surfing: The Royal Kook Celebrates the Royal Wedding in Cardiff California - 04/30/11 01:43 PM
The Royal Wedding in Cardiff: Cardiff, California, That Is
Cardiff was in a celebratory mood yesterday, as were millions around the world, who watched the Royal Wedding yesterday, and again and again on the Internet and TV.
Cardiff had its own celebration in honor of the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Ms. Catherine Middleton.
The famous, and somewhat controversial Surfing Statue got all dressed up for the occasion, complete with crown, train and bouquet. The wedding dress was stunning, although perhaps not as beautiful as the Bride's. The Cardiff Kook, as it is called by locals because of what … (19 comments)

surfing: A Visit to Swami's Beach in Encinitas CA | Surfing Nirvana for Some - 12/05/10 03:43 PM
A Visit to Swami's Beach in Encinitas CA - It May be Surfing Nirvana for Some
Swami's Beach is one of the more famous surfing beaches in the North San Diego County coastal area. It certainly has a cool name.
And being relocated adjacent to the Self-Realization Fellowship, founded by Swami Paramahansa Yogananda in 1937, often regarded as the founder of Yoga in the western world, helps to understand the name, a nickname which has stuck for generations.
It's pretty amazing to stand at the edge of the continent and take in the scenery, and the surfing. The hike down … (10 comments)

surfing: There's a Message There Somewhere - 10/23/10 02:17 PM

I saw this van parked along the coast road in Cardiff-by-the Sea (a.k.a. Cardiff) across from the beach. No doubt it belongs to a surfer, judging from the wetsuit hanging outside.
I was stopped at the light and fortunately had a few seconds to snap a photo. You see all sorts of interesting vehicles here in California, especially near the beach. This one was a real prize, I think.
I would have liked to have met the owner!! It's a slice of surfing life here in SoCal.

surfing: Hey It's Summer in San Diego - 06/27/10 06:19 AM
Summer in Southern California means a lot of things.

It certainly has hit other parts of the country with vengeance - record heat, humidity, rain, thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Here along the Carlsbad coast we have yet to see much of a chance in temperature, and June gloom is still prevalent. That will change. The desert is already heating up to the 3 digits.
Summer means lots of things, though...my summer photo, for one - recycled every summer for the past 3 years. Taken right after coming off the beach, it comes out at the beginning of summer and goes … (6 comments)

surfing: Undressing by the Side of the Road - 06/27/09 11:57 AM
That got you didn't it? And now you just have the read on...
It's a pretty common sight here in Southern California; folks undressing by the side of the road. Maybe it bothers you, maybe it doesn't. You may not give a hoot...which seems to be the case of many. Are you disappointed there are no pictures?

This is really for visitors and folks moving to the area, since Southern Californias already know this - the folks undressing by the side of the road are, of course, the surfers. Lest you think they are all running around the neighborhoods and … (9 comments)

surfing: Carlsbad Area Summer Camps and Programs 2009 - 05/21/09 08:36 AM
Summer is about here, school is almost over, and it's time to get your kids enrolled in day camps or other programs during the summer, if you haven't done so already.
The number of variety of programs to choose from in the North County San Diego area (especially Carlsbad) is mind boggling - surfing, sports, academics, religious, art, music and so much more. Here is just a sampling of opportunities to fit a wide range of interests, schedules (some are short term so you can fit in several of them this summer), and budgets to keep the kiddos busy, learning and having … (5 comments)

surfing: The California Surf Museum in Oceanside, California - 03/26/09 12:04 PM
When one thinks of Southern California one likely thinks of beaches and, of course, surfing.
Surfing in Southern California has played a significant role in the development of the sport, and of the growth in many coastal towns.
It is, indeed, for many a lifestyle, with a culture and even a language all its own. Consider how surfing spawned movies (remember Gidget?) and songs (hey, where would be Beach Boys be without surfing?).
It is likely a rare beach along the coast that does not appeal to surfers for different reasons, and some areas have become downright famous...such as Swami's Beach … (11 comments)

surfing: A Winter Day in Carlsbad - Really? - 01/11/09 06:24 AM

Yesterday was an amazing weather day here in Carlsbad. January 10, several weeks into winter, and it was 75 degrees. My kind of weather.
The reason for the heat is a mixed blessing. The Santa Anas from inland were kicking up, with some substantial gusts of wind in some communities (I heard close to 80 mph in some inland canyon areas), the haze from the previous day was gone, and it was a spectacular clear sunny day, with droves of people enjoying the summer-like day. The surfers were out in abundance - I captured some in these photos climbing down … (8 comments)

surfing: Cool Idea - Learn to Surf in Encinitas AND Help Save the Environment - 04/19/08 02:29 PM
No, we’re not talking about how surfing in and of itself will save the environment. Of course if you could commute to work that way and save the gas…
But this is such a cool idea I wanted to share it.
Encinitas, California is known for many things, in particular poinsettias and surfing. Surf shops are everywhere, as are surfers and their boards. There are a number of prime surf beaches, with Swami’s being the most famous. Being as popular as it is, one can readily find a surfing school to teach you how to ride the waves.
I have … (4 comments)

surfing: Carlsbad Things to Do - Visit the California Surf Museum in Oceanside - 09/01/07 11:31 AM
As a non-surfing surfing enthusiast, I recently wrote about surfing in the Southern California area, focusing on Carlsbad, Encinitas and Cardiff. I mentioned the California Surf Museum in Oceanside but had not yet paid a visit. So I could not comment very much.
Well, today I stopped in on my way home from showing Oceanside homes- and I'm glad I did. While I do not yet surf, I absolutely am enthralled with the history of the sport here in Southern California and the lifestyles that have evolved.
Surfing has had a tremendous impact on communities, sports, attitudes and much, and to live … (13 comments)
