapolis MD
I was truly blessed last night.

I am on a whirlwind trip to Philadelphia, for family reasons, and to Washington, DC for the mid-year meetings for the Council of Residential Specialists (CRS) for 4 days. I had mentioned to Martha Brown, in Annapolis, some weeks ago about coming back east and she organized a group of AR friends for dinner last night at the Severn Inn in Annapolis on the Severn River with the Naval Academy as back-drop across the water.

Food to Go in Carlsbad – Gourmet Food Trucks are the Latest Foodie Trend
Gourmet food trucks are cropping up all over in Southern California, including Carlsbad.

Gourmet food trucks, featuring all sorts of fare, some of it from some of the best restaurants and chefs around, are becoming increasingly popular.

Food carts, and the infamous “roach coaches” one often sees at construction sites and elsewhere, have been around for years, but have recently become elevated to stellar gustatory heights.

Gourmet food trucks have been a staple of the LA food scene for some time and are … (36 comments)

Favorite Fish Markets in Carlsbad CA
One of my favorite foods, next to chocolate, is fish and seafood. I can’t get enough, whether it’s raw (sushi) or cooked. There are plenty of places here in Carlsbad and nearby to buy good seafood and fish, but I have a couple of favorite fish markets in Carlsbad, plus one in Cardiff that is worth mentioning.

FISH HOUSE VERA CRUZ

Fish House Vera Cruz is a family style seafood eatery in Carlsbad Village that is very popular with residents and vacationers alike. But they also have a fabulous fish market as … (6 comments)

The Sights of the Season are Everywhere in Carlsbad Village, Carlsbad CA Christmas is only 2 weeks away and the sights of the holiday season are everywhere in Carlsbad Village.
Retailers and restaurants are all decked out with the traditional signs of the holiday season all over Carlsbad Village. Wreathes, lights, garlands of greens, Santas, fully-decorated Christmas trees, and so much more add to the holiday charm of this quaint village by the sea.
It takes just a few minutes to step away from the craziness of daily life and pay attention to the signs of the approaching holiday … (10 comments)

Favorite Sweet Shops and Bakeries in the Carlsbad CA Area

Friends and family who know me are well aware of my penchant for sugary concoctions, especially if chocolate is involved. I’ve never met a chocolate I didn’t like, so far, although the better quality the chocolate the happier I am.
Chocolates, desserts, and baked goods go hand in hand, in my opinion, and knowing where to go to get them, when making something simply is not on the agenda or laziness sets it, or just because, is essential.
So, with that in mind, and to satisfy other sweet fanciers in … (12 comments)

La Quinta Restaurants – I found Another Favorite at The Homestead Restaurant in LA Quinta, CA

During a recent visit to the California desert a good friend treated us to brunch at a La Quinta restaurant she adores – The Homestead in the heart of town.

The Homestead oozes charm, from the beautiful patios and outdoor lounging and dining areas to the multiple rooms in a former “homestead,” bookshelves stocked with collectibles, and, well, the list goes on.

There are wonderful brunch selections, including the classic Eggs Benedict and a Vegetarian Fritatta (as you can see in the … (5 comments)

Fentons Creamery in Piedmont, Oakland California
I love a good ice cream place.

I even love a bad ice cream place – if there even is such a thing?

Somehow you can always tell a really good ice cream place – the line out the door is one good indicator. And of course locals can always tell you THE ice cream place to check out.

And offering creative flavors other than the typical vanilla and chocolate is, in my mind, the mark of a good ice cream place.

Carlsbad Restaurants – The Argyle Steakhouse in Aviara in South Carlsbad
The Argyle Steakhouse (or simply “The Argyle”) is a wonderful place to dine for breakfast (brunch on the weekend), lunch or dinner in the resort residential community of Aviara in South Carlsbad.

The Argyle is the restaurant at the Aviara Golf Course, part of the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, and offers really good food and great views of the golf course and the Batiquitos Lagoon.

While the Argyle is not for the budget conscious, you will definitely feel pampered when dining there, especially if you can … (9 comments)

Le Passage French Bistro in Carlsbad Village Le Passage French Bistro is a charming Carlsbad restaurant in the heart of downtown Carlsbad Village that will make you think you are dining in Paris.

A combination of great food, including a menu of French classics like duck and coq au vin, ambiance, a very good wine list, and charming décor make this a must dine type of place.  We had a fine dinner the other night with a good friend, enjoying the back patio on a most pleasant summer evening.
