My, my, my… When it comes to music, it seems that Rod Stewart has enjoyed more lives than a Siamese cat. Rod started out as a hard rocker in the ‘60 with the band Faces. Today he is best known for being a crooner of old standards. Along the way, he mastered several different sounds. Stewart seemed to prove that he can sing anything. Rock, disco, country, ballads, even Christmas music.

What makes a song an oldie? Is it just the age or is it because the sound no longer attracts a modern audience? Some bands defy the accepted logic. Their songs regardless of when they were recorded still sound like they could be recorded today and would still be popular.
The Rolling Stones are one of those groups. Some will argue they may be the greatest Rock & Roll band, although we have seen and listened to so many great bands it is difficult to anoint anyone with that honor.

Some performers spend their whole life toiling as members of bands that never quite break into the top of the charts. Then when you see them live in concert you recognize what a great talent they possess. One performer that I enjoy seeing live on stage is Dave Mason.
Mason’s early success was with the rock band Traffic where he was overshadowed by Steve Winwood. He spent years as a session player with every big-name star from Paul McCartney to Michael Jackson. He even enjoyed a brief stint with Fleetwood Mac in the 1990s.

As long as we are featuring former Beatle members, why not feature one of George Harrison’s last songs? This one was released in 1987 on his album Cloud Nine.
Not only was it the last No. 1 hit by George but, also the last No. 1 hit from any of the ex-Beatles as a solo artist. Oddly enough it also was the No. 1 record in the U.S. on the week that the Beatles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Like so many other baby boomers, I grew up listening to Rock & Roll. From the mid-1950s right on up to the present day, Rock has endured. Even when we think the genre has run its course a new record or album surfaces that brings us back into the fold.
In June of 2018, I launched an effort to write a blogpost everyday for thirty days. I called it The Soundtrack of a Lifetime.

It's day 28 here on the Soundtrack. How about a little soul music? Here is an artist that has a unique sound in part because of his heritage. Aaron Neville owes a mix of Africa-American, Caucasian and Native American roots as well as his Cajun influence for his different sound.

I enjoy when a song tells a story. In this case the story is by a band named Lynyrd Skynryd. Skynrd is a rock band that has often billed themselves as the King's of Southern Rock.
The band released their first album in 1973. With songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Simple Man and Free Bird, their popularity continued to grow as they released a new album every year until 1977.

How do you follow up after being one of the Beatles, who in my opinion, were the greatest rock band ever? Well it takes some doing, but you keep going with another really good band called Wings. When most people think of the band Wings they think only of McCartney and rightly so, he was the driving force behind Wings. But one thing Paul really wanted to accomplish with Wings was to start over with a new band and create great music again. I think he accomplished his goal.

In 1978 the disco scene was still reigning over pop music. Dancing was back in vogue and the result was a plethora of dance songs. Most of these songs and dances did not stand the test of time, but one song somehow caught the attention of crowds and evolved out of the disco scene into an anthem for parties, weddings, and sporting events all over the world.

Originally formed in 1967, they took the name Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) after the public transportation organization in the city. Fleetwood Mac is named after Mick Fleetwood and John McVie founded along with original member Peter Green. Green left the group in 1969, leaving it to Fleetwood and McVie. Over the years the band has added a number of talented members. Christine McVie joined the band in 1970, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joining in 1974.

In the early days of rock music came from a lot of different places, R&B, Pop, Country, etc. One of the more sultry voices to cross over from the country music scene to the pop charts was Patsy Cline. Born Virginia Patterson Hensley she adopted the name, Patsy Cline. Patsy had hit after hit with her Nashville sound.
Cline was just beginning to be recognized worldwide when she died at age 30 in the crash of a private airplane.

The Byrds band was first formed in 1964 by Roger McGuinn. They were one of the first groups to bring folk rock onto the pop charts. Anyone that listened to popular music in the early sixties will recognize the opening riffs from songs like Mr. Tamborine Man and Turn, Turn, Turn. The music, which emanated from a twelve string guitar played by McQuinn gave their melodies a distinct sound.
Over the life of the band personnel changes were frequent with only McGuinn being the consistent member.

In 1964 Soul music was still very much the most popular genre for pop singers. The Beatles and the British Invasion was just starting to sweep the nation, but a lot of people still liked listening to what was then termed blue eyed soul. The duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, who called themselves The Righteous Brothers, released a song produced by Phil Specter titled "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin". Smokey Robinson is one of the founding creators of the Motown sound.
Starting out with the singing group The Miracles, Smokey became one of the first acts signed to the Motown label. In fact, he had actually been friends with Barry Gordy since before the formation of Motown Records. In late 1960, The Miracles recorded their first hit single, Shop Around, which became Motown's first million-selling hit record.

Every once in a while a band of superstar performers unite together to create a Super Group. In April 1988 former Beatle George Harrison and Electric Light Orchestra band leader Jeff Lynne came up with the idea to bring in their friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison to record a song titled “Handle with Care”. The track was so successful they decided to form a band and record an entire album. The result was the album entitled Traveling Wilburys Vol 1.
