flathead valley: Weather Change Just in Time for First Day of Summer! - 06/20/14 06:12 AM
It has been a daunting week in the Flathead Valley. Between 2-6" of rain fell in 2 days setting a record and putting us well ahead of the normal average rain fall. Glacier National Park got 6-8" of rain in the lower elevations and 14-16" of SNOW in the higher elevations. I spent 2 days wearing rain gear just to go outside, unheard of.
Because the weather is now near 80 degrees with sunshine, flooding is being watched out for in "the park" as well as some trails being closed due to the overwhelming wetness on the ground. It is still … (0 comments)

flathead valley: The Spartan Race Coming Soon to the Flathead Valley - 04/19/14 01:00 AM
Last year it was held later but this year it is the weekend of May 10. Earlier and probably cooler. Last year it was HOT for the participants. Having volunteered last year and seen the course up close, better be ready for battle if you are participating! Here is the Spartan blog about returning to the valley with the friendliest people :)

flathead valley: Top 5 "South of the Border" for Spring Skiing - 03/11/14 06:49 AM
Everyone in the Flathead Valley knows, we are a big draw for Canadian skiers. Canadians come down here year round for a variety of reasons. Last week we had dinner at the Tupelo Grill in Whitefish. We were surrounded by fun loving Canadians. They kept us alive financially during the recession and still are pumping money into our economy. Skiing on Saturday, there were friendly "north of the border" folks parked all around us while were getting our ski gear on.
This article from a Calgary web site, names Whitefish Resort the only south of the Canadian border place to ski … (0 comments)

flathead valley: It's February 2014 in the Flathead Valley - 02/01/14 11:47 PM
Last weekend we stopped at Montana Coffee Traders for an Americano and headed to Whitefish for the Skijoring World Championship. We had not attended this event for a few years and were amazed at how it has grown! 3000 spectators attended on Saturday to watch skiers and snowboarders being pulled by riders on horses around a jump course. Fun and sometimes frightening to watch! National Georgraphic Traveler included the Whitefish Carnival and the Skijoring competition in it's best winter trips list.
This horse went down, lost his rider, but still finished and got a time:

flathead valley: A Personal Viewing of the Holiday Giving for Salvation Army - 12/14/13 09:37 PM
My husband and myself accompanied our daughter's Fresh Life Church small group Tuesday night to do some volunteering at the Salvation Army in Kalispell. We sorted donated toys onto age appropriate tables for the Dec. 20 "shopping" day. We learned how the Army pre-qualifies those that are receiving clothes, gifts, and toys for their families. So far, 900 people are going to be helped by the generous community we live in. We also got to peek in on the $ counters from the kettle donations. Volunteers meet nightly to count the money that came in during that day. The Salvation Army provides … (1 comments)

flathead valley: Getting Ready for Winter??? - 08/09/13 12:31 AM
Yep, gotta start think about ski season. Season pass sale is ending the end of Sept. skiwhitefish.com for more info. Good news on direct L.A. flights via Delta:
Sure it‘s August but are you dreaming of a Whitefish Christmas? This coming holiday season Delta Airlineswill offer a daily direct flight from LA to our home airport Glacier Park International Airport (FCA). Currently flights are available beginning December 21, 2013 through January 5, 2014.
It has been hot and dry but so far the Flathead Valley has escaped any fires but it is very dry everywhere in the state of Montana.
I attended a … (2 comments)

flathead valley: Eats in the Flathead and a Very Big Lake - 07/17/13 10:14 PM
Sunday we took a drive down the west side of Flathead Lake to West Shore State Park. What a gem! We were checking out which camp sites might be best for future camping trips. There is a great boat launch, picnic area on the lake and camp sites with views. Also, 2.5 miles of hiking trails. http://stateparks.mt.gov/west-shore/ This web site is great. Some sites can be reserved and there are many photos and descriptions of the camping spots.
This drive was followed by dinner at Tamarack Brewing Company in Lakeside. We got a table outside next to the creek and under the willows. … (0 comments)

flathead valley: Beautiful Time of Year in the Flathead Valley! - 07/01/13 05:39 AM
While I am not a fan of consuming canola oil, it sure is pretty when we have fields of yellow to look at this time of year.
We locals start to whine this time of year, but at the same time all the tourists are good for the local economy. Rv's are going through town to get to locations in the valley and Glacier National Park. Costco is jammed, especially right before the 4th of July. We went from spring to HOT! 90's this week but the whole west is in a heat wave. AC is not a requirement to live … (1 comments)

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Update: April 27, 2013 - 04/27/13 01:50 AM
Many choices of things to do this weekend.
Alpine Theater Project http://atpwhitefish.org/ is opening Les Miserables School Edition this weekend in Whitefish. Taking students from area schools and having them act in a well known play. We went to a school edition play a couple of years ago and were very impressed!

http://www.conradmansion.com/DeathByChocolate.html Conrad Mansion is a historical home in Kalispell. This fund raiser is great fun. A mystery play performed throughout the mansion with the guests participating.
I just signed up to volunteer at the Spartan Race which will take place overlooking Flathead Lake on May 11. http://www.spartanrace.com/ I have many crossfit friends signed … (0 comments)

