I love the diversity in our valley: Columbia Falls: still a timber town with Plum Creek, RBM lumber, also the gateway to Glacier National Park. Flathead River runs through it. Whitefish: the home of Big Mountain (Whitefish Mountain Resort) for winter and summer fun, old west downtown, situated on Whitefish Lake with bike trails and the Whitefish River running through it. From ski-bums to high end 2nd or 3rd homes, much diversity. Home of Alpine Theater Project and the Whitefish Theater with 2 venues to perform in. Bigfork: On Flathead Lake and you can boat to the town. Artist and restaurant (0 comments)

It was a warmish, sunny day so we drove up to "the Park" yesterday. Stopped at Montana Coffee Traders in Columbia Falls on the way. It was Cabin Fever Days in Martin City - just west of the park so saw some action in that "town". We drove along Lake McDonald observing the beauty that was snow covered. The lake had some ice but was not solid. Went back to Apgar, walked through the art store then took a walk through the trees. The walk had been packed down with snow shoes and cross country skis so it was an easy (2 comments)

Pretty exciting and a vote for an improving economy in the Flathead Valley. Cabelas tracks catalog orders and it looks like this valley deserves an actual store. Cabelas to begin construction next spring targeting a fall opening, hmm maybe timed for hunting season?? The Daily Interlake had a very interesting article on beer breweries in NW Montana. It seems we are 2nd per capita in the nation for micro breweries. Flathead Lake Brewery in Bigfork is opening in the former large building of the bowling alley in town. Their business is expanding and they needed more room. Desert Mountain Brewing is getting ready to open (0 comments)

Ah summertime in the Flathead Valley! Daily temps have been in the 80's. A nice summer thunder storm roared through last night and then the sun came back out. Haying has begun in the valley with an abundant crop due to the early season rains. Going to the Sun road in Glacier National Park opens next Wed. A record late opening due to the record snow pack. I plan on taking a drive up to see all the snow that is still covering many of the trails. Kalispell concerts at Depot Park have been going strong. Tuesday's concert saw the grass (0 comments)

The first 3 day weekend is upon us in the Flathead Valley. Hotels and resorts are reporting an increase in bookings for this summer. Last year was way up and this year might even surpass it. If you plan on staying in a historic Glacier Park Lodge this summer, be aware that my favorite: Many Glacier Lodge is at 1/2 capacity due to renovations. Click on http://www.glacierparkinc.com/ for information and reservations. This company is located in Columbia Falls and employs local residents so you will get a great deal of information and assistance from them. Lingering snowpack is effecting some of the lodgings (0 comments)

Just like most parts of the country, the economy and slow down in construction is impacting the tax base and school levies. Last week it appeared Kalispell would lose 7 firefighters. I am happy to say that the union and the city worked hard together to re-structure man hours and it looks like this number of lost jobs is not going to happen. Kalispell Dist. 5 schools: the activity directors of both Flathead and Glacier High have gotten together and squeezed out another $100k in cuts to their budget. The season of 5K runs has begun. The Summit Health Club is (0 comments)

Listings: This week I listed an investment property duplex in Kalispell which is 7 years old and always occupied. 3 bed and 2 full bath in a nice subdivision. I also was showing some buyers other duplex listings in Kalispell this week. My listing is larger and higher priced. There has been a lot of buyer activity in all duplex listings on the market recently. I listed a home Saturday in Ponderosa Pines. One of the nicer subdivisions in Kalispell. All these homes are on approximately .50 of an acre, have access to a homeowner park and in the winter (0 comments)

Holiday activities in the Flathead Valley are picking up speed, see a list below. Took a drive on the Kalispell bypass (alternate route) last weekend. Speeds up the drive from the north to the south. No traffic lights but roundabouts control access and exit. Had a wonderful dinner at the Whitefish Lake Restaurant Sunday night. The atmosphere cannot be beat. Log inside, roaring fire, low lights, and great food. Reserve early for Christmas plans. Another restaurant in Whitefish, Latitude 48 on Central downtown, good value and good food. Events this weekend: Whitefish Mountain Resort opens to (0 comments)

Can you believe July is coming to an end?! The City of Whitefish is once again grappling with Hwy 93 retail expansion. The merchants downtown are fighting it. The flip side is that if Whitefish does not allow such growth, it pushes retail shoppers 15 min. south into Kalispell. Whitefish also charges a very minor resort sales tax on retail that does not assist generating shoppers in that town. We attended a Flathead County planning meeting with the West Valley advisory board last week. 2 brothers want to get a permit for a motorcross track which they have (0 comments)

First the housing market: Jim Kelly of Kelly Appraisal recently said in the newspaper that our market appears to be stabilizing in the Flathead Valley. Foreclosures seem to have peaked in Jan/Feb. This matches my observations that we are seeing more bank owned listings than short sales, and April was a very good month for closings. Compared to last year, March closings were up significantly, approximately 60% higher than the previous year. We took a drive last Sunday up the Star Meadows Road between Kalispell and Whitefish. Round Meadows is an area for x-country skiing and snowshoeing in the (0 comments)

Ah, from snow to sunshine and warmth! I am watching the sky to the east just start to lighten up as the sun begins its ascent. It is light out now until past 8:30pm. I was riding my young horse last night after dinner. Love those kind of relaxing evenings on horseback. Peas and spinach are planted, starts in the green house are doing well. I spent 3 very long days learning the ins and outs about being a food coach with Genesis Transformation. This healthy eating format helped me to get my health back and also lose a lot of (1 comments)

Questions: Why does it want to snow the week AFTER Big Mountain closes for the season? Why do I need long underwear this week to ride my horse in a lesson? Why did I need to dig out my wool hat and gloves to do chores tonight? Why? Because we live in Montana where anything is possible! After a warm sunny, and balmy March, April has made us switch gears again. Easter weekend wasn't too bad, just chilly. Oh well, spring will return any day now. Attended an awesome Good Friday and Easter service (7am may I add) at (0 comments)

Montana is a contested state for the Democratic part presidential nominee in November's election. Obama has visited our valley and Senator Biden is visiting today. Our state is traditionally Republican but we do have a Democrat for governor currently. We'll see which way the state goes in November. Farmers Market in Kalispell yesterday morning was great! Purchased some local melons, spaghetti squash, flowers, onions and other produce. Always a fun social event, running into friends. Followed the shopping with a bike ride down the rails to trails bike path. The path wanders through countryside and along Ashley Creek before (1 comments)

Wow! 400+ at the Event at Rebecca Farms this weekend. 4 former competitors from the US and Canada are competing in horse events at the Olympics this year. I am volunteering to be a jump judge at the cross country event. Horse trailers have been pulling through town all week heading to this big qualifying 3 day event. It is free to attend and you are allowed to sit near the jumps to watch. Dressage is today and then 2 days of cross country and Sunday is stadium jumping. Very exciting! It was a scenic ride along the east-side of the Hungry Horse Reservoir. We had an elk walk out of the woods and stand in the trail in front of our horses. Have never seen an elk on a trail ride before! The reservoir was beautiful down below us. We seemed to be the first on this trail for the season. Many large trees were down from winter storms across the trail, in fact one was so large we turned back. Did another ride with a friend this week at Herron Park. We climbed up the hill (or the horses did) (0 comments)
