For you Rolling Stones fans, the group is re-releasing their classic album Goat's Head Soup into a multi-volume set complete with re-digited music, videos, and story lines from the past.
The group released this video from the early 1970's as a promo for the album. It is a lot of fun to see the Stones as young men.

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2020 Encore 1 - 07/21/20 07:13 PM
Due to unforeseen circumstances, many of the Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2020 Edition posts have been lost. But there is still plenty of good music to listen too.
The Corona Virus/ COVID-19 pandemic has changed some of the ways we live our lives. Most rock concerts and live stage performances have been canceled or at least postponed. Yet, the performers that we enjoy are still playing, even if their fans cannot participate.
There have been a lot of performers that have offered virtual concerts which can be fun in the absence of live music.
One of the latest is a compilation of performers … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2020 Redux, Day 5 - 05/25/20 09:56 AM
Here is a redux of a lost 2020m blog post. Enjoy!
I must admit that I was never really a big Springsteen fan. I suppose that when he was releasing his most popular music, I was listening to something else. But who can deny the impact that “The Boss” has had on rock and pop throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s?
I also freely admit that when I was working in New Jersey in the ‘90s I felt compelled to make a pilgrimage to Springsteen’s hometown of Freehold (although most people think he grew up in Asbury Park). Monmouth County has now created an … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2020 Edition, Day 4 - 05/21/20 07:44 PM
Today we are going to jump back to the early days of Rock & Roll.
Rock Around the Clock was not the first Rock & Roll recording. Nor was it the first successful record of the genre. That honor goes to Big Joe Turner for his song Shake Rattle & Roll, which reached No. 1 on the billboard chart in 1954. Nevertheless, Bill Haley’s version of Rock Around the Clock became song that catapulted Rock & Roll into the mainstream.
The original full title of the song was "We're Gonna Rock Around the Clock Tonight!" which was used on the original Decca recordings. … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 30 - 06/29/19 12:45 PM
Well here we are at the end of another of The Soundtrack of a Lifetime series. It has been a lot of fun remembering old songs that we enjoyed over more than a 60 year period. Who would have thought that Rock & Roll would endure so long?
For those of you who have been following along, thanks for your time. If you missed a few articles, you can revisit them all at My Blog.
For our final song for the 2019 edition we have an oldie from one of the originators of Rock & Roll, Antoine "Fats" Domino (no relation). Fats … (3 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019 Edition - Day 28 - 06/20/19 08:49 AM
It's day 28 here on the Soundtrack. How about a little soul music? Here is an artist that has a unique sound in part because of his heritage. Aaron Neville owes a mix of Africa-American, Caucasian and Native American roots as well as his Cajun influence for his different sound.
Neville has had four platinum albums, four top ten hits which include three number one hits.
He has also recorded with his brothers as a member of the group The Neville Brothers.
Our song today is one of my favorites,"Tell It Like It Is". It is a song written by George … (1 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019 Edition - Day 27 - 06/19/19 04:26 PM
I enjoy when a song tells a story. In this case the story is by a band named Lynyrd Skynryd. Skynrd is a rock band that has often billed themselves as the King's of Southern Rock.
The band released their first album in 1973. With songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Simple Man and Free Bird, their popularity continued to grow as they released a new album every year until 1977.
Unfortunately, in October 1977 lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed in a plane crash. The rest of the band continued to perform … (2 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019 Edition - Day 26 - 06/19/19 09:10 AM
How do you follow up after being one of the Beatles, who in my opinion, were the greatest rock band ever? Well it takes some doing, but you keep going with another really good band called Wings. When most people think of the band Wings they think only of McCartney and rightly so, he was the driving force behind Wings. But one thing Paul really wanted to accomplish with Wings was to start over with a new band and create great music again. I think he accomplished his goal.
In creating Wings, Paul looked to long-time friend Denny Laine of Moody Blues … (7 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019 Edition - Day 25 - 06/18/19 11:44 AM
The Soundtrack contains music from all genre, soul, pop, blues and jazz. Every so often a jazz artist connects with a wider audience. In 1977 a flugelhorn player released an album entitled "Feels So Good" . The artists name is Chuck Mangione. The title song was originally over 10 minutes long, but in 1978 Mangione released a shortened version as a single. The shortened version went to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1979 the song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Record of the Year but lost out to Billy Joel.
Mangione was so popular at that point in his … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019 Edition - Day 24 - 06/18/19 11:16 AM
Neil Diamond is an other performer that achieved early success as a songwriter then later became a renowned on-stage performer and actor.
Neil has had 10 number one singles and 38 songs in the Top Ten.
With great songs like Cracklin' Rose, Song Sung Blue and America his music has spanned the generations. It is amazing how popular he is with an audience of younger patrons, many of whom were not born when his songs were released.
Diamond has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time
Neil Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of … (1 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019 Edition - Day 23 - 06/18/19 10:52 AM
The Electric Light Orchestra is another one of those bands that seems to have become more popular as time has gone on. The band was formed in 1970 by Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, Rick Price and Bev Bevan. They wanted to pick up where The Beatles left off. But Wood and Price soon left the band. Jeff Lynne became the driving force behind the band producing such hits as Evil Woman, Can't Get You Out of My Mind, Mr. Blue Sky and more.
From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated fifteen Top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100.The band has the … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 22 - 06/14/19 07:55 PM
Well, we made it to day seven of Carole King week. We have already showcased some of the songs that made other artists famous. So it is only fitting that we include one of Carole’s performances. In addition to her songwriting ability, Carole King demonstrated a knack for performing as well, becoming one of the world’s most recognizable voices.
Her 1971 album Tapestry cemented Carole in our minds as a performer. The album won four Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame.
Yesterday we had the pleasure to see a snippet from the Kennedy Center Honors were she … (3 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 21 - 06/14/19 09:17 AM
What could be more appropriate for my Soundtrack, than a song written by one of our pre-emanate song writers Carole King and performed by The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin? Aretha Franklin’s career was absolutely amazing. When you consider not only did she release 112 singles, she sold more than 75 million worldwide. But she wasn’t just a singer. She was a composer, world class pianist and an actress.
Just some of the notable moments in her career include her performance of Nessun dorma, the aria from the opera as a last minute replacement for Luciana Pavarotti at the 1998 Grammy Awards? … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 20 - 06/14/19 08:19 AM
The Drifters were one of my favorite singing groups when I was growing up. With huge hits like On Broadway, Under the Boardwalk, Saturday Night at the Movies and today’s song Up On the Roof.
Up on the Roof was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. The song has been recorded by numerous artists including James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, and of course King herself. But the most popular version has been the 1962 version by The Drifters. The Drifters' recording of "Up on the Roof" has been named number 114 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.
I had … (3 comments)

