whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: July 15, 2009 - 07/14/09 11:00 PM
Summer weather is returning today after 2 days of badly needed rain. Hopefully that dose of moisture will keep the forest fires at bay this year.
Hiking in Glacier National Park: We did the Apgar Lookout trail on Sunday. Felt like quite an accomplishment! 2.8 miles of 1900' elevation gain. Awesome views from the top made it worth while. Photo below. Planning a camping trip to Many Glacier where the peaks are amazing viewed when hiking.
Farmers Market in Whitefish last night was great. Good music, friends wandering around and fresh produce.
Sailing Saturday a.m. in Dayton on Flathead Lake. Perfect … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Weekly Update: June 23, 2009 - 06/22/09 11:39 PM
Big News: 2 grocery store openings in 1 week! If you don't live in our valley, this is indeed big news. Safeway in Whitefish has been closed since last September to do a huge remodel and expansion. I visited the store yesterday. The highlight for me was the fresh fish section. Starbucks is inside along with a cafe. Missing: natural foods section. Super One is opening up downtown Kalispell this week. This is within walking distance to my office so very handy. I can count on this store for great produce and a big natural foods section.

Whitefish Farmer's Market: a not to be missed Tuesday night event in the summer! Live jazz, good food, vendors of everything to make the evening fun. A great atmosphere to shop in and just enjoy a warm summer eveing. Afterwards, we had dinner at Latitude 48 - wonderful.
2 not to be missed local products at the market: Flathead Valley grown hydroponic tomatoes and butterhead lettuce; The Back Home Bakery "just like France" bread products and the most awesome croissants this side of the Atlantic! The bakery is tucked away west of Kalispell in the hills of West Valley. … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: April 12, 2009 - 04/12/09 07:58 AM
Happy Easter everyone! After attending church in Whitefish with friends, went to brunch at the Grouse Mountain Lodge, awesome! Surprised to see snow on the golf course still that the lodge sits on.
Weekend ranch happenings: horse riding, greenhouse growing, bee hives put together and painted, inventory of fences that need replacing (ugh!), hoses and patio furniture back out for the summer. Wonderful weather to get chores done. A funny think happend with my youngest Golden this week. Maggie has become used to walking on the swimming pool ice all winter. Well, this week she went swimming instead with … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: February 6, 2009 - 02/06/09 02:41 AM
Winter has been anyone's guess this year. Alternating unusual cold with big snows, then unusally warm. At least Big Mtn is still getting some new snow. Whitefish winter carnival is this weekend with the penguin plunge into Whitefish Lake on Saturday. Have a friend participating to raise money for the Special Olympics. Don't think I could ever do that! Good cause though.
I own 14 rental properties in the Flathead Valley. All of a sudden I have a lot of well qualified rental applicants in the last 2 weeks. I try to never have vacancies in the winter but … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: January 1, 2009 - 01/01/09 02:34 AM
     Downhill, x-country, First Night Flathead

