House Speaker John Boehner stated on Monday that he planning to hold a hard line on debt negotiations. The following are his demands: expending cuts in exchange for support to lift the debt ceiling and the cuts will be greater in scale than the ceiling increase. According to Boehner, “without significant spending cuts and the way we use Americans’ money, there will be no debt limit increase. It was said that the Americans are deleveraging from consumer arrears, but a nearer look exposes that this may be not the case. Any decrease in consumer debt may be more due to defaults than actual belt reduction.
According to this story at the Wall Street Journal over the weekend, the substantial diminution in outstanding credit over the past few years is because of those charge offs, not consumers excavating their way out of debt by paying down their balances.
