water heaters: A Good Use For A Good Book - 01/04/11 12:53 AM
Everyone enjoys reading a good book. The thing is what to do with a book after your finished reading it. If you truly enjoyed reading it you probably want to pass it on to a friend or maybe keep it to read again someday. The trouble with holding onto books is they accumulate needing more and more of your space. Recycling or donating books is a great alternative to storing your tons of tomes. Or you could find new and creative uses for your old books like this inventive homeowner has done.
Have an old water heater you no longer use? … (13 comments)

water heaters: I Should Have Listened - 08/08/09 12:05 AM
That's the words I heard the other day from a friend of mine. I went to over his house the other night to hang out. When I arrived he says to me "you're not going to believe this, I think my water heaters leaking."
This was somewhat a little more significant than usual because he is in the process of getting ready to sell his house. Talk about bad timing.
I said "let's go take a look at it and see what's wrong."
I was hoping it was a dripping TPR valve a quick, cheap and easy fix. It wasn't, the … (26 comments)

water heaters: What Do You Find on Dogs, Priests and Water Heaters? - 07/22/09 12:35 AM
Seems like an incongruous list, but all do have something in common; collars. As you would suspect the topic is collars for water heaters not dogs or priests. Actually the collar in question is for the flue pipe of the water heater or combustion appliance.
Flue pipes are for safely transporting the products of combustion to the exterior. The gases they carry are hot. To get the pipe to the exterior it will often have to be sent through a wall or ceiling. When the pipe is passed through a wall or ceiling a collar is installed to insulate the wall … (19 comments)

water heaters: The Case of the Missing Peg Leg - 07/05/09 11:10 PM
Every pirate movie ever made has a peg legged member of the scallywag crew. And who could forget Captain Ahab who lost his leg to the great white whale Moby Dick. Argh.
Yes sir the peg leg has been around a long time and has served its purpose well. Actually the peg leg is still around today in another duty.  Not as a limb replacement for obsessed whale hunting seamen, but as an important part of gas piping.
Natural gas or propane is referred to often as the clean fuel and for the most part that is essentially true. When feeding … (7 comments)

water heaters: Making the Wrong Connection - 07/01/09 11:04 PM
Have you ever made the wrong connection? You were putting something together and it didn't go together quite right. Dads know all about that at Christmas.
When a contractor or a licensed professional makes connections they should be made right, period. No extra or mystery pieces left over when the job is done. Everything in its place.
When non-professionals tackle a job some times wrong connections are made. These bad connections usually occur out of a lack of knowledge or laziness or both.
Take for instance this pretty yellow gas pipe with its nice matching new yellow valve. Looks sweet, don't … (13 comments)

water heaters: Forgetting to Shower - 06/27/09 11:14 PM
Now who would "forget" to shower. It's just silly to think anyone could just forget. No question someone would surely remind you after a few days once you got your funk on.
Cleaning your oil furnace and or water heater is no different. If you forget it will let you know after a while. No it won't become stinky; it will start to act temperamental. Shutting off secretly in the middle of the night and when you wake up in the morning, no heat!
The water heater will play the same nasty tricks on you. When you go into take your … (13 comments)
