31 days of may challenge: Remembering At Quantico National Cemetery Memorial Day 2011 - 05/30/11 04:28 AM
This Memorial Day Arthur and I went to Quantico National Cemetery to honor those who have served defending our freedoms. He also has two friends interred there. The microphone was off as we passed the Avenue of Flags entering and leaving. We had the mike on as we passed several of the grave sites - the quiet except for the sound of the wind and birds is what makes these resting places of our veterans special.
On Saturday we had the pleasure of attending an outdoor concert at the Marine Museum performed by a newly formed military group "Band Of Americas … (10 comments)

31 days of may challenge: Do Your Listings Have Their Own Business Cards? - 05/28/11 09:10 AM
About 14 or 15 years ago we developed a business card for each of our listings. We gave many copies to the property owner to distribute to friends, co-workers, etc. We did the same as well as passing them out at meetings where agents exchanged business cards the front of the card had a photo of the housethe back had the address, price and our contact informationSince our color printer at that time was an inkjet we laminated each card to prevent water damage to the color.
We still produce those cards, but the process is much faster and far less expensive. … (40 comments)

31 days of may challenge: Lake Ridge Woodbridge VA Only Has Rolling Hills, But - 05/27/11 10:30 AM

We have Mountain Laurel throughout Lake Ridge. It's easy to do when you consider we live in a 4,400 acre subdivision and 1,200 acres of it are heavily wooded common ground. The blossoms above are on Mountain Laurel just beyond the edge of our lot line.

Lake Ridge is one of the 10 largest subdivisions in the US - it is home to 38,000 people living in 7,000 residences. In addition to its' own wooded lots and common area it sits along the shores of the 2,100 acre Occoquan Reservoir - great for flora and fishing. Actually, it is also a … (15 comments)

31 days of may challenge: It Took 35 Years To Get The Experience - It Has Been "Internet Adapted" - 05/26/11 02:30 PM
When you've been in the real estate business for 35 years (36 in July) you realize that many of those things you have done years ago have application today and in the future.
Sometime in the mid 90's my husband and I developed a comprehensive in-home listing packet, We learned after many years buyers who were tired mentally took the porch from one home, the garage from a second one and the kitchen from a third home and called us wanting to make an offer on a "home" they had not seen and may not even exist.
Our packet was and … (22 comments)

31 days of may challenge: People No Longer Ride The Rails In Boxcars, Especially To Florida - 05/21/11 01:33 PM

The trip starts every day at 4:00 PM when the Auto Train departs from the Lorton Auto Train Terminal on a non-stop trip to Florida. A location outside Washington was necessary since the auto carriers will not fit in the Washington, DC railway tunnels. The service has been operating at this location since 1971.
From the time you turn your car over to the attendant, enter the terminal, board the train to your assigned seat and the deisel locomotive pulls away from the station the sense of anticipation escalates.

31 days of may challenge: Have You Tried Recycling Your Photos? One May Even Get Featured - 05/20/11 01:22 AM

31 days of may challenge: Golf Comes In Two Sizes In Lake Ridge, Woodbridge VA - 05/19/11 03:15 AM
Small and Large
One of the unique advantages of living in Lake Ridge is that Prince William County very thoughtfully built a park and marina within the subdivision.
As you can see they even added miniature golf for people at my level of expertise. The Lake Ridge golf course is one of four public courses in the county.

Since not everyone in Lake Ridge is a golfer, children and adults can enjoy one or all of our five swimming pools and a Sprayground for little Lake Ridgers.

There is more good news about Lake Ridge Lake Ridge is one of the ten largest subdivisions … (12 comments)

A few weeks ago I listed a custom, all brick rambler that is very competitively priced in a neighborhood of cookie cutter homes. My prediction that it would receive heavy traffic was absolutely "on the money".
Since the home is vacant I went over to it the first night (Friday) to check security.Over half of the lights were onThe back door was open, not unlocked, but open.On the second day (Saturday) Arthur checked the house late afternoon and found some agent's client threw a soiled diaper in … (242 comments)

Those of us on the East Coast know Spring has arrived when we see the Flowering Dogwood in the white, pink or green varieties. Just when we think Spring is over, about a month later, along comes the Kousa Dogwood shown above
It starts with leaves and then the blooms which are pointed when compared to the rounded blooms of the Flowering Dogwood.

31 days of may challenge: When Your First Time Buyers Say, "No HOA" - 05/12/11 11:29 PM
You're out showing homes to a first time buyer couple. They've told you they prefer homes where there are no homeowner's association. Since they'll be moving from a small apartment and will be spending money to furnish their new home they prefer not having the additional expense of HOA fees.
You drive up to a little Cape Cod with dormers, picket fence with roses, fireplace and an American flag. Husband and wife both announce, "This is it" and you haven't even shown the interior yet. The interior is quaint with lots of cute nooks and crannies plus a built-in corner hutch … (128 comments)
