blogging: If I Have Wings, Should I Fly Or Not? - 05/31/14 02:28 AM
What to do if you have wings? That’s easy. If you have wings, then fly… But first try to wake up.
Actually, the question I often see on AR is not what to do with the wings, but what to do with the writer’s block. The answer is easy. Wake up, remind yourself that you are not a professional writer, calm down and go back to sleep. You do not have to do anything about the condition, which you do not have.
- Yeah, but I am sitting at the computer and do not know what to write about.
So … (52 comments)

blogging: Racing Horses of Blogging... - 12/02/13 02:05 PM
Cathy Streib posted This Daily Blogging-Here We Go Again! It's All About CRAPP! It is a good and clever post about HOW to handle posting on daily basis. This is not about HOW but rather about Why.
Why post every day? What is the benefit of posting every day? I believe that posting every day, every other day, or at any other regular or irregular intervals is irrelevant, as regularity is not the virtue of blogging. We should not confuse it with menstrual cycle, where regularity is meaningful… I believe we need to start with “Why are we blogging?” I do … (26 comments)

blogging: I Am Semi-Retiring From AR - 06/27/12 11:18 PM
It is funny but I did not have time to announce my semi-retirement from AR for more than a week now. Yep, it is time to stop the race and get practical. At 10 posts per week and 10 comments a day and considering the time I was devoting to doing this, it was eating me alive. I could try doing it faster, but it would come at the expense of quality. I perfectly understand that quality is very relative thing, and even with all the time I was devoting to writing, the quality was often borderline. What this race taught … (28 comments)

blogging: My Fierce Competitor... Congratulations! - 03/11/12 03:08 PM
If you go to Leaderboard in Florida, you will see that my fierce competitor is Gabe Sanders from Stuart, Florida.
Interestingly, there is something in common between us besides being older males.
We are both Jewish (even though I am not religious), and we are both immigrants, who came from Eastern Europe. He – from Hungary. I – from the Soviet Union.
Of the two, he is much smarter, because he came in 1956, and it took me way too long to get out of the Soviet Union. So, Gabe in America realized his American dream, while I in America realized … (18 comments)

blogging: Habits of Successful Bloggers - 03/08/12 10:58 PM
Life is not as fair as we might want it to be. There are many bloggers on AR. Some are more successful and some are not so much. Time from time I run into ... not very successful bloggers complaining that they do not see the expected results from their blogging.
Often times when I go and check the profile of the member complaining, it is incomplete. It is not that it is short, it is that you see that the member did not take time to complete all the boxes in Profile page, and did not delete the prompt text there, so after … (16 comments)

blogging: Video Blogging ... New Fancy-Shmancy? - 03/06/12 09:19 AM
Video blogs on AR. Do you really follow them?
I usually don't. For me it is often such a waste of time...
I would only click if this is someone I know and expect to be captivating/entertaining, or something so short, that it would not eat a lot of my time.
I ran into a video blog by Matthias Allred What is a credit report and what are the credit scores that are available to me?
I watched a few of his blogs before as well, and. Actually, Matthias does a good job. It is a well narrated video, good … (14 comments)

blogging: How To Successfully Write For Google - 03/04/12 01:34 PM
How To Successfully Write For Google I was reading Andrea Swiedler’s  blog post It's all a matter of taste and style... style and taste... I like Andrea's blogs. i like that she is not a marketing machine, even when she claims she is. And usually I agree with her. She wrote about the art of writing good blogs, and she said: “And then you must be sure you write for Google too, don't forget that. If you don't write for Google, the chances of anyone finding you are slim to none.” This shows the importance of writing for Google. So, how … (10 comments)

blogging: You Want My Opinion But Will Not Hire Me? - 02/15/12 02:48 PM

I received a comment on one of my “old” blogs.
- Jon,
Can you give an update on the status of Ocean Jewels condos, now?  We're looking at purchasing one of their units.
Thanks!
I understand that Monty Googled Ocean Jewels and saw my 2010 blog post. As we know from the comment, Monty is interested in what I can say about Ocean Jewels, as he is considering buying a unit there.
This is by far not the only request of this type that I receive, often daily. If I try to write updated blogs in response, it would take … (50 comments)

blogging: Stole It? Sorry, You Are Protected - 02/12/12 06:03 PM
Well, the sight of 10 blog posts coming in rapid-fire manner right after the hand of the clock moves past midnight to Monday is not surprising.
The fact that that these posts are plagiarized is not surprising. Rapid-fire is a good warning sign… usually  wasted. The “author” is not Russel Ray, so he can do whatever he wants… even write War and Peace…
The fact that AR is resisting to either return to the flag system, which made it easier to report problems with blogs (not with comments), or offer something not much worse, is not surprising, of better say, no … (20 comments)

blogging: Folks, It Ain't a Phone, It Is a Banana... - 02/12/12 04:00 PM
Very often I would blog about something and get surprised that there is comment coming the very moment I click submit.

