Try to move on a Saturday.  You get 1 extra day to get the new home in order. Avoid moving on holidays if possible.  Movers may not be available and there’s lots of traffic Check the sprinklers if you have them. Make sure they work and the timer is set properly. Meet the neighbors.  Introduce yourself and be friendly. Drive the neighborhood and acclimate yourself Contact the school where the children will attend and get their registration completed before the move Locate the school bus stop and show the children the safest route Unpack the children first if they can’t do it themselves.

Continuing my series on moving tips, here are the next 5 tips....
Put out the welcome mat Create a chores list.  If you’re upgrading you may have new chores that need to be addressed. To clean a lavatory bowl: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the bowl and… Let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers – Fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean. Order dinner in – Pizza, burgers anything quick and easy to clean up. Have plenty of water/sports drinks available on moving day. Test everything in the new home moving day. Make sure everything still works. Put pets outside during moving day. Give pets time to adjust to the new home.  Let them smell and walk around freely.

Contact phone company before the move and schedule installation close to move in date. Contact a real estate agent for all necessary phone numbers Obtain and fill out a change of address form from the post office Have cash and credit cards on hand for emergencies and purchases day of move Before moving day, place signs at entrance of rooms for movers to place marked boxes.

Bubble wrap delicate and fragile items.  This includes art work! Move fragile and delicate items yourself prior to moving day if possible Pack comfort and hygiene items in a travel case and keep it with you Have paper plates, cups and plastic utensils available for dinner and lunch moving day Have important phones numbers with you and obtain them well in advance (water, elect, phone etc.)

Get friends to confirm their help Friends with teenagers are a great resource.  Hire the teenagers to help with the move. Confirm your move with the moving company at least 3 weeks prior and then weekly until the day before the move. Always pack first in last out.  If you need, it should be on top. Pack boxes by room and label each box for each room

Buy extra light bulbs Keep a flash light handy Install new locks for the front, back and side doors.  You don’t know who has keys to the old locks. Hire a moving company well in advance (at least 2 months). If moving yourself, reserve the moving truck well in advance

Get plenty of rope or twine for tying up boxes Use rope to tie up small stacks of books for easy moving Use towels inside boxes to cushion fragile items from impact label all boxes with contents and room in which it belongs Wrap furniture and appliances in movers wrap – it helps reduce impacts on furniture
