dogs: Animal Adoptions Throughout Southern Maryland! - 01/16/13 02:38 AM
If you have been thinking about getting a new pet, you should consider adoption. There are tons of dogs and cats that need good homes and are just waiting for someone to pick them.
Here are a few places in the area where you can adopt from:

If you aren't looking to adopt but still want to get involved, you can always donate or volunteer!
Every animal deserves a loving home so don't rule out adoption when searching for your next pet :)

dogs: Dog, Meet Bird... Bird, Meet Teeth... - 07/31/08 06:16 AM

For those who haven't met her yet, this is Brit.  She and her brother are a pair of puppies that I rescued from the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville, MD.  She tries to be a good dog, and generally speaking she succeeds.  This morning, however, was not a good morning for us.
It's my fault, really.  I taught her how to play fetch, and she's a beagle mix, so she has a natural hunting instinct.  I had assumed (incorrectly) that life in suburbia would prevent her from turning into the great white hunter.  Aside from the occasional errant squirrel, there's … (18 comments)

dogs: Holiday Weekend and Wet Dog Roundup - 05/27/08 04:31 AM
This past weekend was the first time in nearly a month that I took some time off.  Granted, it was only a day, but taking time for yourself is important, and it's nice to get away from time to time.
I spent Saturday at my parent's home in Virginia(literally, smack dab in the middle of nowhere), and enjoyed the beautiful weather and some time with the dogs.
They say happiness is a WARM puppy.  As far as my dogs are concerned, they think happiness is a WET puppy.  Perhaps my dogs made a mistake.  They could … (1 comments)

dogs: Dogs Abandoned in the Foreclosure Fallout - 02/03/08 05:13 AM
\Foreclosure Dogs are becoming big news.  Man's best friend is quickly becoming an expendable commodity to some as people are losing their homes to the credit crunch.  Regardless of what the circumstances were for the foreclosure, it's not the pet's fault, and now many of them are finding themselves facing euthanization.
The Washington Post recently ran an associated press article about the growing number of cats and dogs abandoned because of foreclosures.
The house was ravaged _ its floors ripped, walls busted and lights smashed by owners who trashed their home before a bank foreclosed on it. Hidden in the wreckage … (8 comments)

dogs: A Theory About Dogs and Real Estate... - 02/02/08 07:46 AM
As some of you may know, I'm a very big supporter of rescuing dogs from shelters, and I have 3 rescues myself.  January has been a very busy month for me (and I hope it has for you, too!), and the biggest downside to the increased business is  the decreased time I have to spend with my puppies.
I'm always amazed by how unconditional their love really is!  For the past week I've been getting home close to midnight, and my feet are ready to fall off when I walk through the door.  Without fail, all of my dogs wake up … (22 comments)

dogs: A Wandering Dog Got A BIG Surprise! - 01/06/08 10:22 AM
I admit, my house is "secluded", the dirt road leading to the gravel driveway should be enough to give that away (I hear a "you might be a redneck" joke coming on....)!  I like the idea of country living though, which is why I'm there.  You won't hear me complaining about noisy neighbors!
However, my next door neighbors are dog lovers much like myself, and they happen to have an adorable beagle mix named Bandit.  When I say "next door neighbors", I mean a walk up the hill behind my house and through the woods to get … (13 comments)

dogs: Meet Piper, a Rescued German Shelter Pup! - 12/14/07 11:43 AM
It's been a looong week..... so here's something utterly random and fuzzy, too!  Her name is Piper, and she's a rescued shelter rat!  She's a little mouthy when dinner's due, but she's a completely adorable, well mannered mutt!  C'mon, how can you not smile when you see a pup as cute as this!  Not only that, but she plays well with other dogs, so she gets to enjoy lots of trips to the dog park!
She came from the tri-county animal shelter in Hughesville, MD, and if you are interested in finding a great family pet, I highly recommend you … (16 comments)

dogs: Pound Puppies Bring Many Happy Returns - 11/28/07 05:31 PM
I am a firm believer that shelter dogs can make the best potential animal companions(nothing against cats, I just prefer animals that don't cough up hairballs) .  I'd like to share with everyone my own personal story about my mutts to illustrate how rewarding dogs can really be!  I'm sick and tired of hearing about animal abuse stories in the news(Mr. Vick, this includes you!), so let's talk about a little good news!     These two came into my life as abused leftovers that someone didn't want.  Abused, malnourished, and amazingly enough, too young to have developed a fear of … (11 comments)
