The numbers are in, skier visits were up 7% for 2013/2014 ski season. Season passes accounted for about 1/2 of these visits. It was a tremendous year for snow and the increase of visitors was evident in the parking lots but not on the slopes. So much terrain and so many chairs, skiers and boarders can spread out and sometimes be skiing alone. Starbucks has broken ground on their new store on the corner of the Kalispell Center Mall parking lot. Another choice for coffee downtown and best of all, a drive through. I am noticing a ramp up in commercial construction in the valley lately. Kalispell Regional Hospital is finishing up a new surgical wing for one example. Another is the purchase of an old brick warehouse building across from the old train depot in Kalispell. There has been a major gutting of this building as well as dismantling of the old additions on the back. A pub sign was recently posted so that will be fun to watch proceed. It is great to drive around the Flathead Valley and see homes under construction and commercial projects happening. Construction has been the hardest industry hit by the economic slow down the past 5 years. Kalispell Regional Hospital is continuing it's expansion project. There are $12.4m in commercial projects on the slate besides the hospital. Hilton Homewood Suites has broken ground near the theaters in Hutton Ranch Plaza - where all the new retail is located in Kalispell. A 40 unit senior apartment complex comprised of 3 levels is projected on property downtown Kalispell.
