Today, 7/30/2015, Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgage was 3.98% down from 4.04% last week. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.17%, down from 3.21% last week. A year ago the average rate for a 30 year fixed-rate loan was 4.12%.
A Freddie Mac spokesperson stated:
"Monday's 8 percent decline in Chinese stock prices triggered similar -- though smaller -- sell-offs in global equity markets. The associated flight to quality drove U.S. Treasury yields down nearly 5 basis points. Accordingly, 30-year fixed-rate mortgages fell 6 basis points to 3.98 percent. Since rates are still below the 4% mark, that makes homes much more affordable, even though prices for the homes themselves are creeping higher as well. So give serious thought to making a move. Today, 8/14/2014,  Freddie Mac reported that the average mortgage interest rate for 30 year fixed-rate mortgage was 4.12% down a tad from 4.14% last week. The average interest rate for 15 year fixed-rate mortgages was 3.24%, down a little from 3.27% last week. A year ago the 30 year rate was 4.40%.
We have seen little change in the rates people pay. They have been pretty stable for several months. And the low levels help make homes more affordable for more people.
