Don't miss the April 15th deadline to file for
your Kootenai County Homeowners Property Tax Exemption!
 
It's that time of year again when we remind our clients who purchased a home in the past year to make sure they have applied to receive their Kootenai County Homeowners Property Tax Exemption.
 
April 15th isn't just the deadline to file your tax returns with the IRS, it's also the deadline with the county for application to have up to $100,000 deducted from the county tax assessor's value of your residence.  Your deduction will be 1/2 of your home's value, up to a maximum of $100,000.

The Idaho State Tax Commission has announced that the maximum homeowner's property tax exemption for 2013 will decrease again, from our current $83,974 to $81,000.
In 2011, the maximum exemption was $92,040.  In 2010, $101,153.  In 2009, $104, 471.
What this means is that Idaho homeowners with property value on their principle residence above $163,000 will pay more property taxes next year.  Again.  We have seen the maximum exemption decrease every year for at least five years. As a result, our property taxes rise by the corresponding amount each year.

Property owners in Kootenai County, Idaho are looking at a reduction in the amount of the exemption they will receive in 2012 on their primary residence of $8,066.
The Idaho Tax Commission has calculated the 2012 maximum exemption at $83,974, down from last year's maximum of $92,040.  The exemption on taxable value applies to 50% of the home's assessed value, and up to one acre of land. 
Under state law, the Tax Commission adjusts the exemption amount each years based on the Idaho Housing Price Index.
