local expert: Fort Hunt Park Home To American History - 10/20/08 01:40 AM

Originally, Fort Hunt (Sheridan's Point in Washington's Day) served as a fort to defend the settlers against Indians in the 17th century.
Nowadays Fort Hunt Park on a summer plays host to several hundred picnickers.  On Sunday evenings there are free concerts.  There are large and medium size shelters that can be reserved for private functions
That is a far cry from its' original and subsequent purposes.
In the latter part of the 19th century gun batteries were installed to defend Washington, D.C. during the Spanish American War along with Fort Washington in Maryland. It served for a brief time as an ROTC training camp for African … (2 comments)

local expert: Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens - 10/19/08 08:15 AM

For eight years our family lived within walking distance of the Mount Vernon Estate.  As we walked along Old Mount Vernon Road we passed the gate that provided an unobstructed view of the mansion identical to the one on the left.  It was also a short bicycle ride to the George Washington Parkway and a relaxing trip along the Potomac River into Olde Towne - we tried to visualize George Washington making the same trip on horseback
There have been some changes since we moved out of Mount Vernon in 1982, but they have not been dramatic since the area was fairly well developed when we … (8 comments)

local expert: BUS - A MAJOR PLAYER IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA TRANSPORTATION - 02/28/08 01:16 PM

Every day thousands of Northern Virginiansuse   TRAINS     METRORAIL   and   CARPOOLS to commute to work. Since these systems are modern, efficient, well maintained and cost effective they enjoy continued growth.

Virginia Railway Express, METRORAIL and Carpools are not always easily accessible to commuters and they most certainly are  not practical for intracity travel

HERE COMES THE BUS !!!!  We have numerous buslines meeting the needs of commuters and those needing  "around town" service.

local expert: SPRINGFIELD AIRPORT - PROGRESS RAN OVER THE RUNWAY - 02/25/08 10:01 AM

This is the 5th in my series of reports on extinct Northern Virginia airports
At the end of World War II Carl Allen opened the Springfield Airport with a 2,200 foot unpaved runway.  In addition to providing refueling and other services he planned to open a flying school to serve the postwar interest in flying by veterans under the GI Bill.
One of the mechanics at the airport was Charlie Kulp, The Flying Farmer of BEALETON VIRGINIA FLYING CIRCUS fame.  At age 82 he flew his last barnstorming flight in 2007.
The owner and his wife were killed in an airplane crash in 1951 and the … (6 comments)

local expert: CROSSROADS AIRPORT - IT ACHIEVED A "HIGHER" USE - 02/25/08 02:33 AM

This is the 4th in my series on extinct Northern Virginia Airfields.
In 1941 E.C. Germain purchased a 350 acre site along Route 7 just east of Bailey's Crossroad.  He operated the Washington Air Charter Service and planned a 3,500 foot unpaved runway.
The airport began to achieve greater commercial success when it was purchased by the Benn brothers in 1946.  They opened a flight training school for GI's wanting to learn to fly using their GI Bill benefits.  Eventually, the name was changed to Washington-Virginia Airport.

local expert: WHERE DID THE WOODBRIDGE AIRPORT GO? - 02/22/08 07:32 AM

The Woodbridge Airport opened for business in 1959.  At the time it was in the "middle of nowhere" on the north side of Old Bridge Road just east of Smoketown Road.It was considered a difficult airport since there were trees at either end of the 2,246' runway with a substantial dip in the middle.  Many pilot instructors would not let their students attempt a landing.
Over time suburbia encroached with the development of Lake Ridge, Westridge and Old Bridge Estates.  There were many times when I would be showing homes in the area and as I was passing the airport a … (6 comments)

local expert: FISCHER'S HARDWARE IN SPRINGFIELD VA - 01/02/08 04:58 AM

This is the fourth in my series about family owned and operated hardware stores in Northern Virginia.
My first association with Fischer's was in the early '80s.  Our family enjoyed camping and we were constantly on the lookout for items that would make our stay in the woods a bit more enjoyable.  Fischer's was the only place we could find Strike Anywhere Matches.  Since then I have looked to them for antiquing finishes - they have an exceptionally fine inventory of refinishing supplies.
Opened in 1953, Fischer's remains a family owned business.  Old fashioned, friendly service, wide selection and … (5 comments)

local expert: RIPPON LODGE circa 1725 - 12/30/07 08:01 AM

Rippon Lodge is thought to be the oldest colonial home in Prince William County and quite possibly in Northern Virginia.
It was built about 1725 by Richard Black-burn of Ripon, an old cathedral town in England.  Colonel Thomas Blackburn, his son, was a contemporary and fought with George Washington.  In that period the families of Mount and Rippon were on very intimate terms.  George Washington even made reference in his diary to overnight stays at Rippon Lodge with Mrs. Washington.
Its' ownership changed over the years, but was last owned by Admiral Richard Blackburn Black, another descendant of the … (4 comments)

local expert: FAMILY OWNERSHIP BY THREE GENERATIONS OVER 71 YEARS - 12/19/07 07:48 AM

On December 16, The Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger ran a cover story about the J.E.Rice Hardware Store which is located in the Manassas Shopping Center on Mathis Avenue.
Their saying is, "If we don't have it you don't need it or they don't make it."
J.E.Rice, Sr. opened the store in 1936 at another location and opened this store in1957.  The founder's three grandchildren still operate the store which stocks in excess of 35,000 items. One of the reasons for the store's continued success is the willingness of the owners and staff to provide reliable service.  It … (2 comments)

local expert: THEY'RE STILL WORKIN' ON THE RAILROAD - 11/04/07 09:01 PM

Manassas has a rich heritage and the rairoad has played an important part in that heritage.  The Orange and Alexandria Railroad from Alexandria to Gordonsville was completed in 1850.  Both sides in the Civil War coveted control of the railroad line and much of the track structure was destroyed.
Over the years different companies owned the system, but in 1894 it was acquired by the Southern Railway System.  When Norfolk and Western Railroad merged with Southern Railway in 1982 the name was changed to Norfolk Southern.  The snow covered station has not changed over the years as photos below will reveal.
