virginia: Lake Ridge Schools Woodbridge Prince William County Virginia - 10/01/07 01:45 AM
The fact that all of the children in Lake Ridge attend school in Lake Ridge is one of the primary reasons Lake Ridge is such a desireable location.  It doesn't make any difference whether or not you have children of your own.  At the time you decide to sell your home the availability of good and convenient local schools is a very positive marketing tool.   In all the years my husband and I have been a real estate team, families with children are concerned about schools and location is one of many considerations.
We moved to Lake Ridge 27 years ago … (0 comments)

The National Museum of the Marine Corps opened to the public on November 13, 2006. It pays tribute to the US Marines who have served our country since 1776 and will be an inspiration to those who will serve serve in the future. It is built on a 135-acre site on US 1 just south of the entrance to the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. The Museum's design reflects the image of the flag-raisers on Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima.  It  was designed to invite visitors to its stunning 118,000-square-foot building.  State-of-the-art technology will give visitors a genuine sense of "being in the … (10 comments)

virginia: Napa Valley, Virginia - 09/30/07 09:57 PM

Wine has been made in Virginia for four centuries.  The first vintage in 1608 from native grapes was a dismal failure.  Instead of working to perfect wine production from native grapes, Virginians spent the next 250 years in a losing attempt to cultivate French grapes.
After many years of failure, Virginians had become comfortable with beer and whiskey and had just about given up hope of producing a domestic wine.  One Virginian, Thomas Jefferson, did persist.  He successfully grew native grapes and produced wine at Monticello.  Eventually there were other growers who had success with a native grape, the Norton, and wine production … (3 comments)

virginia: Great Blue Heron Love Our Fishin' Hole - 09/30/07 09:55 PM

Of course they do - it's the 2,100 acre Occoquan Reservoir which separates Prince William County and Fairfax County.  The reservoir is managed by the Fairfax County Water Authority as the water supply for the residents of Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria.
The reservoir is located near the I-95 corridor and is easily accessible to fishermen since there are three marinas with boat rental, bait, tackle and boat launching ramps.  As it is a public water supply and there are no beaches swimming is not allowed.  However, people do rent or launch their own canoes.  Many people launch their individual … (0 comments)

virginia: Burke Fairfax County Virginia 22015 - 09/30/07 09:47 PM

While Burke is not an incorporated town or city in Fairfax County, it is a very special area of the county with its' own unique identity and history .
Like much of Northern Virginia the area now known as Burke can be traced back to land originally owned by Lord Fairfax.  In the early 18th century he made land grants to families including Henry Ward.  Ward built Burke's first house, portions of which were incorporated into the Woods community center in Burke Centre.  Hannah Ward married Silas Burke, a wealthy landowner in the Burke area.  In addition to increasing the family's holdings to more … (0 comments)

virginia: Google Loves Active Rain Posts - 09/30/07 09:43 PM
Last week I did a post about the Prince William County, Virginia Fire Chief retiring.  This lady has won national and international acclaim for her leadership development skills.  There was a major celebration in her honor at The National Museum of the Marine Corps which my husband and I attended.  I don't know who Googled what, but my post appeared and she has been getting lots of phone calls thanking her for her service and commenting on the post.  It's a pleasure to know my post had some part in recognizing the public service accomplishments of a friend. virginia: Candy Canes or Candy Corn? - 09/30/07 09:41 PM

My husband called me from Sam's Club the other day and asked if I wanted him to buy any candy canes at the same time he was buying Halloween candy.  Since it was 7:30 in the morning I wasn't sure he was fully awake and not dreamiing.  He assured me he was of sound mind and there were Christmas decorations and candy next to the Halloween merchandise.
I'm old enough to remember the first time you saw Christmas merchandise was the day after Thanksgiving.  Of course, everything nowadays is hurry up and sell it before your competitor knows you have it on … (15 comments)