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Update: March 28, 2013 - 03/28/13 06:00 AM
Lots going on in the valley for future road changes and developments. A developer got a closer to final approval for a 27 acre water ski lake development with surrounding home sites. The developer was given some changes but the Flathead County Planning Board to his original plan. This sort of subdivision is done in other areas and frankly, I don't see the point here in our valley. We have an abundance of lakes for water skiing on, unlike E. Montana or Arizona. Also, the season for water skiing is short. We will see how this concept flies.
The north end … (0 comments)

flathead valley: Glacier High School Basketball - 02/22/13 10:43 PM
What fun! We went to one of the playoff games last night. When did high schoolers start looking like they were 12 years old?? :) Kalispell has 2 high schools and this is the one in our district, also the best basketball team, dare I say. The game was very fun and the cheering section of students even more fun. Some of the guys were in shorts and fur coats leading the gang. Spinning a large beach ball when there were free throws from the Missoula team. The cheerleaders were tiny girls who did a number of acrobatic lifts and throws, … (0 comments)

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Update: January 30, 2013 - 01/30/13 10:14 AM
The weather man said tonight that we are past the date when we could get very cold weather. It has been a very mild winter actually. Little valley snow, no big storms are real cold weather. Supposed to be in the 40's again in a couple of days. I enjoyed x-country skiing in my fields a few days ago. Sun, good snow, great view. Whitefish Mountain Resort has received 29 INCHES in the last 7 days! Wow. It was time. Some great powder in the sun yesterday.
Coming back from Crossfit Libertas at 8am this morning, there was a lot of … (0 comments)

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Update: January 20, 2013 - 01/19/13 05:37 AM
Sun, and more sun!! While the valley has had a smattering of fog and clouds, Big Mountain has been in the sun. It is great to head up to ski and watch the car thermometer rise as we drive up higher in elevation. The valley can be 10 degrees and the summit of Whitefish Resort will be 23 degrees. Nice to sit on a high speed chair and get warmer instead of colder as you climb the hill.
See the video below of the happenings from today on the mountain. Those telemark skiers skinning up the mountain are incredible athletes in … (1 comments)

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Real Estate Update January 3, 2013 - 01/03/13 04:10 AM
It is all about skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort on a day like today. The photos below say it all. Music playing when we loaded on the first lift was "I can see for miles and miles and miles" - so appropriate. The visibility sign at the chair said "awesome". We rode up with a guy from New Zealand and who was taking photos the whole way. He moved to the Flathead Valley 6 years ago after searching all over the Northwest for a place to call home. He said where else can you find a ski hill, a national park, … (1 comments)

flathead valley: A Fresh Life Christmas from the Flathead Valley, MT - 12/24/12 11:27 PM
Our Pastor's 5 year old daughter died in his arms 4 days prior to this Christmas Message. He preached through his grief as his daughter who died from a severe asthma attack would have wanted him to. Watch Levi Lusko preach and hear what Christmas is really about.

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Real Estate Update December 20, 2012 - 12/19/12 10:36 PM
All righty then, I will NOT be skiing today. Had planned on it as the weather was supposed to be awesome, but there is now a winter weather advisory and the skiwhitefish.com site that sends me auto emails on ski reports, just said the wind is howling at the summit 20-30 mph, no thanks! We went up yesterday morning and stayed on Chair 2 which is finally open. Fast runs, no people, good snow. Stayed there as the summit still looked fogged in. From the valley in the afternoon, the mountain was clearly visible so the clouds had passed. Had peekaboo … (0 comments)

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Update: November 21, 2012 - 11/20/12 09:04 PM
On this day before Thanksgiving, we step back and count our blessings for living in such an amazing corner of the country. While it rained yesterday, promises for a LOT of snow are in the forecast starting tonight. Ski season is a mere 2 weeks away and we are praying for lots of big dumps at Whitefish Mountain Resort!
There is a feeling of economic resurgence in the Flathead Valley. We stopped in at Brennigan's Irish Pub Friday and it was packed at 5:30pm. Obviously we weren't going to get a table for dinner, so headed down the street to Split … (0 comments)

flathead valley: October 18th Weekend Events in the Flathead Valley - 10/18/12 04:57 AM
First from last weekend; I went with my daughter to the Flathead CrossFit gym last Saturday morning to participate in a breast cancer fund raiser. The organizer is a CrossFit lady who battled and won breast cancer. Client and friend Dr. Mellissa Hulvat was present to lift weights. Melissa is the breast surgeon in NW Montana. We got a quick how-to on the clean and jerk methodology. Then there were 6 heats of 8 people each trying to do 30 clean and jerks as quickly as possible but within 8 minutes. I needed heavier weights so completed very quickly. There were some … (1 comments)

flathead valley: Whitefish Mountain Resort #11 - 10/16/12 05:18 AM
Out of the top 30 ski resorts in Ski Magazine, Whitefish is #11, AND has the lowest priced lift tickets in the group.  Skiers are polled for this ranking. Big Mountain went up 11 spots from last year. Pretty cool. This has been my home mountain for over 25 years. Long before we moved to the Flathead Valley 17 years ago, we would drive or take the train yearly from Seattle to ski in Whitefish. Our kids learned to ski on this hill. I always feel like I am on vacation when I am sitting on the chair riding up to … (0 comments)

flathead valley: Flathead Valley Real Estate Update October 2, 2012 - 10/02/12 06:46 AM
Pretty exciting and a vote for an improving economy in the Flathead Valley. Cabelas tracks catalog orders and it looks like this valley deserves an actual store. Cabelas to begin construction next spring targeting a fall opening, hmm maybe timed for hunting season??
The Daily Interlake had a very interesting article on beer breweries in NW Montana. It seems we are 2nd per capita in the nation for micro breweries. Flathead Lake Brewery in Bigfork is opening in the former large building of the bowling alley in town. Their business is expanding and they needed more room. Desert Mountain Brewing is getting ready to open … (0 comments)
