hurricane preparedness: Last Post on Hurricane Dorian - Florida Bids the Storm "Good-Bye" - 09/04/19 09:32 AM

This will be my last post concerning Hurricane Dorian. As of 11 AM today, Wednesday, 9/4/2019, Hurricane Dorian is continuing its northern trek and is no longer a threat to most of Florida. It will pass by our northern border soon. The experts now say that it will likely stay just off shore in the Atlantic as it moves more northeasterly in the days to come. From what I hear on the Weather Channel, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina are preparing their coastal areas for high tides and possible flooding. With North Carolina being the most probably landfall site.

hurricane preparedness: Hurricane Dorian will Likely Miss Most of Florida! Nice!!! - 08/31/19 02:30 PM

As of 5 PM today, 8/31/2019, now Hurricane Dorian's projected path has changed drastically since my post of yesterday. The experts now say that it will pass us out to sea in the Atlantic on Monday and Tuesday of next week. If you look at the "cone" you will notice that most of Florida, including Zephyrhills, Pasco County and Tampa are no longer included.
One of the reporters on the Weather Channel said that the storm would likely pass Cape Kennedy while 100 miles out into the Atlantic. That is a pretty good buffer zone if it comes true. Most of … (2 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Hurricane Dorian's Course Now along Florida's Eastern Coast - 08/30/19 02:26 PM

As of 5 PM today, 8/30/2019, now Hurricane Dorian continues its west northwest track with a predicted landfall in south Florida early Tuesday morning. However, this latest update shows that the center line of the cone is now over the eastern coastline of Florida rather than up the center of the state. Could it be that this storm will curve back out to sea??
At the moment it is over open warm water and that only adds fuel to the storm's strength. It is now considered a major storm, and they say it will be the same when it comes ashore. … (2 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Hurricane Irma Set to go All the Way up the Florida Peninsula - 09/08/17 05:04 PM

As of today, 9/8/2017, Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm, is about to skim over the northern coast of Cuba and then take a right turn and head directly up the Florida peninsula in a northerny trajectory. It had been thought that it would go up along the eastern coast of the state, but this afternoon the projections show it going further west. Now it appears that the eye will go up the middle of the state. Warnings and watches are up all the way to Tampa, mostly for storm surge and flooding. However, they say that very high winds will … (1 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Hurricane Matthew gets Closer to the Eastern Coast of Florida! - 10/05/16 09:42 AM

As of today, 10/5/2016, Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm, is now north of Cuba and heading for the Bahamas. I was there many years ago, and most of the islands there are just a few feet above sea level. So storm surges are going to be a problem for them. As they will be for the eastern coast of Florida. As you can see in the above image, its projected path has it moving in a northwesterly direction, with its center grazing the eastern coast of Florida around Thursday and Friday of this week. The most western part of the cone … (0 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Hurricane Matthew Update - Path Moves More Westerly - 10/04/16 07:23 AM

As of today, 10/4/2016, Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm, is slowly moving between Cuba and Haiti. As you can see in the above image, its projected path has it moving in a northwesterly direction, with its center grazing the eastern coast of Florida around Friday of this week. That is still a few days off and its path could change. The most western part of the cone even touches Zephyrhills where I live. Though the edges of the cone should not get nearly the damage that the center does. And being on the western side of the storm is typically better, from … (0 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Will Hurricane Matthew Visit Florida? Be Prepared Just in Case! - 10/02/16 05:06 AM

As of today, 10/2/2016, Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4, storm is still south of Cuba, but is predicted to make a northerly turn shortly. As you can see in the above image, its projected path has it moving in a northerly direction, skirting Florida's east coast on Thursday and Friday of this week. However, that is a long way off in the life of a hurricane, so anything is possible. We certainly hope that the forecasts are correct and that it does not move to a more westerly track taking it right up the center of the state.
This storm definitely bears watching. … (3 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Tropical Storm Hermine Approaching Florida's Northern Gulf Coast - 09/01/16 07:08 AM

