wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Carlsbad Hailstorm
- 01/27/21 11:58 AM
Wordless Wednesday: Carlsbad Hailstorm Perhaps this should have been titled Wordless Monday, which was when we had our winter storm with very heavy winds and lots of rain in the San Diego area for most of the day, but beginning over the weekend. And we got to enjoy a hailstorm, too...for about 2 minutes. It was quite loud and the cats were both freaked out. I haven't seen hail, at least at our house, since 2006.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Lunch at the Beach
- 01/13/21 04:23 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Lunch at the Beach We enjoyed a couple hours at the beach in Carlsbad on Sunday, with a picnic lunch...something we haven't done since the pandemic began. It was a partly sunny day with some interesting clouds, and a light breeze that made us glad we wore heavier jackets. The beach was not crowded and people were spread out, and it was wonderful to just sit and talk, and stare out at the ocean and watch the surfers, kids playing in the water, and the pelicans and seagulls soaring overhead.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Stickers Galore
- 01/05/21 10:51 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Bumper Stickers Galore It's probably no surprise to anyone who knows anything about Southern California that we are a surfing culture, with lots of surfers, surfboards, and wetsuits along the coast, in and out of the water. I spied this vintage vehicle and wetsuit in Cardiff by the sea 10 years ago and HAD to stop and snap a photo. This takes bumper stickers to a new level, don't you think?

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: There's a Cuckoo in our House
- 11/05/20 03:43 PM
Wordless Wednesday: A Cuckoo in our House We received this cuckoo clock about 35 years ago from my wife's Mom. It came from the Frankenmuth Clock Company in Michigan, and each of the siblings received one. Our kids were young and thought it was great fun, and we used it for years in our different houses . Thankfully you can turn it off when you don't want to listen to it...like all night long! It's been packed away since the move from Boston 15 years ago, and since we have the grandkids visiting now and then we just recently decided to get it out.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Now Where Did I Park?
- 10/28/20 04:57 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Just Parked We spent a long weekend in Ventura with our daughter, her husband and their 2-year-old daughter back in 2017, staying at a hotel right at the marina. We enjoyed walking around the marina, admiring the boats...and wow were there a lot of them...and listening to the harbor seals several times. I had to laugh at this photo. It made me think of our crowded freeways at rush hour and the sea of cars. Hopefully users get to moor their boats at assigned slips, otherwise how would you keep track of where your boat is. Sorta like coming out to a

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Festive Food Table for Dia de los Muertos
- 10/21/20 04:15 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Festive Food Table for Dia de los Muertos We have attended a very popular Dia de los Muertos ("Day of the Dead") gathering in Cardiff for a number of years - the daughter of our very good friends and former neighbors and there are usually 100 people or so. The food is always amazing; catered, but with guests bringing appetizers or deserts. Sadly there won't be a gathering this year, for obvious reasons, but I'll enjoy reliving past events in all the photos I have. Stay tuned for more.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Rural Mailbox in Roxbury NY
- 10/07/20 02:24 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Rural Mailbox We were in a rural area of upstate New York in Roxbury, in the Catskill Mountains, for our niece's wedding in May 2016 (we even had some snow while we were there). We had some free time and decided to visit a local maple sugar company, and drive around a bit to explore. I spied this quirky mailbox, which seemed particularly well suited to an area where there are a number of farms.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Pink Grass
- 09/23/20 02:18 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Pink Grass We took a walk the other day along the access road to The Preserve, a new build community still under constuction close to our home. There were a number of pretty plantings that have grown since the community was starting to be bilt, but these ornamental grasses were particularly pretty. My research tells me it's Pink Muhly Grass but I may be wrong.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Brazilian Memories
- 09/09/20 08:41 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Brazilian Memories Beach in Paraty, Brazil - a Portuguese Colonial Town Popular for Surfing We have been avid fans of jazz for quite some time, and Brazilian jazz became a favorite of ours when our younger daughter spent 18 months in Sao Paulo in the early part of this millenium as part of her college degree. We have enjoyed it ever since, including the annual Brazilian Jazz Festa concerts here in San Diego every year since 2008, as well as occasional Brazilian bands at the TGIF Concerts during the summer in Carlsbad! For us, there is something magical, and relaxing, about

