July is National Park and Recreation Month, and the City of Henderson has 31 ways that you can participate. Henderson NV is well-known for its parks having won several awards including Playful City USA, Bicycle Friendly Community, and a Gold Medal from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration. With 58 neighborhood and community parks, 14 dog parks, 11 aquatic facilities, 8 recreation centers, and 6 skate parks, there’s something for everyone in Henderson. The main event in Henderson is the Fourth of July Celebration at Mission Hills Park. It's been a busy and productive last few weeks for me working with buyers from Pennsylvania and Hawaii. Long days showing homes and helping them get acclimated to southern Nevada meant short walks in the park with my dog after dinner.
This morning I 'scheduled an appointment' with Shadow at Heritage Bark Park. It's been a while since he'd seen his friend Fitz, and he got in a few fence runs with the big dogs in the adjacent area.

Spring-like temperatures have returned to Henderson just in time for this Saturday's Bark In The Park. Dog lovers and their pups will be at Paseo Verde Park in Green Valley Ranch from 10AM to 2PM for demonstrations, contests, adoptions and more! These photos are some of the 2009 attendees, from my dog Sundance in the upper left to a couple of leather-clad chihuahuas that are ready to roll!

One of the best ways to end the day is a trip to Heritage Bark Park with Shadow. The park has sweeping panoramic views of the Las Vegas valley, including the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. Not to be outdone, sometimes nature puts on a show of its own as the sun dips behind Black Mountain.

This is Barcules, the mascot of the new Bark Park at Heritage Park in Henderson NV. And for a little size perspective, that's my dog, Shadow. (No, I don't think you'll get to take that bone home, Shadow!)
Bark Park is part of the 160-acre Heritage Park. The 5-acre space has three separate areas for small dogs (under 25 pounds), large dogs, and an all dog area that includes an agility course. Henderson Nevada's Cool Pools It's strange that as I write this on June 12, the temperature in Henderson is an unseasonably cool 72 degrees. But soon enough it will rise to the triple digits, maybe even past 110. When that happens, there's sure to be an increase in activity at the seven public pools run by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department as residents try to beat the heat.

Just ten minutes into the Anthem East Trail, hikers are rewarded with this scenic view of Henderson and the Las Vegas Strip. Built with funding from the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) and Del Webb Corporation, the trail runs seven miles along the McCullough Mountain Range from Anthem Hills Park to Shadow Canyon. Open from dawn to dusk, Anthem East Trail allows bicyclists and pets (must be on leash) and prohibits motor vehicles. Anthem Hills Park is at 2256 Reunion Drive in Henderson NV.
