I confess I am not a big shopper. Oh, I go when needed – groceries, clothes, supplies – but I don’t spend a lot of time out shopping.

The Carlsbad Village Association, responsible for promoting many events and activities in our community, is sponsoring the 2nd annual Carlsbad Village Spring Shop Hop in downtown Carlsbad Village on Saturday April 21st from 3 to 7 pm.
What a great way to enjoy our wonderful Village, and likely beautiful Spring weather, and perhaps discover some new businesses and services you aren’t aware of.

The First Saturday following Thanksgiving has become a tradition for a number of years for supporting our small businesses – although we should do that all the time – and the opportunities will be plentiful from our Carlsbad Village merchants and service providers.

Spring is Here, and so is the Carlsbad Village Spring Shop Hop
Spring arrived right on time in Carlsbad. Indeed, we had wonderful weather and lots of flowers well before the official date.
The hours have been extended at the weekly Farmers Market in Carlsbad Village now that daylight savings time is in place, so you can shop until 7 pm.
And Carlsbad Village is hosting the first Spring Shop Hop downtown this coming Saturday, April 22.

La Costa will once again have a supermarket, other than the Vons at Alga Road and El Camino Real. Gelson’s is coming to town!
Albertsons was in La Costa next to the famed Omni La Costa Resort and Spa for years – we moved there in 2005 – and convenient for lots of area residents. Back in 2015 due to corporate restructuring and an acquisition, Albertsons disappeared and became Haggen. I stopped in at Clever Element, a new gallery in Carlsbad Village (since November 2015), yesterday and discovered a real treasure, two really…owner/creator Andreea Borcea and an awesome collection of creations by local artists, independent designers, and Fair-Trade artisans from around the world.
In your stroll by you might think Clever Element is just another Village shop with fashions, gift items, jewelry, and art. But you’d be sadly mistaken.

Carlsbad Controversial Open Space & Retail Proposal
Developing existing open space, whether for homes, retail, a hotel or resort, or some other commercial use is always controversial. The Agua Hedionda 85/15 Plan in Carlsbad east of the 5 freeway at Cannon Road, site of the Carlsbad Strawberry Company and adjacent to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, is certainly not lacking in controversy.
The plan, headed by developer Rick Caruso of Caruso Affiliated (builder of The Grove in Los Angeles, a well-known, upscale urban mall) and with a resident-driven initiative, has been in the works for several years.

Where is the Nearest Costco to Carlsbad?
I often get asked this question when people are relocating here to Carlsbad California, as I do about other popular stores like Trader’s Joe’s.
Homeowners in Carlsbad have 2 Costco Wholesale Warehouse options.
The Carlsbad Store is located off Palomar Airport Road just east of the 5 Freeway (and conveniently near the Flower Fields and the Carlsbad Premium Outlets Mall) at Armada Drive, at 951 Palomar Airport Road.

La Costa Town Square in La Costa, Carlsbad is Now Open
The controversial La Costa Town Square is now open in South Carlsbad, in the La Costa area.
The La Costa Town Square has been the center of attention, from a building perspective, for a number of years, with concerns about loss of open space, more traffic and congestions, and impact on the environment.
This ambitious development was ultimately approved by the City of Carlsbad, and construction started in December of 2013.

I’m Going Back to Cali, in Carlsbad CA
Back to Cali is a very cool shop in the Village Faire Shopping Center in the heart of Carlsbad Village, at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and the Coast Road/101/Carlsbad Boulevard.
I had a chance to visit today and spent some time talking with the very charming owner, David Addy, who reflects on his sentiment, and that of many others who have visited our area, of wanting to go back to Cali. Thus a dream became a reality.
