When people talk about the Sonoran Desert it churns up visions of the movie Lawrence of Arabia. Endless sand dunes, rocks, and scorching heat. Well, that last part – scorching heat – is correct, but only part of the year. For most of the year, the weather is balmy and quite comfortable. The truth is the Sonoran Desert which encompasses most of Arizona and a portion of Southern California looks nothing like the desert where T. E. Lawrence went to battle against the Ottoman Turks. For those of you who know the Phoenix area, you know that it is a desert. The desert can be a hard place to live in the summer. But Phoenix also experiences a summer monsoon season when we get a significant portion of our annual rainfall. The amount of rainfall varies from year to year so you are never really sure how much will fall. This year has been a good year with more than normal precipitation. Many of you may not have noticed that I haven’t been posting lately. You see, I have been somewhat “off the grid” for the last few weeks. I have been fortunate enough to be spending my time at a lovely cabin in Northern Wisconsin. Part of the beauty of this place is that it has no internet access. Even cell phone service is spotty unless you want to walk up to the main road where it gets a little better.
