ozarks: Early Spring For Shell Knob - 01/27/12 08:35 AM
I can't say that the Redbuds are blooming, but my Forsythia and Jonquils are popping way too early with the calendar still showing January. I can only remember one other year, in the 20+ that I've lived here, that has been this mild. The Ozarks (SW Missouri) tend to miss the heavy duty winters of the northern climes. This is true and often a reason to entice seniors to move here. With temps currently in the 50's, we still need a lightweight jacket, but still too cool for my tastes to be the fellow I saw yesterday kayaking on Table Rock … (1 comments)

ozarks: New Shell Knob Year - 01/06/12 06:24 AM
Happy New Year from the Ozarks. If real estate sales will go up in the same manner that our winter temps are, then 2012 will be a good year.

It has been a mild winter in Shell Knob and my outdoor thermometer is currently reading 69 degrees! Normal for January would be in the 40's.
Eagle Watching Days are being held this week end at several area lakes. It is a real pleasure to watch an eagle swoop by and snatch a fish for his breakfast. Birds are a constant source of amazement to me since moving here to Table … (0 comments)

ozarks: Carving Eureka - 04/04/11 08:45 AM
In two more weeks the chips will be flying in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.  The annual woodcarving with chainsaws attracts artists to NW Arkansas for the competition which changes plain logs into wonders of wood.
April 15 -16 are the competition dates.  The artworks that are created will be auctioned off on Saturday at 4 pm.
Eureka Springs is a 'Must See' stop for tourists to the Ozarks.  It's turn of the century streets, shops and hotel attract many visitors to this part of the Ozarks.

ozarks: FROGGIN' TIME IS HERE - 06/28/08 09:16 AM
'TIS THE SEASON
Do you start to salivate at the thought of a special delicasie sauted in garlic butter?  This treat can be  expensive, but  persons of a mind for this tastey delight can start collecting it this week -  free for the taking.

I'm speaking of  FROG SEASON in the Ozarks.  It starts June 30 and runs through October   31.  It's classified as both a hunting and a fishing season, depending on the method used to   catch the bullfrogs.

Shades of Mark Twain - bullfrog hunting is as much a tradition for the Ozarks as some of … (3 comments)

ozarks: FERAL HOGS MOVE NORTH - 03/01/08 03:45 AM
SPRING CONFERENCE IN ST. LOUIS
There will be a national conference on Feral Hog Management April 13-15 in St. Louis.
Feral hogs - domestic hogs that have escaped or been released deliberately into the wild - are spreading north.  They destroy cropland, as well as sensitive habitats on public lands.

The 2008 conference location in St. Louis reflects the spread of feral hogs northward.  According to the Missouri Conservation organization, the gathering gives those coping with new invasions the chance to learn solutions from southern managers' and researchers' eradication experiences.

The theme of the conference is: BAR THE GATE IN 2008.

ozarks: HOME SELLER'S REPORT CARD - 02/11/08 07:17 AM

As a Realtor, would you sometimes like to leave a report card for the home seller to read, after you have shown the property?  I showed four  Ozark area properties yesterday and two of the four would have gotten an A (the one I've pictured an A+), but the others would have gotten  a D and a C.

The D could have stood for Disaster.  It was in a total state of moving, repairing, not repairing and dirty.  In my humble opinion, homes that are not ready for buyers to see, should not be listed or shown until they are empty and … (3 comments)

OZARK  JOKES?
As a Realtor in Shell Knob, MO, I've been sent all the usual hillbilly jokes from my Yankee friends, but seeing some of these MLS pictures makes me start to wonder if the jokes are true.  No wonder these homes aren't sold!

ozarks: ILLEGALS CAUGHT AT MISSOURI LINE - 12/27/07 07:15 AM
UNDOCUMENTED ELK DETAINED

Somehow, when I think of the Ozarks, I don't connect the area with wild Elk.  Do you?  The above headline got my attention when I saw it in a small local paper.

