activerain: Time of Roses... - 08/18/11 03:14 PM
I have an announcement to make. For those who has been on AR long enough, it is like a public service. In 3 days it is Brad Andersohn's birthday. So, if you know who he is, then you most probably like him a lot, and then you can go to his page and tell him that.
I have a bit of nostalgia for the time when Brad was not yet even an employee of AR and not yet ActiveBrad. The time when he was writing those highly educational/useful/eye opening, practical blogs and hundreds of members flocked to them every day. What a … (18 comments)

activerain: ARant - 07/09/11 04:59 PM
The whole day the server was not working, and I could not get on AR. Of course, it is frustrating, as it seems that it really does not go anywhere. Yet it is more rare, and, I guess, we have to be grateful for that.
I am not a techie, and I do not know how to fix it. So I have to believe that it is as good as it could be. Of course, I do not know how Zillow does it, how Trulia does it, and I do not even want to mention Yahoo, or Google.
Maybe AR is bigger than … (22 comments)

activerain: Don't You Want to Know What I Think? - 06/29/11 03:42 AM
There are ways of communicating on AR. They include blogs, comments, and they include reblogs.
For some reason there are quite a number of AR members who circumcised the trio and cut out reblogging out of the communication by disabling comments. The motives maybe noble (let people go to the  original blogger and comment there) or purely practical (I am not getting points for the comments on reblogs) but in any case, they decided for me, what I have to do.
It is weird when people post something and then tell me that they do not want to hear from me. … (76 comments)

activerain: Are You Ready For Long Haul? - 06/20/11 03:04 AM
Why do agents have to blog? What is behind the urge to blog, and then to blog more, and then to blog every day? Is it something agents can't do business without?
Look around. Do you notice that the most successful top producers are not on AR, and do not blog on AR, and often do not blog, period?
I know agents so compelling, so eloquent, so analytical when you are on the phone with them, or face-to-face, that you can't help but respect and adore them, and when they try to put something in writing, it is so primitive … (30 comments)

activerain: Our Jeweler Patricia Kennedy ... - 06/19/11 08:07 AM
You did not know that Patricia Kennedy is a Jeweler? She is...
With so many blog posts coming on the dashboard, it is more and more difficult not to miss great ones, while not wasting too much time on «I do not have what to say, but gurus say I have to post every day» type.
Of course, we have featured posts, but how many of great posts do not make it there, and how many of those, that make are agenda posts, like "How To Do Something On AR"...
And here comes Patricia Kennedy with her weekly roll of posts … (11 comments)

activerain: Hi, Thief! - 06/09/11 05:10 PM
I read Peggy Hughes' blog post In a Quandary . I understand what she feels, but I did not agree with the options. She made me think, and she inspired me to blog about it...
Plagiarism is not new and we have a fair share of it on Active Rain. I remember the time when we had a flag, and it was easy to report Plagiarism among other things. In a pure AR fashion one day the flag disappeared, and now reporting feels like you have too much time on your hand as it takes longer.
I am not even talking … (31 comments)

activerain: Challenge to Challenge a Challenge - 06/04/11 11:57 AM
Have a suggestion for Active Rain. It all comes from some frustration with AR challenges. If you are an outsider and you learn about AR challenges, you would think that it is a bunch of Senior advisers to retirees, big fans of Kodak, who have plenty of money and even more time, and do not know what to do with both...
While I am dreaming of becoming part of this bunch, I am, and many others, are not in this prestigious group yet.
I am asking myself, why wouldn't AR start a Challenge to suggest a Challenge. Maybe even related to … (28 comments)

activerain: 30 Under 30... Where Are They? - 05/23/11 11:39 AM
I just got the last Realtor magazine in the mail. On the cover: 30 under 30. These are industry notables, who would be determining it in the very near future. With these 30 young people one thing is for sure: they are known in the industry. Not that I personally know them or even heard about them, but if the magazine put them into that category, it means something.
As AR avid member, I sometimes tend to think that good/smart/efficient RE agents and brokers are on AR. It is touted as the biggest professional social network, and as such, it should … (75 comments)

activerain: Why Cows Like Print Media and Realtors Don't? - 05/19/11 04:57 PM
It is interesting how much information we get from the peers. I do feel that I now have a pretty good feel about Charlotte thanks to Debe Maxwell; I am getting a close look at newspaper "reading" habits of cows (It's Dangerous to Read the Newspaper on the Farm!), and getting closer to being able to live in the country thanks to wonderful blogs by Judi Barrett; learn so much about San Diego thanks to posts and incredible photos by William Johnson; enjoyed the Alaskan blogs and photos by Jesse Clifton (a rare guest on AR these days, though); got to … (11 comments)

activerain: What Do You Know About This New Kid On The Block? - 05/12/11 05:45 PM
Greg Nino posted An Interview With Activerain CEO Nikesh Parekh (Niki) and then AR new CEO reblogs it.
I am reading the comments and feel like I am missing something here. Well, I think am missing everything.
Yes, I can understand when we are fascinated with celebrities. We want to know MORE about them. This interview surprised me, because Greg was interviewing AR CEO and we do not yet know AR new CEO as AR CEO. I thought that at this point all other details were of little interest. But I have, obviously, underestimated our curiosity.
We have rough time on AR in … (37 comments)

