economy: Honolulu Unemployment Rate 8th Lowest in the Nation - 04/11/11 08:31 PM
Prior to the current recession, Honolulu at one point had the lowest unemployment rates in the nation.
Back then, we were hovering in the 2% rate of workers being unemployed. Although 5.2% is much higher, we are also significantly lower than the national average.
According to the latest numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Honolulu's unemployment rate is now the 8th lowest in the nation. Lincoln, Nebraska had the lowest rate at 4.2% followed by Bismarck, North Dakota and Ames, Iowa. That's great for those cities, however, I'm not quite sure if I'd want to live there...

economy: Does Housing Help the Economy or Does the Economy Help Housing? - 04/12/10 11:16 AM
If "the economy helps housing," Honolulu's housing market may be in for a rebound.
According to an article in today's paper, Honolulu is ranked 6th in the nation for metro areas. The report was composed by the Brookings Institution. Coupled with low inventory, it will be interesting to see what happens. Will this drive our housing market or not? When the government money for first-time homebuyer credits is shut off at the end of this month, will housing slow and take the economy with it? Only time will tell...
