New Year’s Eve is just around the corner, and if you are a runner you may very likely be thinking about, or planning on, our famous Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon for 2018.

Probably not something those in many parts of the freezing cold US are considering, but this is a big event here!

The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon takes place in just 2 weeks, on Sunday January 14 here in Carlsbad California. And this marathon is a qualifying event for the famed Boston Marathon.

southern california relocation dude: Bake Sale at Sea Hive Marketplace to Benefit Victims of Lilac Fires - 12/23/17 12:50 PM
Bake Sale at Sea Hive Marketplace
to Benefit Those Affected by the Lilac Fires

Sea Hive Marketplace, one of my favorite stores around, is hosting a bake sale today with 10 area bakers participating, from 10 am until 4 pm. 100% of the proceeds will benefit those affected by the Lilac Fires recently. Stop by if you have a chance, at 1555 S. Coast Highway in Oceanside.

We started, of course, with the bake sale and bought a bunch of goodies to enjoy and share.

Of course we then went on to do some shopping at this eclectic marketplace with numerous vendors, and … (13 comments)

southern california relocation dude: Wordless Wednesday: Holiday Decorating in the Desert - 12/20/17 09:20 AM
Desert Decorating for the Holidays

Coming from New England after many years, it took some time to get accustomed to different types of holiday decorating out here, and flowers blooming over the holidays instead of snow and ice. But we quickly adapted, and I continue to enjoy seeing different kinds of decorations inside and out for the holiday season here n Southern California.

We were in Palm Desert and La Quinta several years back over New Year's Eve and I spied this cactus (one of several) in this yard.  A rather prickly decorating job no doubt, but I thought it was pretty cool, … (11 comments)

I love this recent addition to the public art displays, many of which are wall murals, in Carlsbad Village. It's located on the north wall of Royal Palms Spirits, facing the street at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and the Coast Highway/Carlsbad Boulevard. You can't miss it!

southern california relocation dude: I'm So Thankful for My Grandkids - Day 7 of Thankfulness - 11/18/17 05:16 PM
So Thankful for My Grandkids

We had our 4th grandchild less than 2 weeks ago (the photo is of the 1st one at 2 weeks of age). Indeed, I was sitting in the airport in Chicago waiting on a delayed plane when it all happened. It made me think about how special these youngsters are to me and my wife, and the relationships we have with our 2 daughters and their husbands who live in LA.

We are very thankful our immediate family is all relatively close, with both daughters living in Los Angeles less than 2 hours away (when you are lucky … (16 comments)

The 2017 Breeders Cup World Championshps
Del Mar Racetrack, Del Mar CA

For the first time ever, the Del Mar Racetrack will host the 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, one of the elite horse racing events taking place every year. You might think of it as the World Series of horse racing – an annual event since 1984 – featuring some of the world’s best thoroughbreds.

Preparations have been in place for months on anticipation of the Breeders’ Cup, horses are arriving, and the excitement is mounting for this famous event, taking place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds this Friday and Saturday, November … (11 comments)

southern california relocation dude: Bonding with Your New House – A Special Moment - 10/27/17 04:16 PM
You've Closed on Your New House
Now it's Time to Bond!

A special moment arrives for most buyers when you become the new owner. You might get a call from your agent that you are the new homeowner, or you might be sitting around the closing table signing documents when it finally happens. Depends on how things work in your area.

You’ve been anticipating this for a long time, with a wide range of emotions…not just weeks, but perhaps months, or longer.

But when it’s official you are the new owner, it’s a very special moment indeed. It might take a few minutes to get … (31 comments)

southern california relocation dude: It’s OK to Say This House is Not the Right One and You Should! - 10/22/17 10:42 PM
It’s OK to Say This House is Not the Right One,
and You Should!

House hunting is a pretty emotional process, with lots of excitement and anticipation once you find homes you are interested in seeing, especially when you are first starting on your search. There can be lots of ups and downs in your emotions, especially when excitement about a certain home turns to immediate disappointment when you walk in the door, or when you are pleasantly surprised at what you find.

Hopefully, you are embarking on your house search with your pre-approval in hand, and with a pretty good idea of what … (28 comments)

southern california relocation dude: Look! Up There on the Roof! - 10/21/17 12:03 PM
Clay Roof-top Decoration

It's always interesting to come across something intriquing but unexpected, if you are paying attention, as was the case of spying this roof decoration on a house in Aguanga CA on the way through the mountains to the desert.

I'm not quite sure what kind of creature it was - somewhat dragon-like or perhaps a dinosaur - but it looked a bit menacing and perhaps was there to ward off evil spirits. I couldn't resist grabbing my camera, of course.

This house also had a small market and we had stopped to buy some fresh produce on our way to Palm … (12 comments)

southern california relocation dude: Throwback Thursday: Snowy Rural Mailboxes - 10/19/17 05:08 PM
Snowy Rural Mailboxes

We've made  multiple trip to the California desert since moving here, including in the winter. On one trek there was a bit of snow in the Santa Rosa mountains before heading down the hill into the desert. We passed by this row of rural mailboxes on every trip and stopped several times to grab photos at different times of the year (these photos are from February 2013).

Good thing - a few years ago all the mailboxes (there were well more than 50) disappeared. Guess the post office started delivery at the homes, or made residents come to the … (28 comments)

southern california relocation dude: Wordless Wednesday: Golf Cart Parking Only - 10/18/17 12:01 PM
Golf Cart Parking Only

One of the tell-tale signs of being in a golf resort community is the golf cart parking at the local grocery store. I spied this on one of our many trips to Palm Desert, one of the California Desert Cities. It was the middle of the day in the winter, so I suspect most golfers were out on the course, and not doing their grocery shopping.

Dia de los Muertos Celebration in Carlsbad 2017

Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park is a wonderful place to visit in Carlsbad, with a number of special events during the year – a movie night, a wild west festival. And this Halloween season they have added a Dia de los Muertos Celebration, the “Day of the Dead.” [top photo is a Dia de los Muertos altar at the Westin Hotel in Cancun from a visit in 2009]

Ventura Farmers Market - A Riot of Colors

It's always fun to go to other farmers markets we aren't familiar with, especially in other parts of California. Today I seemed to be paying more attention to the many colors and snapping a few photos, to the extent I could while keeping watch over an inquisitive and active 26-month-old granddaughter.

southern california relocation dude: Throwback Thursday: Just Sitting Here a Little Boar'd - 08/17/17 09:12 AM
Boar Statue in Sonoma Valley Wine Country

We've seen a number of boar statues on our travels, most of them in Italy. One was a very cool looking (as far as boars go) stuffed boar outside a butcher shop in the Piazza della Cisterna in San Gimignano, a very charming hill town in Tuscany and well worth a visit (we even had a boar dish at a local restaurant there, a common food in that area). We saw another in the town square in Greve in Tuscany, and no doubt others I am forgetting.

This boar statue was at a beautiful winery in … (20 comments)

Al Fresco Dining at Lake Tahoe

The food wasn't fancy, but the views were stunning, and the company was excellent (my wife) for this casual al fresco lunch a few years ago at Lake Tahoe. We spent several days at a house there, courtesy of a buyer client as a thank you. No reservations were needed and we were the only ones dining there at the time.
