Escondido, California is located about 14 miles inland from Carlsbad and adjacent to San Marcos, just west of the I-15 freeway running north and south, given Escondido easy access to San Diego and points north in Riverside County, including Temecula and its famed wine country.

The town of Del Mar ("of the sea" or "by the sea") is located about 15 miles north of San Diego along the coast north of La Jolla and south of Solana Beach. And, as they say, it's where the "turf meets the surf."
Apart from the charming village and expensive ocean-front and view properties, Del Mar is probably best known for the Del Mar Racetrack and Fair Grounds, which means the annual San Diego County Fair and the very popular thoroughbred horse races, popular for decades. More on that later.
Solana Beach is a coastal community about 17 miles north of San Diego, just south of Cardiff by the Sea, and bordered on the south by Del Mar, and to the east by Rancho Santa Fe.

Rancho Santa Fe (downtown, above photo), in San Diego's North County, is a bucolic and affluent residential community on rolling hills filled with Eucalyptus trees and orchards.
Years ago thousands of Eucalyptus trees were planted to be used for the railroad, but the wood turned out to not be appropriate. Thus the trees remain and add to the beauty of Rancho Santa Fe and the rolling countryside.
Located about 5 miles inland from the ocean (adjacent to and east of Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas) and perhaps 20 miles from San Diego, the Rancho Santa (7 comments)
San Marcos, in San Diego's North County, is located about 6 miles inland from the ocean, and about 30 miles from the downtown San Diego.
The community covers about 24 square miles and, as of the 2021 census, had about 95,000 residents. Census data also indicate a fairly diverse population.
San Marcos, because of its inland location, tends to offer a somewhat warmer climate than adjacent Carlsbad, although the west side of San Marcos gets some of the same coastal weather (marine layer, ocean breezes, cooler temperatures).

Cardiff (see slideshow at bottom of page) is a quaint and charming seaside village with a long surfing history, located about 20 miles north of San Diego, and sandwiched between Solana Beach (to the south) and Encinitas (to the north).
Cardiff has gorgeous views of the Pacific as well as the San Elijo Lagoon which forms the south border, and is a popular tourist and surfer destination.
Cardiff is a community of approximately 4550 housing units, both owner occupied and rentals, with over 11,500 (2007 census) residents, with about 56% of them owning their homes, and the rest renting.
