daytona beach: More about DOJ-NAR Settlemetnt - 06/19/08 05:59 PM
In may we got the news that after years of spending a lot of taxpayers money, Department of Justice settled with National Association of Realtors the case of how the Listing information is displayed on the Internet.
It is called a Settlement, but there is not guilt accepted, no money, so this is a very strange settlement. After years of arguing DOJ did not really got far.
Looks like what they agreed on may not be really important, as VOW business model is unlikely to become very popular. Of course, nobody can predict what may arise from it in the future, … (1 comments)

daytona beach: What The Heck Is Wrong With Us? - 06/16/08 06:25 PM
The title got my attention (Are Short Sales worth the headaches? by Drew Burks) and I clicked in. There are many posts about Short sales and frustrations, and even the calls to ban them altogether.
But the I stumbled into the statement that literally shocked me. I left a frustrated comment and tried to move on. I couldn't. I did not get it out of my system, it keeps burning inside.
Here's the paragraph: "I have met 3-4 listing agents who have dozens possibly even hundreds of short sale listings and thankfully they were honest with me, telling me "we have no intentions of submitting the … (44 comments)

daytona beach: Are These Just 200-Point Fakes? - 06/14/08 05:52 PM
I have to admit that I always expect that the post I read and comment on would generate comments, and the flow of comments may become very interesting and some of the best post I read on AR were great because of them.
After commenting on a blog I would usually come later to see if there is progress, and whether there are interesting comments. Sometimes people comment more than once, as there is a genuine discussion, often unpredictable, and this makes it interesting.
What surprises me often, however, is that I come back to the post, and there are a few … (48 comments)

daytona beach: Pet Lovers Did Not Win The House...And Did Not Loose Anything... - 06/12/08 05:57 PM
On April 11 I posted a blog The Best FSBO in the Nation? It was about a real estate marketing idea by a person, who is not a Realtor. The author of the idea - Clementina Marie Giovannetti - offered her Ocala Mansion for ... the best pet lover story of 300 words or less plus a $200 entry fee. So, if you win, you owe a $1,250,000 (according to the owner) mansion on a very large lot with mature vegetation free and clear in this beautiful part of quaint Ocala.
The rules were quite elaborate, but the idea behind was pretty simple. Ms. Giovannetti would … (12 comments)

daytona beach: Hawaiian Inn. Condo-Hotel Market Snapshot - 06/09/08 02:24 PM
Hawaiian Inn
2301 South Atlantic Ave, Daytona Beach Shores.
This just over 200 room resort was built in 1965. Outdoor corridor system. Even thought the association was trying to keep up with the maintenance, the age takes its toll. Last year over 2 months the property could not take rentals because of the construction and maintenance issues. In January the resort was closed for rentals for a bit over 2 weeks.
As a result, the management company terminated their contract. The new management company is in place and is up and running.
The resort is one of the most popular family … (2 comments)

daytona beach: Harbour Beach Resort. Condo-hotel Market Snapshot - 06/09/08 07:07 AM
Harbour Beach Resort, 701 South Atlantic Ave, Daytona Beach, FL 32118
Built in 1975, the Resort had seen better days. Until 5 years ago we considered it a nicer property and liked to bring our customers there. Then the property started slowly deteriorating, management and maintenance going down the hill.
They did not have luck with the management company, three companies within the last 4 years made a big dent in trust between the onwers and the management. The Board failed to set the goals to preserve the and increase the rentals. It is just mind boggling what can people do … (0 comments)

daytona beach: NAR Settles With DOJ. Now What? - 05/27/08 05:39 PM
The latest news is that NAR settled with DOJ  (http://www.realtor.org/RMODaily.nsf/pages/News2008052701?OpenDocument)
NAR claims it a victory. Yes, no money to be paid, no wrongdoing to accept.
A lot of brokers would not consider this a win. We are dreaming of the green pastures of the past. The past where we had the exclusive access to the information. Whether you consider this a victory or loss, this is history. Three years to decide how the information is presented on VOW sites, another 90 days to implement, and then what?
After VOW were dead for 3 years, the settlement would allow to perform CPR to revive what has since lost … (8 comments)

daytona beach: My Good Boy, My Grandson - 05/26/08 05:31 PM
New Page 7 Two weeks after we came to the US from the Soviet Union, my daughter learned that she was pregnant. She brought this news to our hotel room without an AC in 104 F July heat of summer 1991. No money, no food, no English (except for me), no idea what to do and what is ahead. NYANA (New York Association for New Americans) asked her what she wanted to do, and told her that they could help with abortion if she chooses to go that route.
Recently Daniel celebrated his 16th birthday.
He is a good … (12 comments)

daytona beach: 20 Year Ago Today. Worlds apart - 05/25/08 04:17 PM
It was 20 years ago today. I worked as a military instructor at a local high school. This was mandatory for boys in 9th and 10th grade. 2 hours in class a week, and after the first year at the end of May 10 days of field training with living in the camp (all kids of the school district participated and we used to occupy a school building). This was not a joke. Boys learned AK-47 and could take it apart in half a minute with their eyes closed, they shoot AK-47, learned grenades, dug trenches, knew how to detect and … (15 comments)

