realtor safety: I Paid for This Real Estate Safety Tip With Blood - 10/02/15 11:06 PM
I'm sure all agents have heard about Realtor Safety Month, Safety Tips, Self Defense, Safety Plans, etc. But with a hurricane approaching the East coast and predicted to hit NC and VA, we did the usual preperations. We filled tubs inside with water, located flashlights and check batteries and placed them where they could be easily found, put a couple bags of ice in coolers in case we had to remove food from refrigerator and freezer if power went out for a few days, made sure lighter was handy to use for lighting stove, filled water tanks out in field for … (5 comments)

realtor safety: Suspect Arrested in Rape Attempts on Two Realtors - 08/12/15 02:15 AM
Rapists and agents come in all sizes and ages. In one case described in the linked story, the suspect in the atacks was 63 and the agent was 69. Sounds like the agent is still in pretty good physical shape since she managed to break free from the attacker.
This scenario just shows that you can't judge people by appearances, and every potential buyer should be subject to the agents review and safety screening process.
I'm sure by now these agents know what they should or shouldn't have done. Like, don't let a potential buyer call you into a room with some lame … (7 comments)

realtor safety: Realtor Showing House Attacked by Man in Dress and Wig - 07/29/15 08:38 AM
This scenario brings up a lot of questions. ( 1) At what point did the agent notice the potential buyer was a man dressed like a woman? (2) Would she be accused of discrimination and face disiplinary action if she refused to work with this person and not show him/her the house? (3) Did they meet at the house and drive seperate cars? (4) How does an agent show a house by standing on the front porch and telling the person to go in and look? I can see that if it was in a remote area, vacant, no power, a … (39 comments)

realtor safety: Two More FL Real Estate Agents Robbed - Safety Review - 06/05/15 10:35 PM
Well, it has happened again, this time in Florida. Agents meeting people they really didn't know much about at vacant houses, then being tied up and robbed at gunpoint. I'm sure most of you reading this will be shaking your head and thinking " don't agents ever learn"? In one story, this armed gunman / robber was being referred to as a " client". Many agents don't know the difference between a client and customer. If he really was a " client", then the agent should have interviwed him, and probably would have had something to identify him, like a copy … (13 comments)

realtor safety: Home Inspector Charged in Sexual Assault - 04/22/15 09:49 PM
Who would have thought? This is just another reason agents need to know something about the home inspectors and everyone else who is involved in a real estate transaction. Maybe a buyer hires a friend, or a friend or co-workers boyfriend or husband to do their home inspection. They can't get off work to attend home inspection, but agent meets inspector at vacant home. You can see the scenario forming... inspector tells agent he found a problem in the basement utility room and wants to show agent so she can explain it to her buyers......
Same scenario can happen with carpet cleaners, … (22 comments)

realtor safety: Another Real Estate Sales Lady Attacked at Model Home in VA - 10/11/14 12:26 AM

It's only been a couple of weeks or so since agent Beverly Carter was attacked and murdered when she met someone at an vacant home. Realtor safety is on eveyone's mind lately. This latest assault took place in Glen Allen VA at a model home. Note that this model home is in a neighborhood with houses all around it, so agents can never assume they are safe in a vacant home no matter how many other homes are nearby. This incident is just another reminder for agents to constantly be on alert. I'm beginning to think that these ladies … (5 comments)

realtor safety: VA State Police Still Seek Tips in REALTOR's Murder - Cold Case - 08/13/13 11:50 PM
Who knows what happened that day? Was it a random robbery, someone she knew, an upset client, or possibly another agent? Was agent Weigelhofer alone in her office? Was office unlocked? Did she think she was about to greet a walk -in and pick up a new buyer or seller? Was there anything she could have done that might have saved her life? realtor safety: Virginia Police Cracking Down on Drivers Violating New Texting Law - 07/16/13 03:39 AM
With accidents, injuries, and deaths increasing as a result of distracted drivers texting and driving while in many cases going 55+ MPH, several Police depts are using unmarked SUV's to drive in traffic to catch texting drivers. Fines and penalties were increased as well. So if you see an unmarked SUV pacing along side of you, you might be being watched. If you're texting, you'll know soon enough when the SUV slows down and pulls in behind you.

realtor safety: Virginia Launches " Orange Cones No Phones" Initiative. Prince William - 05/15/13 05:21 AM
Why you have to tell a driver to stay of their phone while driving through work zones on route 95 is beyond understanding. As mentioned in this article, trucks and machinery are leaving and entering the roadways. Workers are working throughout the work zone, and many are near the travel lanes. Why would someone risk causing an accident, injury, or death just so they can make a phone call that probably doesn't even need to be made? All calls and text messages can wait. Yet there are thousands of drivers on the road that think their life is more important than … (2 comments)