Went up to the Whitefish Mountain Resort on Tuesday with MANY others. Really nice day with new snow. Warm, and the sun even made an appearance. Noticed many tourists in the lift line by their conversation. Also noticed what were wide skis when I bought them 10 years ago, now looked like cross country skis. Stopped at Sportsman Haus in Whitefish on the way home and got a great deal on new K2 skis that should make skiing really fun. Plan on testing them on the slopes this weekend.
Cross Country skiing got some … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: December 28, 2008 - 12/28/08 01:31 PM
Christmas 2008 is past and New Year 2009 is on it's way. We have seen a LOT of snow in the last few days, yeah!!  I went cross country skiing at the Whitefish Golf Course Friday. The trails were freshly groomed, it was lightly snowing, and I warmed up quickly. It was a cardio workout day for me, so I wore my heart monitor and ipod and skied away. What a fun way to get in that workout, and trust me, the heart rate definitely is easily maintained for 30 minutes. I learned the camelback for water is not good, … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update for December 10, 2008 - 12/10/08 03:17 AM
Finally! Snow has fallen on the Whitefish Mountain Resort with more promised this week. 2 runs are open on the backside of the mountain. Got a dusting in the valley last night that looks very Christmas like.
City of Kalispell is working on a possible parking garage downtown. That would surely help with shopper and business parking issues. My office is downtown so I have the privilege of walking everywhere from my office without the worry of parking, but I know how annoying it is for everyone else.
Flathead County is actively having residents such as myself, name … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Weekly Update: December 1, 2008 - 12/01/08 12:31 PM
Where's the snow??? Big Mountain has a dusting at the summit and the valley has seen some flakes but where is all the white stuff? We are supposed to see some fall tomorrow but when oh when will ski season start this year is anyone's guess.
Being from Seattle, snow was a dreaded word. Even the threat caused wide spread panic and often the flakes never materialized. Here in northwest Montana, from hunters to skiers, citizens start grumbling about the absence of snow. Apparently hunting suffered since snow is necessary for tracking the animals. We had some nice venison last night … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update for November 14, 2008 - 11/13/08 11:59 PM
Whitefish has hired a new City Manager. He comes from Colorado. Kalispell has started the search for a new manager.
We have had a couple of very cold mornings and this is one of them. Cold this time of year is between 20-30 degrees. It is funny how the concept of cold changes during the seasons. This could feel warm in January! The pay off is sun and clear skies.
Hunters are hoping for snow. They may have had some in the higher elevations the last couple of days. The hunter check station west of Kalispell was very … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update for November 7, 2008 - 11/06/08 09:13 PM
The elections are finally over! Montana re-elected the Democratic governor, Flathead County Commissioner race is decided with former Sheriff Dupont being the new Commissioner and many state and federal decisions were made. It is a challenging time to be a politician and I can only hope that those elected are up to such a challenge.
Snow on the slopes! A few flakes have fallen on the valley floor and the slopes of Big Mountain are visibly white.  Temps have been mild with a hard frost just occurring this week. Hard to say what the winter will be like but … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley update September 12, 2008 - 09/12/08 02:18 AM
Weather couldn't be better! Covering tomatoes at night but clear sunny and warm days. Winter may be around the corner but we are enjoying every bit of outdoor activities we can squeeze in.
I showed my Swan Hill Drive listing in Bigfork yesterday, incredible day to enjoy the views of the Swan Range. I feel so blessed to be able to share the Flathead Valley with locals and out of state buyers alike.
North Valley School of Music had a fund raising concert a couple of nights ago in Whitefish. The school brought in a famous cowboy singer … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley update August 5, 2008 - 08/05/08 12:22 AM
The City of Whitefish had their third strike against the city keeping control of the "donut" area within 2 miles of the city limits. The courts again sided with Flathead County. The city is pursuing the matter in the higher courts.
I am including a photo I took last week on a day long horse ride in the Great Bear Wilderness. It was a great day and we were very thankful our friend brought his saw since a tree blew down while we were in the wilderness and blocked the trail going out. A little excitement with the horses … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: July 24, 2008 - 07/24/08 08:18 AM
Wow! 400+ at the Event at Rebecca Farms this weekend. 4 former competitors from the US and Canada are competing in horse events at the Olympics this year. I am volunteering to be a jump judge at the cross country event. Horse trailers have been pulling through town all week heading to this big qualifying 3 day event. It is free to attend and you are allowed to sit near the jumps to watch. Dressage is today and then 2 days of cross country and Sunday is stadium jumping. Very exciting!  Whitefish is hosting a major fly fishing expo this … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: 7-18-2008 - 07/18/08 07:27 AM
"It was a quiet week" in the Flathead Valley. Ala Garrison Keller and his Lake Wobegon monologue. Everyone is out enjoying summer. Houses are being shown and buyers are showing signs of coming back to life. Our team has closed on 4 sales in the last 5 weeks so feeling pretty good about the market. Seeing a lot of price reductions, so it continues to be a great market to get out there and buy in!    The interchange on Hwy 93 and Church Drive is starting to look like something. That will be great for traffic flow around the new Silverbrook … (0 comments)

whitefish: Flathead Valley Update: July 10, 2008 - 07/10/08 02:12 AM
It was a scenic ride along the east-side of the Hungry Horse Reservoir. We had an elk walk out of the woods and stand in the trail in front of our horses. Have never seen an elk on a trail ride before! The reservoir was beautiful down below us. We seemed to be the first on this trail for the season. Many large trees were down from winter storms across the trail, in fact one was so large we turned back. Did another ride with  a friend this week at Herron Park. We climbed up the hill (or the horses did) … (0 comments)

whitefish: July 4th Week in the Flathead Valley - 07/02/08 08:57 AM
Wow, what a storm blew through the valley last night! Sheet lightening, LOTS of rain and some blustery winds. Hope the bad stuff is over and we can enjoy July 4th.     Got our hay crop in earlier so it was in safe and dry for the winter. Other folks weren't so lucky. I still see a lot of baled hay sitting around in fields in the Flathead.     Going to the Sun highway is finally plowed and open for the summer. Latest year that I can remember. Shuttles will be the main mode of transportation as the highway through … (0 comments)
