lorton homes: Tractors or Houses - Makes No Difference - Rehab Can Turn "Swell" Into "Awesome" - 09/16/09 08:18 AM

The tractor on the left still rusts away in a field in western Prince William County The tractor at the right is the identical model, but it has been faithfully restored. The home below in Lorton, Fairfax County VA sat deteriorating for years.  It is owned by a local family who stripped it down to essential "bones" and, as you can see, is giving it new life.
Too often we discard or knock down anything that has lost its' original lustre
Both the tractors and house are from the period in America when things were "Swell".   However, love and dedication … (15 comments)

lorton homes: Speechless Sundays - Phew, That Was Close! - 08/23/09 08:29 AM

I first snapped a photo of this old Lorton home/general store/service station/newspaper plant in 2007. It had been occupied until a year before - as you can see it was in extremely poor condition. The photo at the lower left was taken in 2008 as renovations started. Last week I drove through Lorton again and snapped the photo at the lower right. The interesting aspect is that it is at the intersection of two well traveled Lorton roads - I would have thought it would be restored commercially, but I'll keep checking to see what happens.

lorton homes: Hallowing Point, Lorton, Virginia Market Report - 11/18/08 07:25 AM
Hallowing Point is the epitome of living on the Potomac River in Northern Virginia.  The custom homes are on large lots with fantastic vistas of the Potomac River and Maryland.  The community has its' own park and boat launching facility right on the river.

lorton homes: Gunston Manor - Don't Forget The Milk On Your Way Home - 11/13/08 08:03 AM
Gunston Manor is unlike any other Northern Virginia waterfront community.  It was developed in 1929 as a weekend camping retreat.  There are no sidewalks. sewers, very limited homeowner's association rules and a blend of newand then and old homes.  You'll see cottages with no more than 1,000 square feet of living space overlooking the Potomac River.
Gunston Manor has been home to some families for three or four generations.  Why?  They can kayak, fish, hike and water ski without ever leaving home. Due to its' proximity to the Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge you live with a wide variety of birds and animals

Spring Hill is a community of Over 55 Homes being built on the Laurel Hill section of Lorton Prison land that was released for residential construction by Fairfax County.  Title to the land was passed to the county when the prison was closed.  They are, of course, one level homes with garages - seniors won't have to climb stairs or scrape ice off windshields.  It is a fenced and gated community to maximize security.  As the photos show there is a minimum amount of land for the homeowners to maintain, but there are broad open areas adding to the overall appeal.

lorton homes: Lorton Prison - Checkered Past, But Bright Future - 08/19/08 01:11 AM
Initially, the Lorton correctional facility was supposed to house prisoners in an environment where fresh air and hard work would enhance inmate rehabilitation.   As a result, much of the more than 3,000 acres was used for the production of beef, dairy products and vegetables.  Additionally, many of the compound's brick buildings were built by inmates.  More than 6 years would pass from the time the prison was closed in 1998 until title was passed to Fairfax County and public and private development could be started.
The new South County Secondary School opened in 2006.  It is conveniently located near the residential … (2 comments)
