If you consider Honolulu a "big city" and want to get away from it all and live on a smaller (man made) island, Koko Isle in Hawaii Kai may be the spot. You can access Koko Isle by a small bridge and the "island" sits on the marina in Hawaii Kai. I have to say what is really cool about Koko Isle is it literrally is like an island. Unlike other man-made peninsulas in Hawaii Kai's marina like the Peninsula at Hawaii Kai or Kuapa Isle, the bridge to and from Koko Isle is the only point of access.
