jon zolsky: Voting In Different Worlds - 11/01/08 04:39 PM
Today was the last day of Early Voting, and we decided to try to cast out vote earlier, so that we would not be worrying about it on November 4, and we also expect much longer lines on November 4. The voting is form 7 AM to 7 PM. i was working in the office, and my wife picked me a bit too late, and we showed up at the City Island Library - the early voting place - at 6:40 PM. There was a long line, but we were told that it was moving fast, so we joined the voting … (6 comments)

jon zolsky: Mount Dora Craft Show - 10/31/08 06:19 PM
Tina Allen from Mount Dora reminded me of the coming festival in Active Rain Withdrawals? I have visited the Show twice before, and she reminded me just in time for us to make plans for the coming weekend.
I also wanted to try to make a live contact with a fellow Rainer, and I was curious to meet Tina's daughter Tiffany, who at 12 is an aspiring entrepreneur, making cookie mixes and selling them on the Internet. I liked Tiffany's site, it has a warm feel, I am sure people like it.
Tina told me where to find them at Daisy a Day flower … (8 comments)

jon zolsky: Daytona Beach Shores. Streetscape Beautification Project - 10/25/08 04:07 PM
I live in Ponce Inlet, which is the southernmost tip of the Peninsula, and go to our office in the heart of Daytona Beach, and on 9.5-mile stretch between these two points is Daytona Beach Shores - the city with the logest shore line of all 7 municipalites comprising the Daytona Beach area.
For quite some time already there is a crew working on the sidewalks and right in the middle of the road. This is part of the $30 Million streetscape beautification project that affects 1 mile from Dunlawton Ave and Van Ave.
The project includes replacement of more than 300 light … (6 comments)

jon zolsky: My Friend, Florida Tomato and Art - 10/24/08 12:54 PM

Some time ago I wrote a blog Meeting a Russian Artist. Right Here in Port Orange  about a fascinating guy, who is an artist. Well, a real artist.
He has graduated from a college of fine arts, and then got his Masters from a prestigious Russian art school in St. Petersburg, Russia.
He's been a Port Orange resident for several years now, absolutely legal (so all my AR friends can sleep tonight -LOL).
I took the top photo, but I did not have a nice head shot, so I called Yuri and asked that sends me one. He sent two and … (6 comments)

jon zolsky: Buyers Market. What Do You Eat It With? - 10/21/08 05:42 PM
We all tend to agree that this is the Buyer's Market. However, we also tend to agree that the Buyers are actually doing everything else, including such an unpleasant activity as sitting on the fence.
So, if this is the Buyer's Market, why are they not buying? Don't you think that there is something wrong with it? Maybe not.
Though I am not offering the magic trick to change the status quo, I suggest that we look at the semantics here. I think we need to define it the way it is, which is:
Sellers Market is when there is the … (13 comments)

jon zolsky: Biketoberfest... Gorgeous Bikes and Sexy Women - 10/19/08 08:00 PM
Biketoberfest is over today. Tomorrow the city will feel deserted and smaller groups of bikers, who stayed extra day or two, will remind us of this event.
I am always impressed by this show of the bikes, nikel and chrome, spotless and shining like a freshly mint quarter.
Hotels, emptied by the noisy crowd, will take a few days to clean and get ready for occasional visitor. This is a very strange time, the weather finally has mercy on us from the heat and humidity of Florida summers, the water is warm and inviting and... it is deserted.
I remember on the … (4 comments)

jon zolsky: Why Am I In Florida - 10/19/08 06:20 AM
It is a sunny, very windyand cool day in Daytona Beach. Feels like cold front is here. We are not even hitting 80F, and this is the first time since late Spring. Ocean is still warm, warmer than the air, but it is too choppy. 2 last days I keep the windows open at night, and we turned off the air conditioner.
Daytona Beach andsurrounding areas are filled with the sound of Harleys, better say thousands of Harleys, as this is the last day of Biketoberfest. People enjoy the weather, all the fun of this terrific event, music, food, showing off … (20 comments)

jon zolsky: Baby Turtles, Welcome To The World - 10/18/08 03:20 PM

Remember my July post about the Lady Turtle laying eggs on Ponce Inlet Beach in July caught on photo camera by my grandson?
My grandson called Turtle Patrol, a volunteer organization watching turtle nests, and "adopted" this nest. His little brother Shane and their mom adopted 2 more nests on our quiet Ponce Inlet beach.
Now, 70 days later, they received a call from the Turtle Patrol, that they were going to open the nest as the turtles already hatched. They invited us to come and watch.
We gathered on the beach at 6:30. Bob Shaw, a volunteer from the Turtle Patrol, told us about … (2 comments)

jon zolsky: Busting a Myth Or Is This Christmas Already? - 10/16/08 06:42 PM
Have you noticed lately that buyers start expecting that greedy developers, who "learned" their lesson, would now get real and start building luxury condos and homes at discounted realistic prices?
Buyers believe that those greedy developers would have no choice but to rush building new condos on the ocean and sell them at, what they call "realistic" prices.
I love the term "realistic"prices so why don't we together try to calculate a "realistic price" for a condo in Daytona Beach area. Like many of you, I am not a developer and do not know all the costs to a penny, so we may come a … (2 comments)

