san diego county: San Diego County in 2010, by the numbers - 02/26/11 07:55 AM

San Diego County in 2010, by the numbers
San Diego County's new tax assessor (actually assessor-recorder-clerk), Ernie Dronenberg, wants to change the dates that property taxes are due, and I'm not going to argue with him because the due dates right now are just flat-out bad. Currently the first installment is due on December 10, right before Christmas, and the second installment is due April 10, just before income taxes are due. Dronenberg wants to shift first to March 10 and November 10, and ultimately to January 1 and July 1. I like the January/July dates.
Recently the assessor's office released … (7 comments)

san diego county: San Diego County to consider changing its general land-use plan - 10/20/10 12:13 PM

San Diego County to consider changingits general land-use plan
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors at its meeting this morning was supposed to consider significantly changing the general land-use plan that provides development guidance for unincorporated areas of the County. This would be the first major update of the land-use plan since 1978.
Current estimates put the population in unincorporated areas at 500,000 with a projected increase of 194,000 in the next forty years. There are an estimated 170,000 houses in unincorporated houses.
The essence of the changes would limit future development in rural areas, forcing most of the … (3 comments)

san diego county: San Diego County radio stations - 10/08/09 01:20 PM
Many years ago when I got my first car with a CD player in it, I thought I would never listen to radio in the car again. Alas, sometimes I still find myself listening to FM stations.
One of our local stations, KGB at 101.5, has a morning talk show with Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw that is recorded and repeated each night at 7:00.
The other night I found myself without CDs in the car and a repeat on of the show that I had listened to that morning, so I went to switch stations. What I found was that my three … (9 comments)

san diego county: Bad news for Trestles surfers - 09/09/09 10:20 AM
One of the best places for surfing here in California is a place called Trestles. The wave quality is considered "world class," and the crowd is mostly experienced surfers.
Trestles has never been easy to get to, mainly because it's in an isolated location of San Onofre State Beach, so roads and parking are limited. Most people going to Trestles have traditionally parked in a parking lot adjacent to Carl's Jr. off of Cristianitos Road (1023-C1 for Thomas Guide users). That's just the beginning of the journey, though, because then one has to carry one's surfboard for a 30-minute walk on … (4 comments)

san diego county: Shopping and entertainment at Viejas - 09/07/09 04:05 AM
One of the best places to go for shopping and entertainment in San Diego County is the Viejas Casino and Viejas Outlet Center in Alpine, about 25 miles east of your Mission Valley condo.
The Casino, along with gaming, of course, has one of the best buffets in all of the county. Across the street at the Outlet Center has to be one of the most beautifully landscaped malls in all the country, not just the county, mainly because it's an outdoor mall in the beautiful pine trees in the mountain community of Alpine.
The Viejas Indian band recently announced that … (4 comments)

san diego county: Mission Valley condos, San Diego CA: Condo living - Sharing water - 08/18/09 01:19 PM
This is the fourth in my "Condo living" series. To find previous posts in the series, simply click here.
If you buy a Mission Valley condo that was converted from an apartment, it's highly likely that you will share a water heater with a few other condominiums. If you do share a water heater, usually the condominium association pays the water and water heating bills.
It's virtually assured that if you buy a condo in a high rise, such as some of the condo towers in downtown San Diego, water, including heated water, is provided by the condo association, often from … (7 comments)

san diego county: Mission Valley condos, San Diego CA: Here's why.... - 07/24/09 03:50 AM
One of the reasons why Mission Valley condos are so popular is because Mission Valley is centrally located in San Diego.
Within a thirty-mile radius of your Mission Valley condo is about 80% of everything that San Diego has to offer:
Go north, and you'll find Quail Botanical Gardens, Legoland, the Carlsbad Flower Fields, the San Diego Wild Animal Park, the Torrey Pines Gliderport and the Torrey Pines Golf Course, home of the 2008 U.S. Open Golf championship. You'll find La Jolla and about 200 seals at the Cove, surfing in Encinitas and Carlsbad, the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, and … (11 comments)

san diego county: What a great missed opportunity.... - 07/23/09 07:12 AM
We all know that governments leave a little to be desired when it comes to logic (a little?).
San Diego in April 1993 claimed that they wanted more people to live and work downtown, so they set about doing things that would bring more people downtown, such as finally getting a major grocery store downtown, adding walkways, cleaning up depressed blocks, and generally making it a more pleasant environment to live and work in.
Part of living, in my opinion, is raising the family, so if people were going to do more than just work downtown, there would have to be … (19 comments)

san diego county: SST (Speechless Sunday with Text): A good reason for being late - 07/12/09 09:15 AM
Russel Ray, who is my marketing guru, rewards his top five successful Marketing and Business Consulting clients with a trip to the San Diego Zoo at the end of each quarter.
Although Russel has always done my marketing for me -- for reasons obvious to readers in the know :) -- and I'm always qualified to go to the Zoo as one of his top Clients, I pass. I pass because, well, because I have an annual pass to the Zoo. Of course, I never miss an opportunity to go to the Zoo....

san diego county: Red-light cameras in the City of San Diego - 06/29/09 05:44 AM

If you don't know it by now, Big Brother is here, and he's keeping his eye on you, all in the interest of safety and the good of the public.
If you walk into a grocery store in San Diego County, it's highly probable that you'll see some television screens, and if you're lucky, you'll see your smiling face on them.
If you get gas at almost any service gasoline station, inside there are a couple of television screens keeping an eye on everyone at the gas pumps.
If you go to any mall, don't look now, but there's a … (13 comments)
