Every month I like to read the National Association of REALTORS® Existing Home Sales Report to see how Lawrence Yun is going to positively interpret the data being reported from all the US housing markets. Last month he blamed the weather, this month apparently the problems were due to contract cancellations. Regardless, he is still quite certain that we are in the midst of a housing recovery. Existing home sales in Tallahassee bucked the national trend in February by rising for a second consecutive month. February existing home sales were up 28% compared to February 2010, which following the 61% rise in January has made for a great start to the 2011 housing market. Yesterday, the National Association of REALTORS® released the November edition of the Existing Home Sales Report and and pointed out a positive trend for the first time in five months. Of course, any time NAR releases a report, we have to look at Lawrence Yun’s spin on what it says. As NAR chief economist, Dr. Yun is responsible for taking home sales data and making the housing market look good (not an easy job these days). I just love the 25th of the month. I wake up every 25th of the month, grab a cup of coffee, then look to see what the National Association Of REALTORS® has to report on existing-home sales across the US housing markets. Lately, meaning over the past few years, it has been an interesting game of “spin the numbers.” How can we make bad news look as good as possible. Every month on the 25th, the National Association of REALTORS® releases the Existing Home Sales Report which includes single family detached homes, condominiums, townhouses and co-ops. Of all the real estate reports that the NAR produces, this one best identifies the strength and direction of the national housing market. The April Existing Home Sales Report was positive, showing a 7.6% increase over April of the previous year.