jon zolsky: Is Patience a Virtue... Or Just Missed Opportunity? - 10/15/08 05:35 AM
I was watching TV the other day, and Geraldo had Mort Zuccerman and Mark Cuban in the studio. They were talking about economy, and I was surprised by what Mark Cuban said.
It was about the economy and something about the notion that if you have stocks, you have to weather bad times and they would come back. Mark was asked what his advice would be for people out there. He suggested that they sell the stocks and put money in CDs at 3.5% and be happy. He insisted that it did not matter whether you lose, and whether you lose a lot. … (52 comments)

jon zolsky: What the Heck's Wrong With My Remote? - 09/28/08 04:50 PM
Fernando Herboso  in a comment to my post To Real Estate or Not to Real Estate wrote "One thing for sure.. most people have 3 seconds to give you. . .long blog. . long wait".
I certainly agree that brevity is important. I am not sure, however, that it is a good idea to apply this 3 sec rule to our life.
I am not ready to limit my friendships to 3 seconds even in the era of twitter or whatever is there. I am not happy to narrow myself to fast food only... Would you really enjoy a 3 second sex? To what … (11 comments)

jon zolsky: You Gotta Be Kidding Me or Mike Tyson for President - 09/28/08 08:51 AM
First Presidential debate left an uneasy feeling. Both candidates performed very well, nobody really stumbled, no big surprises. Analysts dissected every phrase and every statement. Republican analysts said McCain did better, democratic candidates claimed that senator Obama did better.
I firmly believe that this is a great country, and it deserves great President, and so far (since we came here in 1991, but, please, do not blame it on us) we had at best good, but not great Presidents.
I do not blame either Obama or McCain for the circus of the debate, which we, as the nation instilled upon them. Do you really … (8 comments)

jon zolsky: Why Do We Love Idiots So Much? - 09/27/08 07:13 AM
I was wathching TV the other day about this Great Bailout, and was stunned by a definition, that there are Innovators, Imitators and Idiots.
How darn right!
Innovators are those who follow the basic rule of Real Estate "buy when the prices are low, hold to it, and sell when everybody is buying" attributed to John Paul Getty. Innovators base their decisions strictly on the values, and are not swayed by presidential elections or the media.
Time to buy is when price is low. They know that the market will warm up and then even get hot. Innovators make the most money.
Imitators … (7 comments)

jon zolsky: A Few Street Smarts Of Investing - 09/24/08 02:31 PM
When the market was going up at an accelerated pace, according to the study, Naples, Fla., topped the list, with homes 84% overvalued. The study also pointed out undervalued real estate markets like College Station, Texas, where prices were 23% below what the data suggested they should have been. Charleston, S.C., undervalued by 7%; Charlotte, 6%; Huntsville, Ala., 11%; and Lafayette, Ind., 10%...
What does it tell us? Is there any practical advice that I can use as investor? Well, no. Even if you want to follow the theory and rush to College Station, TX, and buy a house there for … (4 comments)

jon zolsky: To Real Estate or Not to Real Estate - 09/23/08 07:09 AM
I have run into Aaron Auxier's post How to lower your chances of getting a new real estate client by 50 percent when blogging.
This is a well written post, in strong terms showing us how we can ruin our chances of opening the gates to Paradise. Do not do this or you lose 50% and do not do that or you lose 20%... Educate the Buyers about real estate...
This is not the first time we hear that this is a real estate site, and we are limited strictly to real estate. Educating consumers about real estate is not what we … (57 comments)

jon zolsky: Inna, Say Hello To Chukcha - 09/13/08 05:47 PM
Inna Hardison has written a beautiful post, or better say that she beautifully wrote about something that I disagree. I have to acknowledge that she writes so well, that there is always a danger that the skill overshadows the topic. It becomes a form of the art, and I think this is what we have in this situation.
The post is a masterpiece as long as you read it as fiction. Putting Putin and Sarah together is catchy. But in "Political Science Fiction" any name resemblance is a pure coincidence. And, of course, unintentional. It could be Joseph Stalin, Hitler, Henry the VIII, or Saddam … (16 comments)

jon zolsky: Caylee Anthony. Whose Rights are Protected? - 09/07/08 06:14 PM
I accompanied my client and friend to the annual Hotel and Restaurant Show in Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. He is planning to open a restaurant, and new ideas, and the expo was a big help.
After the day of workshops and hours on the Expo floor, we are on our way back. We stop at a new restaurant to look at the design, and in the lobby there is an 8 by 11.5 black and white photo of Kailey Anthony.
We have seen this face so many times on TV, and here it was right here on the shelf, … (12 comments)

jon zolsky: Has Someone Already Died? - 09/04/08 02:00 PM
I am listening to those, who voice concerns with Sarah Palin's young age (at 44 still young?) and inexperience, and that if somethhing happens to McCain due to his age, she would become the President, and this scares a lot of people.
I am looking at young (sort of) presidential candidate Barak Obama with also very questionable experience.
So, if she becomes a Vice President, and if McCain dies, she would then become an inexperienced president. Well, if Barak Obama is going to become an inexperienced President, does it mean that someone has already died?Jon Zolsky, your Daytona Beach connection

jon zolsky: Mr. Gorbachev, Stop Making Things Up. - 08/17/08 09:20 AM
The last General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union's first President Mikhail Gorbachev wrote an article about the conflict in Georgia for a Russian newspaper.
"Georgian Armed Forces were trained by hundreds of US instructors, and its sophisticated military equipment was bought in a number of countries. This, coupled with the promise of NATO membership, emboldened Georgian leadership into thinking that they could get away with a "blitzkrieg" in South Ossetia".
It is not a surprise that for Gorbachev it is Georgia to blame. Well, the politician like Gorbachev should know what he is … (5 comments)
