There are not many things more elegantly inviting and soothing than a gas lit carriage house or post lamp. Nowadays, we primarily use attractive flickering incandescent candles. However, I suspect the people who designed the first lamps would be appalled to see ecofriendly light bulbs installed in this light fixture. It doesn't "work" for me.

Arthur and I have lived in Northern Virginia for 37 uninterrupted years. During that time we have taken full advantage of the opportunity to visit scores of historical sites that are not on the "tourist tours." Huntley is not open to the public and is heavily secured to protect it from vandalism. Since we photographed it there is no question it is in plain view for all to see. It sits at the highest elevation in Fairfax County and has a southern "to die for" view.
Part of the original 1,000 acre estate is now Huntley Meadows Park, a major wetlands … (31 comments)

Famed yodeler Tex Morton recorded that country/western tune in the 1930's.
Fast forward to the Blizzard of 2010. The photo below reminds me of the message in that old tune. Yes, my husband was taking pictures while I shoveled snow during the "event". Incidentally, the grill you see in the picture was the only visible part of my car. An hour later that was covered as well.

The two photos of the Lake Ridge and Northern Virginia Blizzard of 2010 were taken exactly 24 hours apart. The first was taken at the start of the blizzard at 7;OO PM 2/5/2010 The second was taken at the end of the blizzard at 7:00 PM 2/6/2010 The total snowfall on our deck was 28" in 24 hours

Those words spoken by that great American linguist, Yogi Berra, were in reference to the fact that Yankee sluggers Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were hitting back-to-back home runs. They seem eerily appropriate in Northern Virginia since we just had our second snowstorm in a little over four weeks and have now shoveled out three times the "normal" amount of annual snowfall. Enough already.

speechless sundays: Brentsville County Jail - Built 1822 And Still Standing - 01/23/10 11:07 PM

In 1820 Brentsville was the center of Prince William County Virginia. The county built a courthouse and jail there in 1822The courthouse and jail served 71 years until a new courthouse and jail was built in Manassas in 1893.At times after it was closed it served as a dormitory for a girl's private school, a private residence and as an office. The building is currently closed awaiting restoration and is the only remaining building in the Brentsville Historic Centre not yet renovated.
