The face of Carlsbad Village has changed in many ways in recent years, with a number of residential complexes completed (e.g., SummerHouse, Seagrove, BeachWalk, Carlyle Carlsbad Village, Bungalows 8, Eleven West, and more) or underway (The Lofts at Carlsbad Village [apartments], Sea Glass), as well as commercial space and new restaurants.
The State Street area north of Grand Avenue has seen, and continues to see, both residential and commercial development.

It seems like just a few weeks ago that I learned about the future demise of the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall. In reality it was last fall when I first heard about this.
This quirky, fun-looking set of buildings has housed multiple vendors, and been a staple of the Village, for about 30 years.
The Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall is being torn down, or perhaps more correctly - re-used and renovated - to be replaced by State Street Commons, an upscale multi-purpose facility reportedly with 21,000 SF of restaurant and (14 comments)
The sad news for many in Carlsbad is that this iconic collection of vendor booths for art, antiques, collectibles, and so much more - here for several decades - along with the Mas Fina Cantina, a yoga studio and a jewelry store, will be closing to make room for State Street Commons, a 21,000 SF upscale retail and restaurant center. I believe the mall itself is now closed (BTW these photos were taken in 2008).
As one can well imagine there is a bit of controversy over this new project that will (23 comments)