This is the track of Tropical Storm Hermine as it approaches Florida's gulf coast on Thursday afternoon on September 1, 2016. It appears that it may turn into a hurricane briefly before hitting land. Then it changes back to a tropical storm. With those we are not worried so much about high winds (unless you live on the coast) but with the heavy rain which can cause flooding.
Luckily, Florida is mostly flat so we don't have a lot of rivers that flow rapidly like you have seen in Texas and other states. Mostly it is standing water. However, that has its … (1 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Tropical Storm Karen Projected to Miss Most of the State of Florida! - 10/04/13 07:01 AM
As of today, 10/4/2013, Tropical Storm Karen is out in the Gulf of Mexico. The projected path has it coming ashore somewhere from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle. Well to the north of Zephyrhills and most of Florida. If you look at the path of of the storm on the map to the left you will note an "S" over its path in some places. S = Tropical Storm. Mostly a lot of rain and some windy hours.  For those of us in the Zephyrhills area it appears that we have again "dodged a bullet". It has been a long time since we have a storm of any consequence do much damage here. Let's … (1 comments)

hurricane preparedness: No Major Storms at Halfway Point of 2013 Hurricane Season in Florida! - 09/06/13 11:17 AM
Seven days ago, at the start of September, we passed the halfway point of the 2013 hurricane season here in the Sunshine State of Florida. The season runs from June 1st to November 30th of each year. So far we have had no major storms at all.
We have had a summer that seemed rainier than normal, but we needed the extra moisture to replenish our underground aquifers that have become depleted over the past years. The extra precipitation also greatly diminished the risk of wildfires. I can't remember hearing of a single one so far this summer near here. Just a … (3 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Tropical Storm Emily Dissipates Over Cuba - Appears to Not Threaten Florida Now - 08/04/11 02:33 PM
Today, 8/4/2011, Tropical Storm Emily more or less gave up the ghost as it passed by Haiti on its way to Cuba. It now appears that it will not be a serious threat to Florida. We could get some rain out of the tropical depression if it passes by, but the National Hurricane Center does not feel that we will get much more than that.
You can click on the map to the left to see a larger view.
Do keep in mind that sometimes conditions can change, even though that appears unlikely with Emily. But it pays to be alert and take cautious steps to … (4 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Tropical Storm Hanna Southeast of Florida/Gustav Long Gone - 09/02/08 09:43 AM
Hurricane Hanna has now been downgraded to a tropical storm and is passing over Haiti, and the Dominican Republic as it moves towards Florida. It had been a hurricane but apparently weakend as it passed over the islands. The projected path of Hanna does not seem to carry it right over Tampa and Zephyrhills, but does bring it close enough that we need to keep an eye out for it. It may affect us more than Gustav did and we need to keep an eye on it to see where it is going and if it strengthens. The water in the … (0 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Hurricane Preparedness and Related Links - 09/01/08 07:31 AM
Now that some serious storms are appearing on our horizons, I thought that it might be helpful to post some information that could be useful to my readers and help them prepare their homes for the possible arrival of a hurricane. (People in Minnesota and Wyoming can probably ignore this post). NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has created a brochure that contains basic information to assist you in preparing your home and family for a natural disaster like a hurricane. You can download a copy at the following link: Download hurricane_safety.pdf

hurricane preparedness: Now Category 4 HURRICANE Gustav Heads Across Gulf Toward Mississippi/Louisiana/Texas - 08/30/08 06:04 AM
Tropical Storm Gustav is now Hurricane Gustav and has rapidly strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 miles per hour. It is still heading across the Gulf of Mexico and 5 day projections show it heading toward Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Here in Zephyrhills, Florida at 5:30 PM on Saturday, August 30th, there is a light rain and some thunder and lightning. However, at this point in time the dangerous center of the storm is not predicted to come near our area and no watches or warnings have been issued for the Tampa area. You can click on … (0 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Tropical Storm Fay Headed Toward Florida - 08/17/08 11:11 AM
Weather forcasters are predicting that Tropical Storm Fay is heading toward Florida and could arrive in the Keys tomorrow (Monday, August 18), and on the mainland on Tuesday. At that point no one knows whether it will reach hurricane strength or not. So far predicted paths of the storm show it going nearly up the center of the state. But this far out a lot can happen to alter where it ends up going. If you click on the picture to the left you see a larger version of the image and can see where it is located as of the … (0 comments)

hurricane preparedness: Hurricane Season Has Started In Florida. Be Prepared! - 06/06/07 08:21 AM
Here in Florida we just began our hurricane season. Typically this runs from June 1st to November 30th of each year. Though the experts attempt to predict how many storms will hit us and how severe they will be, there is no way of being 100% sure. This year they seem to feel that we will have an above average number of storms. Now is the time to be thinking about getting insurance and/or reviewing the policy you currently have to ensure that you have adequate coverage.
Be aware that once a hurricane warning or watch is declared for any part … (0 comments)
