prince william county things to do: It Was A Lovely Day For A Picnic in Manassas, Virginia
- 08/21/13 01:51 AM
But A Sad Day For America The day was July 21, 1861 (150 years ago) in Manassas Junction, Virginia. The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter on 4/12/1861. However, the Battle of First Manassas (Bull Run) was the first major encounter between the Union and Confederate troops. President Lincoln was concerned that the 32,000 Confederate troops at Manassas presented a threat to the nation's capital city. He ordered an assault by 29,000 Union troops. It was believed victory would be swift and the troops would then easily take Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy. Many civilians packed

Railroads have played a significant role in both the history and development of Manassas and Prince William County. Although Confederate forces won both battles, the Union forces controlled the junction for most of the Civil War. Amtrak passenger trains. Living as close as we do in Prince William County we are able to visit more frequently than tourists. However, most of us spend the majority of our leisure time seeking out recreational opportunities close to home. As a developing county our recreational venues are growing along with the residential and commercial community. The good news is that the growth also applies to facilities that we can enjoy when the winter weather makes outdoor recreation uncomfortable. We traveled the county this winter with camcorder in hand

The Brentsville Union Church was completed in 1874 and is still available for worship services by local religious groups. The church is part of the 28 acre Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre. The church, 1822 courthouse, 1822 jail and 1922 one room schoolhouse are now owned and maintained by Prince William County.Architectural lines in rural America during the 18th and 19th century were clean, symmetrical and functional. Their simplicity was the source of their beauty. There are probably thousands of them standing and serving throughout the country today. Even the decorative features of the windows and doors were understated. Before Arthur

prince william county things to do: They Built Them To Last
- 09/29/11 09:59 AM
The fourth courthouse to serve Prince William County was built in Brentsville in 1822. Over the years there have been two replacements. The interior has been faithfully restored and is open to the public. After it was closed it served as a girl's school and as county offices among other uses. The small brick building to the right is the jail that was built in 1822 as well. It is in disrepair and is presently being renovated. Unbelievable as it may seem, there are documents available that will enable faithful restoration. One of the exciting aspects of living in Prince William

It was built about 1747 by Richard Black-burn of Ripon, an old cathedral town in England. Colonel Thomas Blackburn, his son, was a contemporary and fought with George Washington. In that period the families of Mount Vernon and Rippon were on very intimate terms. George Washington even made reference in his diary to overnight stays at Rippon Lodge with Mrs. Washington Its' ownership changed over the years, but was last owned by Admiral Richard Blackburn Black, another descendant
