old town: 421 William Street, Key West - Prime Property

I played "buyer" today and checked out the listing at 421 William Street in the Old Town area of Key West. Before we go inside, let's look at the way the house appeared in 1965 and compare basically the same view as it looks today.
A couple things are obvious: wrap around balconies were added on the first and second floor levels; a staircase was added to access the third floor space for one's brother-in-law; the concrete fence was removed and replaced by white picket fence and a gated off street parking space. Locals and frequent visitors to Key West know that our old houses are protected and may not be torn down to build new houses. 1122 Whitehead Street, Key West has an interesting history in usage. The building was built in 1880 when it was the Jos. Reves Cigar Factory and numbered 129 Whitehead Street on the 1889 Historic Sanborn Fire Map. The street number 1122 Whitehead Street appeared on the 1912 Map. I wish I were a better photographer so that I could share with you the views I see when I wake-up way too early most mornings.
Unlike the house above, my house sits behind a privacy fence obscured by a lot of palm trees and tropical foliage. I have Plantation shutters in the bedroom which I sometimes shut to block out the street light or maybe the moon. My office adjoins the bedroom. It also has shutters. In 1886 an entire village for cigar makers was developed in one corner of Old Town Key West. The Pohalski and Co. cigar factory was located at the corner of White and Truman. Cottages lined the nearby streets and lanes as was typical of the other parts of town where other cigar factories were located.
