Tyler Eklund was excelling as a young snowboarder, preparing to compete in a national championship during his first season of competitive boarding.
But the 14-year-old Bend boy's burgeoning career was cut tragically short Sunday, when he fell during a practice run for the USA Snowboard Association National Championships, being staged this week at Northstar at Tahoe resort in Truckee, California.
Eklund, born and raised in Bend, suffered a broken vertebra in his neck and as of late Tuesday was paralyzed from the neck down, according to Hans Hibbard, Eklund's coach and snowboarding director for the Mt. Bachelor Sports … (7 comments)

Oregon is a great place to live for many reasons. Fortunately, many in the state have adequate health care for their families. For those who don't, there are many resources.
Per the April 1st, 2007 Edition of the Bend Bulletin, here are some of the available options for uninsured families and their children:
Oregon Health Plan-This state insurance program offers OHP Plus and the OHP standard plans. It is paid for through state and federal dollars. Children can qualify based on citizenship and their family income and assets. For more information, call 1-800-527-5772 or on the web at www.oregon.gov/DHS/healthplan.

As published on the Oikos Green Building Source site, Central Oregon has received the prestigious National Green Building Award for single-family custom home building. This is the second year in a row that Central Oregon has won this award.  
 
Environmentally friendly  building has taken off here in Central Oregon with an estimated 340 homes in the Earth Advantage program in 2006, 220  in 2005 and an estimated 500 for 2007. The Earth Advantage Program certifies houses as environmentally healthy if the builders meet certain standards and agree to regular independent inspections. central oregon: Central Oregon and the new Deer Ridge Correctional Institution - 03/27/07 06:27 AM
Madras, Oregon is getting a huge boost to their local economy. The addition of Deer Ridge Correctional Institution is expected to produce between 400-500 new jobs for this Central Oregon area with an estimated annual payroll of $22 million dollars. The new Jefferson County facility is situated on 200 acres three miles east of Madras  and will house both minimum and medium security inmates. The new men's prison will contain 644 minimum security beds and 1240 medium security beds.