Often times, however, I notice that the comment is not to the blog post, but to the Title, and has little or no relevance.
We are all in a constant rush, and blogging is the activity, where we are not to read, enjoy, but rather grasp and move. It is an exercise in speed in the first place.
No question we lose something. It is a different quality of communication. We are more concerned with the process, than the … (18 comments)

blogging: Good Wine Has To Age to Be Appreciated - 02/05/12 05:03 PM
This is not a rant. This is just an observation. This is something that everyone has to overcome here on AR.
When you join and start blogging, you have great ideas, you write entertainingly, there is substance and there is form… and there are few or no readers…
So freaking frustrating…
You write a post, and get a couple of comments, and then you read another post about the same issue, and it has 30-40 comments, or it is featured, and the comments are in hundreds. And it is no better than yours, or worse…
And nobody talks to you…

blogging: My Old AR Friends - 01/29/12 03:50 PM
Suzanne McLaughlin posted I Said Goodbye Today to a Lot of Old Friends.... Excellent blog. She made me think about those who I subscribed to in my time on AR.She inspired me to write this blog post. I have less than half of Suzanne’s number of members, who I subscribed to. When I go to AR, I am looking at dashboard first and comment on blogs that caught my attention. When the dashboard is just listings and market reports, then I turn to my subscription list and read and comment on the posts.
And yes, on my list the "oldest" post … (24 comments)

blogging: Are We Neighborhood Resource? - 01/29/12 03:14 PM
Are we really a neighborhood resource? Do people go to Active rain to find out the move schedule, or the local Laundromat’s hours of operation? Or the menu of the nearby cafe?
What I often see is that these blogs are not even incorporated in a bigger picture. For example, I could understand a blog about the neighborhood and within the blog references to the establishments there.
But a blog, which only has the movie shows schedule?
Do you go to Active Rain when you search for this information, or you are like me and you just Google it? Or … (4 comments)

blogging: Knock, Knock, Knock... - Who Is This? - Open The Door. This is Internet - 01/22/12 03:45 AM
Gary Coles posted Get Connected in the Rain It is an interesting post about Active Rain. But what surprised me was that Gary transitions from Active Rain connections to telephone conversations, and for him it is still within Active Rain, and it is not so for me.
To an extent I am surprised that we never really embraced the medium – Internet the way it is designed. Internet is the connection. It is not a step to go to another medium – phone. It is its own world with its own rules. Seeing it as a bridge to a physical personal … (13 comments)

blogging: How To … - 01/07/12 02:28 PM
I often run into blogs with titles starting with “How to…”. I must admit that AR proved to be an excellent resource. Just remember posts by Brad Andersohn, Katerina Gasset, Craig Daniels and so many others.
Along with those, there are blogs with “How to…” in the title, but when you click, all you get is just general BS about planning what you are going to do, buying the right stuff, using only the right ingredients, and hire professionals.
But not what they claim in the title. So, if the title is “How to paint a house”, do not expect … (18 comments)

blogging: RealEstate.com Gold Rush - 12/09/11 02:13 PM
There is a lot of buzz on AR about RealEstate.com. The guys are actively selling the ownership of a whole city. Sounds enticing.
So, I am on RealEstate.com.
I type “Daytona Beach”. Then in property type I pick “Condo/ Townhouse”
18 results. 5 of those are condo-hotels, which is a very different animal.
4 are not in Daytona Beach, but in Daytona Beach Shores, and 1 in South Daytona, which is clearly stated in the address.
So far we have 8 out of 18, which are actually in Daytona Beach, and are condos/townhouses.
Daytona MLS shows 225 condos/townhouses in Daytona Beach … (16 comments)

blogging: What Is The Language Of Your Business? - 12/07/11 09:38 AM
Two Russians on Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. The car stops and the driver asks for directions. Two Russians do not speak English, so frustrated driver leaves.
One Russian to another:
- Everybody say «English... English, you need to learn English...»... Did his perfect English help him?
I read a featured blog today, and remembered this story.
What is the language of our business? Do the parties speak the same business language?
The post is about the lockboxes, and the author's refusal to give the code to an investor, who was standing outside and wanted to see the property right away.
The … (8 comments)

blogging: Joystick For AR - 11/28/11 03:57 PM
Why Are You So Frustrated With Me?
I posted about Featured Posts on AR, and some of the comments felt like people are frustrated that I spend so much time on it. It also happened with my some other posts. Whoever is frustrated, have all the right to feel this way, but if this is true, then they are wasting their time on commenting… It is simple arithmetic: if what I write is waste zero, then what you comment is waste zero…
I am also puzzled by the notion that there is the one and only way to spend time. For my … (21 comments)

blogging: Want To Be A Millionaire? Be It... It Is Easy - 11/27/11 04:35 PM
Time flies.
It was not long ago that AR got its first millionaire (in AR points), and now we already have 20 members with more than 1,000,000 points. And the Olympus is going to be even more crowded in few months as there are 16 members with over 900,000 points, who are tirelessly climbing the steep slopes of AR Olympus.
Like in general economy, there are some signs of inflation, brought by incessant shower of challenges points, and by valuing logging in same as 4 bona fide comments.
But this is not the general economy, and those 20 are not … (32 comments)

blogging: How Posts Are Featured? Would You Change The System? - 11/27/11 01:38 PM
How Posts Are Featured?
Does anyone know what are the criteria, when choosing posts for feature on AR?
Does even AR know it? I really doubt it….
I practice reading featured posts time from time, and the idea behind it seems way more complicated than Google algorithm.
At least with Google you can figure what you need to do to be on page one, and there are some rules that we can understand, and follow.
With featured posts on AR it is impossible. There is no rhythm or reason. I guess, there are a few gals/guys, who would be featured no matter … (46 comments)
