economy: It's Now a Renter's Market* *(in some areas) - 04/11/09 12:47 PM
Across the U.S., desperate landlords are coming up with novel ways to attract new tenants and retain old ones.

Amy Gips loves her one-bedroom apartment in a swank Manhattan building that features a gym, golf simulator, yoga studio, and massage rooms. But she no longer feels she can justify paying $4,400 a month in rent, especially now that her ex-boyfriend has moved out.
A week ago, just as the 27-year-old associate at a private equity fund was planning her next move, a letter arrived from the property management company. The rent for the 750-square-foot Chelsea apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Madison … (5 comments)

Memo - To all Employees

As the CFO of this business that employs 140 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama is our new President and that our taxes and Gov't fees will increase in a BIG way.
To compensate for these increases, I figure that our clients will have to see an increase in our fees to them of approx. 8%, but since we cannot increase our fees currently due to the dismal state of the economy, we have no choice but to lay off eight of our employees instead.
This has really been … (10 comments)

economy: Housing Supply Side Needs a Reality Check - 11/22/08 03:12 AM

The bailout line keeps getting longer.

Now you see Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers, but I aimed to take a moment in time still pic and capture an emotion that might translate to you as you read this.  The picture might say, "Come on and help me out a little!"  or maybe it says, "Back off, you messed up, now you deal with it", but ultimately it is for you to decide.
First came the banks, then insurers led by American International Group and even card companies such as American Express. Now car makers hope for … (2 comments)

economy: The Sky is Falling!...? - 11/18/08 01:12 AM
I have read so many eclectic blogs on here from SEO to residential staging to mortgage rates to fall season photogs to how to market successfully....
But what is starting to grind my gears is the fact that very few of the "Featured" blogs deal with our economic crisis.  I realize the activerain community is by realtors for realtors dealing with real estate issues, but if you don't think citigroup laying off 73,000 employees or Ford and GM possibly going bankrupt or firing 100's of 1,000's of employees then your sadly mistaken or maybe business is just too good for you … (8 comments)

economy: Dispersing the blow from the economy - 10/24/08 12:36 PM
As the waves of retribution resonate through our industry and other similar industries, the ramifications are loud and easily felt...
I have seen a handful of Commercial Real Estate Agents go elsewhere to other industries to seek salaried positions.
On the other hand, I have also witnessed numerous financial carnage, as layoffs, shutdowns, bankruptcies and fraud have shaken those employers to the ground...  Mortgage brokers, lenders, appraisers, construction, home builders, pest control, landscaping, etc...
I hope the comments have some silver linings my follow up will hopefully have a positive tinge as well.