So really, The Monkees? With so many great songs and bands how did The Monkees become so popular? Why television of course. The Monkees were a pop and rock band that was comprised of actor-musicians that were formed to produce a television show. The show was a comedy that featured the band singing their way through a variety of humorous situations. The show caught on and the music they produced became very popular. In the end, the music outlasted the TV show.
When you think of The Monkees, you do not think of Carole King. But, one of The Monkees' biggest hits … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 18 - 06/13/19 08:35 PM
One of Carole King’s longtime friends and collaborators is James Taylor. Taylor who is a major star in his own right has often performed with King live on stage. He can also be found helping out on several of King’s recordings.
Today’s song is You’ve Got a Friend. Carole King told Taylor  the inspiration for the song was in part derived from the line "...I could not find a friend", in Taylor's song Fire and Rain.
Taylor and King both recorded the song in 1971. Remarkably, they did it in simultaneous recording sessions. With Taylor recording his version for his album Mud Slide … (3 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 16 - 06/13/19 07:30 AM
Its Carole King week on the Soundtrack. One of the most iconic songwriters of our generation is undeniably Carole King. When I decided to include Carole as an artist, I began to look at which of her songs to feature. As I looked at the long list of song choices I decided to focus not only on Carole King, but also on some the artists that made her songs famous.
It is somewhat hard to grasp how many great songs she wrote with her then husband and collaborator Gerry Goffin and a host of other stars. Her first number one hit “Will You … (3 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 15 - 06/11/19 04:00 PM
In 1978 the disco scene was still reigning over pop music. Dancing was back in vogue and the result was a plethora of dance songs. Most of these songs and dances did not stand the test of time, but one song somehow caught the attention of crowds and evolved out of the disco scene into an anthem for parties, weddings, and sporting events all over the world.
"Y.M.C.A." was the song written and performed by the Village People, and made it to number 2 on the pop charts in the U.S.
The song which is based on a double meaning lauds the … (4 comments)

music: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 14 - 06/09/19 05:57 PM
Welcome to day fourteen of the Soundtrack. Hopefully, you have been following along and enjoying some of my favorite songs. It is a great way to take a couple of minutes out of your busy day to reflect on how we got to where we are now.
Today’s song is one that was performed by a band from my home town Chicago. Originally formed in 1967, they took the name Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) after the public transportation organization in the city. The real C.T.A. took issue with the band's use of their moniker so the band shortened the name to Chicago.
Chicago … (2 comments)

Thanks for following along on my musical adventure. Today we feature the band, Fleetwood Mac.
Fleetwood Mac is named after Mick Fleetwood and John McVie founded along with original member Peter Green. Green left the group in 1969, leaving it to Fleetwood and McVie. Over the years the band has added a number of talented members. Christine McVie joined the band in 1970, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joining in 1974.
Band members John McVie and Christine McVie have had an on again off again relationship as did Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. This sometimes caused turmoil during recording sessions and tours. … (3 comments)
