The numbers are in, skier visits were up 7% for 2013/2014 ski season. Season passes accounted for about 1/2 of these visits. It was a tremendous year for snow and the increase of visitors was evident in the parking lots but not on the slopes. So much terrain and so many chairs, skiers and boarders can spread out and sometimes be skiing alone. Starbucks has broken ground on their new store on the corner of the Kalispell Center Mall parking lot. Another choice for coffee downtown and best of all, a drive through. Everyone in the Flathead Valley knows, we are a big draw for Canadian skiers. Canadians come down here year round for a variety of reasons. Last week we had dinner at the Tupelo Grill in Whitefish. We were surrounded by fun loving Canadians. They kept us alive financially during the recession and still are pumping money into our economy. Skiing on Saturday, there were friendly "north of the border" folks parked all around us while were getting our ski gear on. The valley got about 6" in the last 24 hrs but the ski hill got dumped on. I skiied 2x this week and there is so much powder and no people, probably today will be a busy day though.

Whitefish Mountain Resort is opening the entire ski hill for opening day tomorrow! We had a big dump on Monday and even Hellroaring basin will be open which we usually have to wait a few weeks for. So you can ski from top to bottom opening day. The downside is that we are in a record breaking cold spell, so coverup any exposed skin and put on the woolies! Out of the top 30 ski resorts in Ski Magazine, Whitefish is #11, AND has the lowest priced lift tickets in the group. Skiers are polled for this ranking. Big Mountain went up 11 spots from last year. Pretty cool. This has been my home mountain for over 25 years. Long before we moved to the Flathead Valley 17 years ago, we would drive or take the train yearly from Seattle to ski in Whitefish. Well, I guess winter is here. Beautiful sunshine on the new snow today after off and on blizzard type weather the last couple of days. Whitefish Mountain Resort opens December 3 for skiing so getting some nice assistance from the weather. From the valley floor, the slopes are clearly covered in white. Saturday morning drive into Whitefish to get a fleece jacket for the little house dog. He didn't look kindly at the cold weather when he needed to head outside to do his duty. Holiday activities in the Flathead Valley are picking up speed, see a list below. Took a drive on the Kalispell bypass (alternate route) last weekend. Speeds up the drive from the north to the south. No traffic lights but roundabouts control access and exit. Had a wonderful dinner at the Whitefish Lake Restaurant Sunday night. The atmosphere cannot be beat. Log inside, roaring fire, low lights, and great food. Reserve early for Christmas plans. Another restaurant in Whitefish, Latitude 48 on Central downtown, good value and good food. I am looking out my window on this cold and windy Saturday at the remnants of snow on the roof. Wind chill is brrr! Blanketed the horses, shut the chickens in, left the heat lamp on for the goats and plan on staying inside! Kalispell bypass officially opened this week. After decades of discussions the south end starting south of town and ending at Hwy 2, is completed. I frankly thought this would never happen in my lifetime, but there you go, it exists. Weather couldn't be better! Covering tomatoes at night but clear sunny and warm days. Winter may be around the corner but we are enjoying every bit of outdoor activities we can squeeze in. I showed my Swan Hill Drive listing in Bigfork yesterday, incredible day to enjoy the views of the Swan Range. I feel so blessed to be able to share the Flathead Valley with locals and out of state buyers alike. North Valley School of Music had a fund raising concert a couple of nights ago in Whitefish.
