manassas: Be Careful, The Deer Will Be Out In Full Force - 09/27/11 05:45 AM

Over the past year we have had a substantial increase in the deer population in Prince William County. The Mamas and the Papas were very busy.

Acorns are an important component of their diet over the winter. The oak trees are not producing the normal crop of acorns this year.

The deer are not in danger of starvation. However, the shortage will force them to leave the woods in search of other food sources. They will be on the road shoulders and crossing the road creating a hazard to drivers as well as themselves.
We are blessed to have … (0 comments)

manassas: It's A Simple Law To Keep Children Safe - 09/20/11 02:42 AM

School is now open in Prince William County and the rest of the country. You would think all drivers would realize and respect the purpose of school speed signs and school bus lights is to protect our children.
My husband and I live very close to three schools in Lake Ridge. They are all within eyesight of each other on two intersecting streets.
There are more school speed limit signs with fashing lights than you can imagine. It never fails that some drivers (not necessarily teens) think they are a call to speed.
Read the sign - the school zone speed limit in … (2 comments)

manassas: Ashland, Manassas, Prince William County Kids Are Back In School - 09/04/10 04:18 AM
Tuesday, September 7, 2010 marks the opening of the new school year here in Prince William County. While many of the school commuters are seasoned veterans there is a group of "newbies" every year. However, they all deserve your respect and consideration. The school zone speed limit lights have been on this week to remind us of the upcoming beginning of the school year. The law requires you to stop behind a school bus when their red lights flash.School crossing guards will be out in full force every morning and afternoon at critical intersections. They are there for one reason only … (9 comments)

manassas: Wellington, City of Manassas Kiids Are Back In School - 09/04/10 03:27 AM
On Tuesday September 7, 2010 schools in the City of Manassas will open for the beginning of the new school year. Both the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and common sense require us to take extreme caution as children of all ages start or return to theirstudies
Although Virginia law requires a speed of 25 MPH when warning lights are flashing at a school location there are exceptions. For example, the speed limit has been reduced to 15 MPH at Grace Metz Middle on Wellington Road.
Police patrols will be increased in school locations and both school bus drivers and school crossing … (4 comments)

manassas: Speechless Sundays - When Faulty Electronics Weren't An Issue - 03/28/10 12:11 AM
Cars, trucks and fire engines have come a long way since this 1929 Ford Model A first responded to a fire alarm. Since this one is a fire engine it had all the necessary "bells and whistles" that were available at the time. Obviously, cars and trucks are much more comfortable and "intelligent" than this antique. One thing is certain, though. There probably isn't a 2010 vehicle that will bring smiles to parade watchers 81 years from now since its' computer software will malmalfunctionfunction just prior to the big event.

manassas: Old Manassas Courthouse Prince William County Virginia - 10/04/08 07:05 AM
Prince William County has always played a major role in the development of Virginia and our country continuing to this day.  The courthouse featured in this report was the fifth such building in the county.  The first four courthouses were in Woodbridge, Cedar Run, Dumfries and BRENTSVILLE.  Manassas was at the junction of two area railroads (the reason for two Civil War battles) and grew rapidly after the cessation of hostilities.  That accelerated growth made it feasible to move the county government westward again. The new courthouse was opened at the corner of Lee and Grant Avenues in 1893.  It continued … (0 comments)

manassas: FAMILY OWNERSHIP BY THREE GENERATIONS OVER 71 YEARS - 12/19/07 07:48 AM

On December 16, The Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger ran a cover story about the J.E.Rice Hardware Store which is located in the Manassas Shopping Center on Mathis Avenue.
Their saying is, "If we don't have it you don't need it or they don't make it."
J.E.Rice, Sr. opened the store in 1936 at another location and opened this store in1957.  The founder's three grandchildren still operate the store which stocks in excess of 35,000 items. One of the reasons for the store's continued success is the willingness of the owners and staff to provide reliable service.  It … (2 comments)

manassas: WE'VE GOT TWO CENTER STREETS - 11/26/07 06:29 AM
One of them is in Old Town Manassas and one of them is in Occoquan. Since they are both incorporated that doesn't confuse the county government.
More importantly, they are both very historical places and their Center Streets are loaded with quaint shops and inviting restaurants. Typical of most "Old Towns" you can stroll from one end to the other rather quickly unless you detour through the shops and eateries. The pictures below were taken in Manassas on Center Street.

And these are not your mother's librarians.  For the past two years the Prince William County Public Library Cartwheelers have been the "showstoppers" at local parades.  This is one of the many methods Library Director and fellow Rotarian Dick Murphy uses to publicize the library system.  They do not ride Harleys like Shriners or mounted police units, but they get a lot of enthusiastic applause as they do their routine.  The library system is constantly improving its' services to include online availability of books and reference material.  Our county's libraries are a widely used resource.  This photo was snapped at the Lake Ridge Old … (14 comments)

manassas: THEY'RE STILL WORKIN' ON THE RAILROAD - 11/04/07 09:01 PM

Manassas has a rich heritage and the rairoad has played an important part in that heritage.  The Orange and Alexandria Railroad from Alexandria to Gordonsville was completed in 1850.  Both sides in the Civil War coveted control of the railroad line and much of the track structure was destroyed.
Over the years different companies owned the system, but in 1894 it was acquired by the Southern Railway System.  When Norfolk and Western Railroad merged with Southern Railway in 1982 the name was changed to Norfolk Southern.  The snow covered station has not changed over the years as photos below will reveal.

manassas: Was it Manassas or Bull Run? - 10/26/07 05:14 AM

If you were in the Confederate Army you fought in the 1st Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1862 and the 2nd Battle of Manassas from August 28, 1862 to August 30, 1862.
However, if you fought in the Union Army these were the Battles of Bull Run.  The Confederacy named battles after nearby towns while the Union forces named the battles after nearby bodies of water.
1st Manassas was the first major battle of the Civil War.  In either case, the Confederacy won both battles, but the second battle was the most decisive.  The notable names leading the Confederate … (0 comments)

manassas: Wild Turkey or Virginia Gentleman? - 09/10/07 08:03 AM
Many people think bourbon must be made in Kentucky just as Vidalia onions must be grown in Vidalia, GA.  Wrong, wrong, wrong !!!  The folks in Lynchburg, TN know that, but they are not the only ones who make bourbon outside the state of Kentucky, because bourbon is also made in Fredericksburg, VA. Virginia Gentleman Bourbon is produced by the A. Smith Bowman Distillery
Although the distillery is located in Fredericksburg it started producing bourbon in Northern Virginia in what is now Reston, Virginia.  Adam Smith Bowman purchased a dairy farm in that section of Fairfax County in 1927,  He went into … (1 comments)

manassas: "BIG YELLOW" is Coming!!!! - 08/30/07 05:57 AM
For some of you it has already happened.  However, for most of us on Tuesday September 4th BIG YELLOW will start delivering people's "heirs and assigns" to and from school.  Being careful with our driving anytime is just another opportunity for us to serve our community responsibly.  Of course, BIG YELLOW alerts us to this at the start of the new school year