activerain: Thin String Of a Violin - 05/11/11 06:24 PM
Did you read this heart-wrenching post A $60,000 Eulogy for ActiveRain written by former ActiveRain CTO, VP, Product Development Jorgen Hahn? Do it. It does not matter which side you are in, or even if you have picked a side, as I haven't. It is one of those posts that get you feel the smell of cooking in someone's kitchen when the door unexpectedly was left half open, and you feel the aroma, even though you do not see the kitchen.
It is a controversial post, and for one there is no need to be written so well. Scandalous is usually … (28 comments)

activerain: Growing Pains of Cluelesness - 05/09/11 03:16 AM
I could not log in on Active Rain good part of the day yesterday. Could not comment, could not respond to comments left on my blogs, could not post, could not participate even as an anonymous customer, as many agents do not allow anonymous comments.
The problem has a long story. I have been saying that little was done for about 2 years now, and finally I hear that Active Rain is trying to figure things out. Until now they actually did not really have a clue.
I remember that «we are on top of it» statement and can only laugh. … (14 comments)

activerain: I Am In. Who Is Next? - 05/04/11 08:24 PM
There is a celebration coming and Seattle will be hosting it. I am sure it would be interesting, but it is far from me and many others. Of course, it is always a problem for half of us. What is home to half of us, is far for the other half. Isn't it one of the nice problems of being a national and even international network?
I want to suggest a different way of celebrating. Why don't we, Active Rainers, get together and book a whole cruise ship and go on a cruise. Seriously. I saw an unbeatable offer today for Royal … (136 comments)

activerain: Keeping Pants On... - 05/02/11 05:46 PM
I posted Why Did Pheidippides Die? And received some excellent comments. Some came from the readers of Russel Ray's Is it okay to jump in and either sink or swim?  He was kind to put a link to my blog even though he did not fully agreed with it, or partially disagreed (LOL). It was about this 31 day of  May Challenge 2011, and I was torn between the obvious quantitative approach (if I can scientifically call this the production of a lot of crap rewarded by a lot of points).
Practically everyone amicably disagreed with me, and I am fine with it. … (15 comments)

I had mixed feelings when I read Christina Oneal's blog post 31 Day Challenge for May 2011 ~ earn 3,000 BONUS points
I remember December challenge. There were tons of blogs about nothing with the only goal to submit a post a day. People literally were saying that they have nothing to say, but they had to say something, so they were saying that they had nothing to say, only to be counted in the race.
I wrote about it and got comments that December is usually a month when people tend to be distracted with all the Holidays, and this … (41 comments)

activerain: Guys, I Need Your Expert Opinion. Help Me Out Here - 04/15/11 07:55 AM
This post is about picking (or changing) the name of the company. So many of us face it at least once, when we go independent and are forming the company. How do you pick the best name for your company. What elements are a must? How specific it should be? I am about doing just that and I am lost.
We are revamping some of our internet marketing. As part of it, we are shifting to a new domain: MyDaytonaCondo.com. This will be our main, with pages for those condos that we will be covering. Here's the sample of one page  www.daytonacondos-marinagrande.com. It … (28 comments)

activerain: The Magic of ActiveRain. A True Story - 04/10/11 08:05 AM
I have been on AR for quite some time, and have sent links to some of my blogs to customers numerous times. I would usually receive an e-mail thanking me for the links, they would comment in the e-mail but they never commented on the blogs.
Imagine my surprise when I received this comment on my Catching The Sun blog:
Dear Jon
Thanks for helping us to buy our 2nd home in Daytona Beach Shores, You and your family are wonderful people. You are honest , smart and never too pushy. Also thanks for putting the sunset and sunrise pictures, … (68 comments)

activerain: Suicide in slow motion - 04/02/11 06:13 PM
Looking at the evening blog roll and ran into Michael Thornton's Into ActiveRain, Some Life Must Fall…, then Cindy «in Indy» Marchant-Fishers' OMG...I'm having withdrawal systems AR!
It is about another snafu, the «Service Unavailable», and the frustration of members. There is a side which is touching. Many of us do not even understand the level of attachment until we are faced with inability to post, or to comment, or to even log in.
Usually optimistic members then say that it is fine now and they hope it will be fine from now as the problem has been fixed.
Nope, problems … (26 comments)

activerain: How do we comment... - 03/23/11 06:22 PM
I read a blog post today, and I thought that it is very important to understand how the way the comments were handled may affect the very goal of the blog post.
We, bloggers, are longing for attention. We write so that people read and comment. We swing the door wide open and invite the peers or the public...
So what happens when the comment is not in agreement with you? First reaction: ouch. How dare s/he? But if you did not disable comments, they sure dare...
I feel strongly against both disabling comments and deleting them. If you disabled comments, … (47 comments)

activerain: The Challenge That Took So Long - 03/13/11 04:27 PM
Press Release challenge on AR was something new, I never did it before, so curiousity got the best of me. But my timing was terrible.
I am so late with this press release. First it was vacation, and I thought that I would come back and put it together, then hospitalization, and everything became slow and difficult...
Meanwhile my hero, knowing nothing about all this, is moving ahead with force... She added 10,000 points to her impressive 800,000 since then...
But time is just time. It did not change anything in the greater scheme of things, so here it goes:
