video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2022 - Rod Stewart - 05/31/22 11:30 AM
My, my, my… When it comes to music, it seems that Rod Stewart has enjoyed more lives than a Siamese cat. Rod started out as a hard rocker in the ‘60 with the band Faces. Today he is best known for being a crooner of old standards. Along the way, he mastered several different sounds. Stewart seemed to prove that he can sing anything. Rock, disco, country, ballads, even Christmas music.
There were a lot of Rod Stewart songs to choose from, but today I chose to highlight "You're in My Heart”. The song released in 1977 was a top ten single … (6 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2022 - Rolling Stones - 05/31/22 08:02 AM
What makes a song an oldie? Is it just the age or is it because the sound no longer attracts a modern audience? Some bands defy the accepted logic. Their songs regardless of when they were recorded still sound like they could be recorded today and would still be popular.
The Rolling Stones are one of those groups. Some will argue they may be the greatest Rock & Roll band, although we have seen and listened to so many great bands it is difficult to anoint anyone with that honor.
Today’s song is The Rolling Stones performing "Jumpin' Jack Flash". The video recorded … (6 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2022 - Dave Mason - 05/31/22 07:57 AM
Some performers spend their whole life toiling as members of bands that never quite break into the top of the charts. Then when you see them live in concert you recognize what a great talent they possess. One performer that I enjoy seeing live on stage is Dave Mason.
Mason’s early success was with the rock band Traffic where he was overshadowed by Steve Winwood. He spent years as a session player with every big-name star from Paul McCartney to Michael Jackson. He even enjoyed a brief stint with Fleetwood Mac in the 1990s.
In 1970 he released a solo album that featured … (5 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2022 - George Harrison - 05/28/22 12:52 PM
As long as we are featuring former Beatle members, why not feature one of George Harrison’s last songs? This one was released in 1987 on his album Cloud Nine.
Not only was it the last No. 1 hit by George but, also the last No. 1 hit from any of the ex-Beatles as a solo artist. Oddly enough it also was the No. 1 record in the U.S. on the week that the Beatles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
I had the good fortune to see Harrison live on stage along with Billy Preston at a music venue … (4 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2022 - Ringo Starr - 05/28/22 12:44 PM
Welcome to June 2022 and this year's edition of the Soundtrack of a Lifetime. Each day in June since 2018, I endeavor to post a short article about a song that impacted my life. You will hear 30 songs in 30 days. Each article contains a link to an audio or video version of the song for your enjoyment.
Whenever you are looking for a song to sing along with you cannot go wrong with a song from one of the Beatles. Even after the Beatles broke up in 1970 they went on to successful solo careers recording hit after hit under … (10 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2021 - The Beatles - 05/31/21 11:05 AM
It is that time again!!! 30 Songs in 30 days.
Like so many other baby boomers, I grew up listening to Rock & Roll. From the mid-1950s right on up to the present day, Rock has endured. Even when we think the genre has run its course a new record or album surfaces that brings us back into the fold.
In June of 2018, I launched an effort to write a blogpost everyday for thirty days. I called it The Soundtrack of a Lifetime.
Listening to the songs was so much fun I decided to reprise The Soundtrack each year in June. Over … (20 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019, Day 28 Aaaron Neville - 06/20/19 08:49 AM
It's day 28 here on the Soundtrack. How about a little soul music? Here is an artist that has a unique sound in part because of his heritage. Aaron Neville owes a mix of Africa-American, Caucasian and Native American roots as well as his Cajun influence for his different sound.
Neville has had four platinum albums, four top ten hits which include three number one hits.
He has also recorded with his brothers as a member of the group The Neville Brothers.
Our song today is one of my favorites,"Tell It Like It Is". It is a song written by George … (1 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019, Day 27 Skynrd - 06/19/19 04:26 PM
I enjoy when a song tells a story. In this case the story is by a band named Lynyrd Skynryd. Skynrd is a rock band that has often billed themselves as the King's of Southern Rock.
The band released their first album in 1973. With songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Simple Man and Free Bird, their popularity continued to grow as they released a new album every year until 1977.
Unfortunately, in October 1977 lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed in a plane crash. The rest of the band continued to perform … (2 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019, Day 26 Wings - 06/19/19 09:10 AM
How do you follow up after being one of the Beatles, who in my opinion, were the greatest rock band ever? Well it takes some doing, but you keep going with another really good band called Wings. When most people think of the band Wings they think only of McCartney and rightly so, he was the driving force behind Wings. But one thing Paul really wanted to accomplish with Wings was to start over with a new band and create great music again. I think he accomplished his goal.
In creating Wings, Paul looked to long-time friend Denny Laine of Moody Blues … (7 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2019, Day 24 Neil Diamond - 06/18/19 11:16 AM
Neil Diamond is an other performer that achieved early success as a songwriter then later became a renowned on-stage performer and actor.
Neil has had 10 number one singles and 38 songs in the Top Ten.
With great songs like Cracklin' Rose, Song Sung Blue and America his music has spanned the generations. It is amazing how popular he is with an audience of younger patrons, many of whom were not born when his songs were released.
Diamond has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time
Neil Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of … (1 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019 Edition – Day 16 - Carol King - 06/13/19 07:30 AM
Its Carole King week on the Soundtrack. One of the most iconic songwriters of our generation is undeniably Carole King. When I decided to include Carole as an artist, I began to look at which of her songs to feature. As I looked at the long list of song choices I decided to focus not only on Carole King, but also on some the artists that made her songs famous.
It is somewhat hard to grasp how many great songs she wrote with her then husband and collaborator Gerry Goffin and a host of other stars. Her first number one hit “Will You … (3 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 15 Village People - 06/11/19 04:00 PM
In 1978 the disco scene was still reigning over pop music. Dancing was back in vogue and the result was a plethora of dance songs. Most of these songs and dances did not stand the test of time, but one song somehow caught the attention of crowds and evolved out of the disco scene into an anthem for parties, weddings, and sporting events all over the world.
"Y.M.C.A." was the song written and performed by the Village People, and made it to number 2 on the pop charts in the U.S.
The song which is based on a double meaning lauds the … (4 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 14 Chicago - 06/09/19 05:57 PM
Welcome to day fourteen of the Soundtrack. Hopefully, you have been following along and enjoying some of my favorite songs. It is a great way to take a couple of minutes out of your busy day to reflect on how we got to where we are now.
Today’s song is one that was performed by a band from my home town Chicago. Originally formed in 1967, they took the name Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) after the public transportation organization in the city. The real C.T.A. took issue with the band's use of their moniker so the band shortened the name to Chicago.
Chicago … (2 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 12 Fleetwood Mac - 06/06/19 04:57 PM
Thanks for following along on my musical adventure. Today we feature the band, Fleetwood Mac.
Fleetwood Mac is named after Mick Fleetwood and John McVie founded along with original member Peter Green. Green left the group in 1969, leaving it to Fleetwood and McVie. Over the years the band has added a number of talented members. Christine McVie joined the band in 1970, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joining in 1974.
Band members John McVie and Christine McVie have had an on again off again relationship as did Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. This sometimes caused turmoil during recording sessions and tours. … (3 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 11 Patsy Cline - 06/05/19 07:34 PM
In the early days of rock music came from a lot of different places, R&B, Pop, Country, etc. One of the more sultry voices to cross over from the country music scene to the pop charts was Patsy Cline. Born Virginia Patterson Hensley she adopted the name, Patsy Cline. Patsy had hit after hit with her Nashville sound.
Cline was just beginning to be recognized worldwide when she died at age 30 in the crash of a private airplane.
Today’s song, Crazy, was written and originally recorded by Willie Nelson. The story goes that in 1961, Clines husband heard the Nelson version … (4 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 10 The Byrds - 06/03/19 07:46 PM
The Byrds band was first formed in 1964 by Roger McGuinn. They were one of the first groups to bring folk rock onto the pop charts. Anyone that listened to popular music in the early sixties will recognize the opening riffs from songs like Mr. Tamborine Man and Turn, Turn, Turn. The music, which emanated from a twelve string guitar played by McQuinn gave their melodies a distinct sound.
Over the life of the band personnel changes were frequent with only McGuinn being the consistent member.
Today’s song Turn, Turn, Turn was written by Pete Seeger and performed by many folk artists over … (3 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 8 The Four Tops - 06/02/19 09:15 AM
For me, it is often the same old song. So many of the great songs I listened to growing up still sound great today. It is remarkable how many young people listen to old songs that were written and performed before they were born,
Today's song It’s The Same Old Song by The Four Tops, a vocal group from Detroit, is a good example.
The original group was composed of lead singer Levi Stubbs, Abdu Fakir, Renaldo Benson, and Lawrence Payton. One of the unique things about the Four Tops was that the lead singer, Stubbs, was a baritone. Almost all other vocal … (5 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 6 Righteous Bros - 06/01/19 09:04 AM
In 1964 Soul music was still very much the most popular genre for pop singers. The Beatles and the British Invasion was just starting to sweep the nation, but a lot of people still liked listening to what was then termed blue eyed soul. The duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, who called themselves The Righteous Brothers, released a song produced by Phil Specter titled "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin". It became a number one hit in both the U.S. and the U.K.
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" has the claim of being the most-played song in the history of American … (3 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 4 Smokey - 05/28/19 08:21 PM
Smokey Robinson is one of the founding creators of the Motown sound.
Starting out with the singing group The Miracles, Smokey became one of the first acts signed to the Motown label. In fact, he had actually been friends with Barry Gordy since before the formation of Motown Records. In late 1960, The Miracles recorded their first hit single, Shop Around, which became Motown's first million-selling hit record.
Smokey Robinson ultimately would produce 26 top forty hits as the lead singer for The Miracles. He also was a prolific songwriter and producer. Between 1960 and 1970, the group released other top ten hits … (3 comments)

video: Soundtrack of a Lifetime – 2019, Day 3 Wilburys - 05/25/19 08:57 PM
Every once in a while a band of superstar performers unite together to create a Super Group. In April 1988 former Beatle George Harrison and Electric Light Orchestra band leader Jeff Lynne came up with the idea to bring in their friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison to record a song titled “Handle with Care”. The track was so successful they decided to form a band and record an entire album. The result was the album entitled Traveling Wilburys Vol 1.
As part of the fun, each of the band members adopted a pseudonym.
Nelson Wilbury - George Harrison … (4 comments)
