The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional harvest celebration observed by many Asian cultures on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar (this year on September 13). Families gather together on this night to share an elaborate meal, and then go outside to view the full moon. The giving of mooncakes and the lighting of lanterns are prominent activities.
