feral horses cumberland island georgia: Imagine an island...................Cumberland Island, Georgia - 05/18/10 01:08 AM
Imagine an island the size of Manhattan that allows no more than 300 visitors a day.

Imagine an island with no paved roads and no access except by boat.

Imagine an island with white sandy beaches and beautiful dunes.

Imagine this island with feral horses walking on the same paths you walk on.

Imagine a beach so long that the eye cannot see the entire length due to the curvature of the earth.

Imagine a beach where you cannot buy anything and you cannot leave any trash behind.

feral horses cumberland island georgia: Cumberland Island, Georgia.....this is a great time of year to visit.... - 01/09/09 08:35 PM
Cumberland Island, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia is larger than Manhattan Island, but never has more then 300 visitors per day.  Cumberland is the southernmost barrier island on the Georgia coast. The island is  over 36,000 acres, 17.5 miles  long and approximately 1 ½ to 3 ½ miles wide. There is no causeway or bridge to the island so most of the visitors to the island take the Cumberland Ferry from Saint Mary's, Georgia.

Cumberland Island is an amazing National Sea Shore managed by the National Park Service.  An island larger than the size of Manhattan Island allowing a maximum of 300 visitors per day keeps it beautifully pristine.  There was so much to do on Cumberland Island is just a day trip that I couldn't cover everything in the one post, so see my Cumberland Island, Georgia Part I - about Cumberland feral horses.  Below is a photo taken from the ferry as we traveled to Cumberland from Saint Mary's, Georgia.

The view as you are arriving to the island from the ferry … (10 comments)