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Almost Full Moon Through the Trees
- 09/02/20 06:30 PM
Wordless Wednesday Almost Full Moon Through the Trees We've had beautiful evenings recently and have been enjoying the moon as it's been moving toward become full. So often the marine layer moves in during the evening and obscure it. The moon was getting close to being full the other and while the marine layer was starting to creep in we had a gorgeous views through the palm trees in our back yard. Unfortunately while I tried everal times this was the best photo I could come up with on my camera. You get the idea.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Fragrant Beauty at the Front Door
- 08/26/20 09:02 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Fragrant Beauty at the Front Door We gave my Mom a beautiful pink, and very fragrant, rose in a pot for Mother's Day, which she enjoyed immensely for a few months. Recently, for some reason it started to not thrive at her condo, perhaps due to the light on the patio and her not being able to take care of it. In any case we brought it to our house a couple weeks ago and set it outside our front door where it is, once again, thriving and providing a beautiful, fragrant entrance to our home.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: A Passion for Art, and Sharing
- 08/12/20 06:08 PM
A Not So Wordless Wednesday: A Passion for Art, and Sharing We started collecting art soon after we were married, with young kids and a rather limited budget. But that didn't matter. Our passion for art not only takes us to museums and galleries wherever we travel, but also results in having far more works of art that we can hang in our house...by far. Somehow the passion for collecting took over although we have slowed in our purchases in recent years. That passion also led to being gallery owners for 3 years in Cambridge, MA across the river from Boston prior to

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Thanks USPS!!
- 08/05/20 10:08 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Thanks USPS!! It's always nice to get a thank you. And we have heard lots of thank yous, and seen plenty of thank you signs in our area during the pandemic...not doubt you have noticed, too. I pick up my Mom's mail for her daily at her condo complex and on Mnday spied this artfully painted rock and thank you at the cluster mailboxes. I thought it was a nice touch, and hopefully USPS appreciated it as well.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: The Demise of the Reefs
- 07/08/20 08:04 PM
Wordless Wednesday: The Demise of the Reefs No, we're not talking about the demise of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and others which are suffering, but my Reef Sandals, which bit the dust yesterday. It's funny how attached you can get to something like a shoe. I bought them about 15 years ago when we first moved to Carlsbad. They were very comfortable and I have traveled many a mile in them: miles of walks along and on the beaches, travels to dinner and various events, long walks and hikes in Maui and Kauai. Somehow I thought they would be around forever!

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Words of Hope
- 05/27/20 06:29 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Words of Hope Hope Elementary School in the Carlsbad School District is close to my house and we often walk by. School is coming to an end for Carlsbad students on June 11th and signs have started appearing in the front of the school to thank the teachers, etc. I thought the play on words of some of the signage, given the school name, was cool. And this little poem a la Dr. Seuss was clever - a sign of the times!! Nice to see some words of Hope these days!

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Pink Roses
- 04/22/20 03:34 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Pink Roses I always enjoy the flowers where I live, especially when out walking in our neighborhood or when out showing property. Right now having the shelter-in-place means a walk, and the flowers are even more meaningful. And with the gorgeous weather we are experiencing right now - mid 70s, bright sun, blue sky - things are even better. We have some neighbors that have particularly beautiful gardens and no matter what time of year there is beauty to behold. And we did on our walk yesterday - they are sort of a lavender pink! Roses bloom here for many months, unlike

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Fuschia-Pink Flowers Brighten the Day
- 04/15/20 04:57 PM
Wordless Wednesday Fuschia-Pink Flowers to Brighten the Day in Carlsbad It's been a gorgeous day here in Carlsbad, perhaps the nicest we've had in a few weeks - high 60s by the beach, almost 80 inland. It was especially welcome after the chilly and rainy weather we had all last week until Sunday evening when the storm finally headed east. I was on my way to run an errand in Carlsbad Village - in the car only - and had to stop to snap this photo and enjoy the beauty for a minute. These flowers, a plot roughly 15' by 30', positively glowed in

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Everyone Needs a Buddy Sometimes
- 03/11/20 05:55 PM
Wordless Wednesday: Everyone Needs a Buddy Sometime We were in Manhattan Beach on Sunday having breakfast with our daughter and her family. As we have often done in this charming beach town, we took a quick walk after our meal. I spied this cat and his/her buddy up on the 3rd floor deck of a beautiful contemporary home taking in the gorgeous ocean views down the hill, and could not resist snapping a photo. Wish the angle would have allowed me to also capture the view. The guy went back inside...perhaps to fill up the coffee mug...and the cat followed, no doubt hoping

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: Sounds of Nature in Carlsbad
- 02/19/20 11:35 AM
Wordless Wednesday: Sounds of Nature in Carlsbad Just a bit of explanation for what appears to be a blank video - we've had a visitor outside our back door several times recently. The main reason for recording this was to share with the grandkids who immediately figured out what it was. I called the Agua Hedionda Nature Center who said it was likely a Pacific Tree frog. I've heard them over at my Mom's condo complex too, and during the day.

wordless wednesday: Wordless Wednesday: A Raptor Visitor
- 12/04/19 10:17 AM
Wordless Wednesday: A Raptor Visitor Our house backs up to a wooded canyon and as a result we get all kinds of bird and wild life. We often see hawks nearby in the sky hunting, or nesting in the trees, and occasionally one lands on our fence, as this one did the other day. I believe it's a Cooper's Hawk, which are pretty common in San Diego. As soon as they appear all the other birds disappear...with good reason.