Seems an Oklahoma wildlife officer pulled over three stock trailers headed for a game farm in Barry County, Missouri, not far from Shell Knob, where I live.  The trailers contained five adult bull elk (think BIG), three young elk bulls and two elk cows. The men transporting the elk had no documents indicating the animals had come from a facility that monitors animal health.
The drivers said the … (3 comments)

ozarks: GOOD WATERFOWL PROSPECTS IN OZARKS - 12/01/07 07:30 AM
 DUCK HUNTING STARTS

It looks to be a good season for duck hunters in southern Missouri this year, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.  Deer hunting grabs more headlines, but this is a special time of year for waterfowl enthusiasts.
In Missouri, the sport is divided into zones to try to sync hunting times to peak migration periods.  The South Zone, which covers all of southwest Missouri and the southern part of the state,  opened November 23 and runs through January 30.
Prospects look good for duck hunters MDOC reports, due to a survey done in the spring in Canada and … (3 comments)

ozarks: 6 INTERESTING STREETS - 09/24/07 08:32 AM

When 911 service finally came to small town Missouri, residents were allowed to submit potential street names for their roads, with some amusing results.
Many small towns have the usual streets running east-west named after trees: Oak, Maple, etc.  And with the north-south roads given names after States: Illinois, Texas, Michigan, etc.

Those grid type names didn't fit in the Ozark's hills.  They went for more originality.  The numbers aren't in yet, as to whether these addresses would be an asset or not for resales in Shell Knob.   Would you want to live on STONER DRIVE?

ozarks: NUMBERS DON'T LIE - 07/20/07 08:13 AM

2007 Real Estate Sales Pale Compared to '06As a local agent, I would like to see specifics on the local Shell Knob area real estate market,  but these numbers are not available.  We must deduce our individual statistics from the larger area surrounding us,and share in the total numbers.

The first six months of this year saw only half the number of new listings that the same period of time did January to June 2006, in the Tri- Lakes area.
There were 3,954 listings in that six month period in 2006, compared to 2,072 this year.  This confirms our local problem of … (6 comments)

ozarks: DANGER IN OZARKS - 06/11/07 07:15 AM
 LOW WATER CROSSINGS KILL

When first moving to Shell Knob and I encountered a Low Water Crossing after heavy spring rains,  the surprise of seeing water rushing over the road, was surpassed by the deafening roar of this powerful force of nature.

Then I got confused by the terminology LOW WATER - shouldn't that mean that the water was actually 'low'?  Seemed to me that it should say HIGH WATER.  In reality, a Low Water Bridge provides a bridge for when the water is actually low.
Southwest Missouri has had an unusual amount of rain this week, and as usual, there … (2 comments)

ozarks: BRUINS ARE HUNGREY - 05/25/07 04:39 PM
 BEWARE OF THE BEAR

Can you imagine waking up from a three month nap?  No coffee.  You are hungry and  the fridge is empty!   That is how bears feel in June.    So they go on the prowl for food, and nothing else.  No nonsense.

Last November I had a rare sighting on the edge of Shell Knob, of a black bear and her two cubs.  It was Thanksgiving, but unusually warm.  The bears were probably stoking up for the winter hibernation.
I was thrilled to have my first view of them outside of a zoo.  Unfortunately I didn't have a … (3 comments)

ozarks: SECRET BLESSINGS - 05/08/07 10:13 AM
EYE OPENERS IN SHELL KNOB COUNTRY
On my way into the office today I was looking at the lush new growth of spring and thanking God for giving me such a marvelous feast for my eyes.  We've had a nice week of gentle rain and after a rain it seems that the greens are greener. The bright red Indian Paintbrush flowers just pop out in the pastures. They shared space with the wild daisies that seem to be the roadside flower of choice this week.
The feast for my nose are the honeysuckle vines, which are in full bloom on the roadsides.
I paid … (4 comments)

ozarks: TURTLE-LIKE SPEEDS AROUND SHELL KNOB - 04/02/07 07:32 AM
SLOW DOWN SHELL KNOB  Traveling around Shell Knob?  Slow down and keep alert for turtles crossing the road.  You have a greater chance of not injuring the turtles, and it will give you better gas mileage. Turtles are the oldest known group of reptiles that are still with us today.  Turtle fossils date back 200 million years.
The three- toed box turtle thrives in the Ozarks.  It is the one with the plain olive brown colored shell.  The ornate box turtle has a dark shell streaked with yellow lines. They are plentiful and for some obscure reason, about twice a year they … (0 comments)

ozarks: ANYONE WANT SOME SHELL KNOB DAFFY-DILLS? - 03/15/07 09:09 AM
Sharing the WealthLiving in Shell Knob for almost 18 years, I realize I have become accustomed to the natural beauty that surrounds us.  My eyes see it, but the excitement I once knew isn't there anymore.  Kind of like a marriage, I guess.  You are so thrilled with each other in the early years, but grow into a comfortable 'knowing' after some time passes.  That's why I enjoy sharing this knowledge with newcomers.  It reawakens that joy.  Springtime is  never ending color, sights and sounds and  I was  able to pass some on this week to a client who moved here … (2 comments)