daytona beach: Bigger Than His Own Mind - 05/23/08 06:09 PM
On Fox News on Hannity and Colmes tonight one of the guests was Jesse Ventura, former Navy Seal, former professional wrestler and former Governor of Minnesota.
Has 3 years of active duty behind his belt. Big guy, looks very impressive...
Hannity asked him about his conspiracy theories regarding September 11, he started answering and it was painfully pathetic. It was embarrassing...
I do not understand why people like the conspiracy ideas so much. Is it that these people want it to be something even more sinister than it was?
Thousands died, this was more than any movie, and coming with these ridiculous ideas does not … (20 comments)

daytona beach: International Speedway Corp and Cordish are Ready to Rock in Daytona Beach - 04/18/08 04:54 PM

71-acres across from the Daytona International Speedway will include offices, a hotel, restaurants, retail and mutli-family residences.
The plat approval aloows the Developers to do the project in phases. The first phase is the office buildings and the second is mixed-use, with mostly retail component.

The plans call for 220,000 sf of retail space with nightclubs and restaurants; … (0 comments)

daytona beach: Money Winning Over Heart - 04/04/08 03:37 PM
Daytona is embracing a possible loss of its newspaper, at least the way they had it for so many years. News-journal is one of the last newspapers where the majority stakes belongs to the Davidson family for 79 years.
The legal battle started in 2004, when Cox Communications from Atlanta, which owns 47.5% shares in the company, filed a lawsuit against the News-Journal paying $13 million for naming rights of the News-Journal Center, a performing arts center in Downtown Daytona Beach. Attorneys claimed that the Davidson-controlled company misused corporate money "while pursuing the Davidson family's personal interest in the arts" (Cox asks court for independent News-Journal overseer.)

daytona beach: If I Were an Adviser to the President, What Would I Suggest - 02/14/08 03:51 PM
We all imagined ourselves being a President. We know what to do, the goals are clear and we have both the power and the will to steer the right course. Getting older brings some bitter understanding that things are more complicated than we think, and that being a President may be not that much fun (maybe except for Bill Clinton).
However, when the Army stopped short of taking Saddam out in 1991 Iraq War, I thought it was a dire mistake. I thought America needed to finish what was so successfully started (at that time I was still in Russia). Well, things are more complicated … (30 comments)

daytona beach: Russian Lottery. My way of dealing with a declining market - 01/29/08 12:28 PM
I can't complain, I have already won the highest prized lottery when I managed to get to US.
This was not my first winning jackpot. When I was a 19-y.o. college student, it happened that in a local movie theatre I ended sitting between Olgas on each side and one behind. Somebody told me that something good will happen, and it did. I married one of them (she is behind me). There is a believe in Russia that if you get with three Olgas, you better make a wish.
I guess one of the reasons was that Olga is not the most popular name in … (15 comments)

daytona beach: My MeMe. I could not avoid it, but you can. Just skip it. - 01/27/08 06:26 PM
I was MeMed by Mark Horan. I guess it is like a flue: you get it, you have to pass it on. I also noticed that some people got it several times, This is scary, like any epidemics, so I hope to handle it only once. With a growing number of members there is a hope that is achievable.
So, here it goes. I have read masterpieces. This is not one. Just bits and pieces of one life.
I never had grandparents. The family consisted of my mom and my older brother. My grandparents from my mom's side lived in the Ukraine in Malin, a small town near … (22 comments)

daytona beach: Daytona Beach Colleges change names - 12/30/07 03:24 PM
Good new for Daytona Beach.
Daytona Beach Community College has earned the accreditation to offer a 4-year Bachelor of Applied Science degrees. This transformed the formally "two year" community college and made it a four year school.
Local newspaper today reported that it now offers bachelor and Master's. I di not find any Master's so far, but we will see. If you go to the College website http://www.dbcc.edu/, you will not find a word about the change (at least I did not succeed). The only difference is the name change so far, even though a lot of pages still have old DBCC on them.
Nothing is changing overnight, let's … (0 comments)

daytona beach: Daytona won another victory. So sad... - 12/27/07 03:13 PM
I read today's newspaper. The concerned residents again forced the developer to downsize. Another victory. The developer was forced to go from 30 stories, then 22, then 20, now 16. Now developer is saying it is not really making big business sense.
And it is very said.
We are hostages of redneck mentality. We are hijacked. Being against is so easy. I am not surprised that people with that mentality would be fighting for preserving "the beauty". They gotta be day dreaming. The real beauty here is created by G-d, and it is, unfortunately, not complemented by what people have created.
If everything would … (4 comments)

daytona beach: Marina Grande on the Halifax. Market Snapshot - 11/22/07 09:05 AM
Marina Grande on Halifax in Holly Hill is half built. Two 25-story towers out of 4 have been built. They have not yet been any closings, the developer is working on finishing touches.
The project came at difficult time with the slowing market, causing delays in completing the project and a lot of troubles for the those who signed preconstruction at the height of the market. Therefore there are a lot of units put under contract by speculators. The time of closing comes close and a lot of them may face the losing their deposit, as many of them can't or … (0 comments)
